Notes on replacing the CECM

[b]edit:[b] this thread was previously titled "remote control adaptation vagcom", but it was a dumb question I found an answer too, so I
thought I'd change it into something more useful.
I had to replace my CECM today. The symptom I suffered which pointed
me to the CECM being bad was a stuck driver side turn signal. It was on,
all the time, even when the car was off. This registered as a short in my
fault codes as "01493 - Bulb for Blinkers; Front Left (M5) - 007 - Short
to Ground - Intermittent"
Some searching led me to this thread:

Which indicated the CECM was the fault. I ordered a new high line CECM,
part # 5K0-937-087-G to replace my stock mid-line part #1K0-937-086
There's a DIY for the CECM swap on a MK5 at Vortex, here:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...line-CECM-Swap (thanks
2013R for digging that up!)
Fortunately, the DIY on our cars is *much* simpler and quicker. For
starters, there's no reason at all to remove the dash trim. The dash
panel above the pedals isn't there in the MK6, apparently, so you can
access the CECM already. Also, instead of 11 harnesses to remove, there
are just 3, and they have quick-release levers to pull them out. There is
also a hanger clipped to the CECM with a 4th harness in it - you do not
need to remove that harness from the hanger, and the hanger just
unclips using a small screw driver to press in the release tabs while
pulling it towards the back of the car (parallel to the floor, not towards
it). Then, the CECM just drops right out of its clips, and the new one
slips right back in.
There were a couple points I had to research after the swap, though, so
here's a couple notes to get you going:
[1] The new CECM is in "Factory Mode"
In factory mode, the doors won't lock + unlock properly, and you can't
program new remotes. To turn off factory mode with VCDS, go to 09
Central Electronics, Adaptation, Channel 19, and set the value to 0.
[2] You can just copy/paste your old long-coding over the new
long-coding. It's still a good idea to have captured the screens from each
byte in the long coding helper, so you can compare manually later - but I
did not encounter any differences.
[3] Your key fobs are known to your old CECM, but not your new one
After turning off factory mode, you can relearn your key fobs for keyless
entry. The procedure is documented here:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...ule#Adaptation
It was a very simple job, and apparently the CECM failure has hit a

number of us. Hopefully these tips will prove useful to someone down
the line!
