General Class Philosophy

Professor will lead you to the concepts in class and will help
you to understand it.
Try asking question in class so that everybody gains. You work
hard, you get more!

There is a three axis of learning in my courses.

Brings notes, gives attention in class and scribbles notes in the
class.
Review of notes/book at home
Gets immersed in the project

Teaching Assistant will help you on details.

There are two teaching assistants this time.. To help you more..
TA will also conduct Project Management software related lab
and will support you in your learning process
Week for starting labs will be decided by the TA.

Evaluation

Quizzes are generally multiple choice questions. The answer would

be the one that is more relevant to the question.
Fundamentals would be necessary.
Normal duration is about 20 minutes.

Mid Terms are short write ups, usