2.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
According to the received information, the project is to be used for water supply
purposes. The project consists of ductile iron pipelines with approximate length of
34Km from Khaw PS to Zaatry PS Jordan and concrete blending reservoir at
Zaatry PS. The approximate area of the reservoir is 900 m2.

3.

GENERAL SITE DESCRIPTION

The investigated site lies between Khaw PS and Zaatry PS.
The site crosses urban areas, embankment of existing asphalted roads and existing
side walk. All public service such as, manholes electrical poles, road signals exist at
the general site area.
The surface of the site has elevations ranging between +550 to +705 above sea level.

4.

GENERAL GEOLOGY
The general geology is based on the geological map issued by Natural Resources
Authority geological directorate AL-Zarqa Map No. (3254 III) and AL-Mafraq
(3254IV) scale 1:50 000.
The general geological setting in Jordan is considered a part of the Nubo-Arabian
shield consisting of Precambrian platonic and metamorphic basement rock over lain
by thick sequences of sedimentary rocks up to carbonate rocks, which belong to the
Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary.
These varieties in the type of the materials causing large varieties in mechanical
characteristics ranging from soft and very weak compressible marl to hard and
strong limestone. This variations some times causing troubles for civil engineering
due to the existence of fracturing, discontinuities, karst, caves, cavities in addition to
high degree of weathering and the type of infilling materials.
However, the complexity of sedimentary rocks means that an engineering structure
may be founded on two or more kinds of materials, each with significantly differed
strength and compressibility characteristics. Therefore any classification of rocks
must be related to the two engineering properties. The properties of the intact rock
specimen and the characteristics of the entire rock body
The geology of the site can be summarized as follows:
4.1 Fill Materials Formation
The investigated corridor is covered with fill materials composed of about 30cm
asphalted layer followed by gravel of limestone and marl with silty clay (
Embankment of the Road itself ).

Khaw PS - Zaatry PS Water Transmission Pipeline Geotechnical Site Investigations Report

4.2 Recent Sediments Formation

The investigated corridor is covered with alluvium soil, Pleistocene sediment and
wadi sediment. The formation of this soil, most probably, is quaternary. It is
derived from carbonate rocks by processes of in-situ weathering and erosion and
consists of silty clay and gravel of limestone, chert and basalt.
The experiences on this clay revealed a lateral uniformity of character and variations
in moisture content and density between depths of 2 to 3 m. The deeper clay remains
throughout the year at moisture content near to plastic limit and of firm to stiff
consistency. It has a fissured structure which causes collapse of the faces of the
excavation

4.3 Basalt (Qb, Qb3, Qb2, Qb1)

This unit occurs in a huge area (about 11000 Km2). This lava flow of Jabla Eddrous
and Hauran (Syria) join east and south-east of El-Azzraq Depression.
Six phases of this basalt lava could be differentiated. They area altogether up to 150
m thick. They overlie middle and upper Eocene limestone and are separated from
each other by approximately 5m thick fossil soils, red clay and weathered surface.
The basalt flows of the lower three phases only know from ground water drilling in
the Wadi Dhuleil area, they are not exposed in any place near the project area.
The basalt of the different eruption phases are could only be differentiated according
to their stratigraphical position, type of occurrence and grade of weathering but not
by their mineralogical or chemical composition. However, the composition of its
whole rock mass can be very variable because of beds of tuff and agglomerate within
it.
It observed that this massive basalt flow has a sheet structure and overlain by a
mixture of unconsolidated pyroclastic sediments which consist of rounded bombes
(large pyroclast) and lapili (10-50 mm pryoclast) with silty clay, sand and ash filling
products.

4.4 Amman Silicified Limestone Formation ( ASL) (B2)

This formation outcrops at different locations of the pipeline corridor. The period of
this formation is Upper Cretaceous - Campanian (Belqa Group).
This formation consists of grey and brown thin to medium bedded chert, silicified
limestone, interbedded with limestone , dolomatic limestone , marl and phosphate.
The formation was deposited in a shallow marine environment.

4.5 Wadi Umm Ghudran Formation (WG) (B1)

This formation outcrops at different locations of the pipeline corridor. The period of
this formation is Upper Cretaceous - Santonian , Coniacian (Belqa Group).

Khaw PS - Zaatry PS Water Transmission Pipeline Geotechnical Site Investigations Report

This formation consists of massive white chalk. The formation was deposited in a
moderately deep- water pelagic environment.

4.6 Wadi Al Sir Limestone Formation (WSL) (A7)

This formation outcrops at different locations of the pipeline corridor. The period of
this formation is Middle Cretaceous - Turoinan (Ajlun Group).
This formation consists of massive to medium bedded of limestone, dolomatic
limestone and nodular of chert. The formation was deposited in a shallow open
marine environment.

FIELD INVESTIGATION
Site visits were made on September, 5-10th, 2015 to carry out geological survey for
the general site area, locating the boreholes test bits and electrical resistivity within
the proposed pipe line route and reservoir site, to obtain as much information as
possible about land use and drainage and to determine the expected methods of
sampling and field testing.

5.1 Drilling of Boreholes

Subsurface conditions at the proposed project sites were revealed by 28
boreholes drilled with truck mounted rotary drilling rig, using compressed air
flush.

Khaw PS - Zaatry PS Water Transmission Pipeline Geotechnical Site Investigations Report

The boreholes numbered 1-28 were drilled to depths ranging between 5.0 and
10.0 m below the existing ground surface. The locations of the boreholes are
shown on (Appendix A, Figure 1-3).
The depth of each borehole is presented on the logs of boring, (Appendix B).
Borehole number, Coordinates and depth of each borehole are summarized in

The detailed geological descriptions for each test pit are presented on the logs of
tests pits (Appendix B).
5.3 Sampling
5.3.1 Sampling from Boreholes
It is our knowledge that sampling of disturbed soil samples depends on the geology
and the nature of the subsurface materials encountered during drilling.
Undisturbed samples were obtained using double tube core barrel. Disturbed
samples were obtained at intervals of low engineering interest using down the
whole hammer. The samples were examined and classified in the field by our
geotechnical engineer. After visual inspection, all samples were marked, placed in
waterproof plastic bags, placed in sequence in wooden boxes, and taken to our
laboratories for testing.
5.3.2 Sampling from Tests Pits
Representative bulk samples of 45 kg in weight were collected from each layer
encountered in the tests pits. The samples were logged, marked and transported to
our laboratories for testing.
5.4 Field Testing
5.4.1 Electrical Resistivity Test
Six electrical resistivity tests were carried out at specific locations .The detailed
results of the electrical resistivity measurements are presented in (Appendix C).

ENGINEERING ANALYSIS
7.1 Site Geology
The visual lithological description of the materials encountered in the boreholes
drilled and tests pits excavated disclosed general similarities. For more details
reference should be made to the individual logs of tests pits documented and
presented in (Appendix B).
The encountered subsurface materials consist of the following materials starting
from the existing ground surface:
1. Fill materials composed of asphalted layer followed by gravel of Limestone
and Chert with Silty Clay (Road Embankment).
2. Brown, moist, stiff to very stiff Silty Clay with gravel of
Chert.

Limestone and

3. Yellow, dry, very weak Marl, with patches of Clayey Marl and fragment of
limestone.
4. Interbedded thinly to thick layers of moderately strong Limestone, strong
Chert and very weak Marl.
5. Dark grey moderately strong, Basalt with pockets of Silty Clay and voids
7.2 Materials properties
Physical properties of the materials encountered were obtained from the
laboratory investigation program.
7.2.1

Materials Physical Properties

The MOISTURE CONTENT shows the relative variation of capacity of

different materials to store water. These values of moisture contents are unique
to the time of sampling and significant differences are to be expected at other
times.
The PLASTICITY of the encountered materials was determined by direct
plotting of liquid limits against plasticity indexes on Casagrande Plasticity
Chart.
The BULK DENSITY was determined by direct measurements of size and
weight of the obtained undisturbed samples. These values are summarized in
(Table 5).
The results of the PARTICLE SIZE distribution tests of the silty clay materials
show the relative proportions of the sand, silt and clay fractions in the soil mass.
The percentages of these fractions had been plotted on the Textural
Classification Chart for determination the TEXTURAL CLASSIFICATION of

the soil. The results of the particle size distribution tests of the sand show the
proportions of different fractions in the soil mass
The POTENTIAL FOR EXPANSIVENESS of the clay soil was found by
plotting the plasticity indexes against the corresponding clay fractions on the
WILLIAMS and DONALDSONS, Modified Chart for Expansiveness
Physical properties obtained from the laboratory tests results for materials
encountered in boreholes are summarized in (Table 8).

7.2.2 Materials Mechanical Properties

CONSISTENCY of silty clay materials was determined using values of the
unconfined compressive strength tests results and referring to the Jordanian
code of practice, Volume III, (Table 5).
The MODULUS OF DEFORMATION (Em) of silty clay materials was
determined using the results of the consolidation tests and the following
equation: Em = (1+e0) / a
a = (e2 e1) / (P2 P1)
Where
e0 = Initial porosity
a = Koficient of compressibility
= [(1 2) (1+ )]/ (1 - )
= Poissons ratio (0.35)
ei = Porosity
Pi = Normal pressure, kg/cm2
The obtained values ranging between 160-180 kg/cm2 for the silty clay.
STRENGTH of the Limestone and Basalt materials was determined using
values of the unconfined compression tests results and referring to the Jordanian
Code of Practice III, (Table 6).
This test method covers the guideline, requirements, and procedures for
determining the point load strength index of rock. Specimens in the form of
rock cores, blocks, or irregular lump can be tested by this test method. This
index is intended to be used to classify and characterize rock.
The mechanical properties of the foundation materials are summarized in (Table
9).

Ground Water

No free or confined ground water was encountered at the time of investigations in any
of the excavated tests pits.
7.4

Geological Features and Cavities

No caves or cavities were encountered in any of the excavated tests pits. Generally,
the area is mostly stable. Minor faults are located at the general area of the site as
shown on the attached general geological maps (Appendix A).
However, the geological formation encountered at the site and our field observation
show that cavities and caves may be encountered at general sites areas.

8.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

8.1 Introduction
The following conclusions and recommendations are based on the results of the
engineering analysis of the field and laboratory investigations and the nature of the
proposed structures. If the nature of the proposed structure will be adjusted or
deviated, these recommendations consequently may need adjustment. Therefore, we

Khaw PS - Zaatry PS Water Transmission Pipeline Geotechnical Site Investigations Report

24

should be informed at once so that we can reconsider our recommendations where

necessary.
8.2

Type of Foundation Ground and Measures

1. The proposed Zaatry PS blending reservoir and pipeline and other related
facilities shall be laid on natural materials, which were encountered at the level of
the pipe installation depth. Foundation ground when reached shall be cleaned from
loose materials before laying the pipelines.etc.
2. Fill materials shall be removed and considered not suitable as foundation ground
and shall be replaced by compacted base coarse materials or other approved
materials of gravelly soil.
3. The foundations of proposed Zaatry PS blending reservoir should be placed at a
minimum depth of 2.00 m below the finished level of the ground surrounding the
building and should be penetrated to a minimum depth of 1.0 m within the above
recommended foundation ground.
4. Where the vertical side slopes of the pipelines trenches will not be stable due to
excavation, it is recommended that shoring or sloping will be necessary. Bracing
and protection measures shall be designed and installed for worker safety
according to the related engineering guidelines.
Special care shall be taken if cavities may be encountered during excavation
of trench.
5. Thrust block:
a. The parameters required for the design of the thrust blocks are determined
from the laboratory tests results of the pipelines sites and the mechanical and
physical properties of the encountered materials.
8.3

Allowable Bearing Pressure

For Zaatry blending reservoir

The allowable bearing capacity for the silty clay materials is determined using
Terzaghi equation considering a factor of safety of 3.
The ultimate bearing capacity was found by Terzaghi Buisman and given as:
q (ult ) = { [ C * NC ] + [ o * D * Nq ] + [ 0.5 * 1 * B * N ]}/ F.S

= Factor of Safety (F.S = 3).

Nc, Nq and N = Terzghi factors depending on the angle of internal friction, which
equal zero when the soil is in fully saturation conditions.
Nc = 5.7, Nq= 1.0 and N= 0.0
It is recommended that the above-mentioned type of foundations at Zaatry proposed
blending reservoir be designed for a net allowable bearing capacity of 1.8 Kg/cm2 for
silty clay materials.
The allowable bearing capacity for the limestone and basalt rocks materials can be
determined using Goodman equation considering the factor of safety of 20. The used
equation is :

qa = qu / F
qa
qu
F

= Allowable bearing capacity, kg/cm2

= Unconfined compressive strength, kg/cm2
= Factor of safety

The calculated values of the allowable bearing capacity for the limestone materials are
ranges from 4.1 to 4.65 kg/cm2. The calculated values of the allowable bearing
capacity for the basalt materials are ranges from 13.0 to 13.10 kg/cm2.
It is recommended that the above-mentioned type of foundations be designed for a
net allowable bearing capacity of 3.0 Kg/cm2 for limestone materials and 13.0
Kg/cm2 for basalt materials
The allowable bearing capacities summarized in (Table 11) for each materials type.

9.

DRAINAGE

It is recommended that proper and sufficient drainage system shall be designed to

protect the building, service lines and foundations from reach of water.

10.

FOUNDATION INSPECTION

It must be noted that the limited drilled boreholes show the subsurface materials at the
locations and depths drilled only, and not reflect the subsurface conditions at whole
site area.
It is essential that the foundation ground reached should be inspected by our office
immediately after excavation is completed in order to ensure that suitable materials
have been reached, and to detect signs of potential problems and that foundations are
placed on fairly uniform materials.

Electrical resistivity

Resistivity Result For Khaw AL-Zaatry Pipeline

Technical Report
PURPOSE
This report is intended as a guide to the application of earth resistivity techniques to
shallow, subsurface investigation of engineering sites. The primary purpose of the
report is to provide the client subsurface physical properties (resistivity and
conductivity) of outcrops (soil and rocks). One-dimensional (1D) electrical resistivity
measurements were conducted with the Iris Syscal R1 plus resistivity instrument to
get the ground resistivity in advance of water-pipeline construction in the Khaw
Alzaatry area. The cost of pipeline construction is strongly dependent on the ground
conditions encountered. Accurate prediction of these conditions can reduce the
planning risk considerably. The determination of ground conditions reduced the time
and cost associated with gaining land access and permission for trenching. It is also
served to detect areas of high ground conductivity due to clays or saline soils, which
can create conditions in which pipeline corrosion is accelerated. Resistivity
measurements were carried out utilizing a Schlumberger array.
1. Location
The study area is part of AL-zarqa, Khaw and AL-mafraq geological sheets

2-1. Methodology, Measurements and data acquisition.
Geoelectrical resistivity methods have proved to be very useful in geological
applications like mining exploration, geotechnical investigations, hydrology and
others. The electrical resistivity of any material is defined as the resistance (in ohms)
between the opposite faces of a unit cube of that material. The resistivity is expressed
by in ohm meters (.m). In sounding the measured resistance values at the surface
reflect the vertical distribution of resistivity values in a geological section. As
sounding gives the vertical distribution of resistivity values with respect to various
layers in the subsurface at the sounding point and called as vertical electrical sounding
(VES).
The application of resistivity sounding method, an important tool in
interpretation of the data, has been the comparison of the apparent resistivity curves
derived from the field observations with apparent resistivity curves computed for
assumed models of the subsurface stratification. In curve matching technique, the
field sounding curve is compared with theoretical sounding curves computed for
various layer parameters. When the field curve matches with a particular theoretical
curve, the layer parameters of the theoretical curves have been taken as the solution
for the field sounding data. A ten of vertical electrical soundings (VES) with
Schlumberger array were conducted utilizing Syscal R1 plus (Image.1) at different
locations within the study area (table.1), the maximum electrode spacing used
AB/2=25m to get more than 5m depth.

The resistivity measurements are normally made by injecting current into the ground
through two current electrodes; C1 and C2 in figure.2, and measuring the resulting
voltage difference at two potential electrodes (P1 and P2). From the current (I) and
voltage (V) values, an apparent resistivity (pa) value is calculated.

a = k V / I
Where;
k is the geometric factor which depends on the arrangement of the four
electrodes.

Figure.2. A conventional four electrode array to measure the subsurface resistivity.

The measured apparent resistivity values are normally plotted on a log-log

graph paper. To interpret the data from such a survey, it is normally assumed that the
subsurface consists of horizontal layers. In this case, the subsurface resistivity
changes only with depth.
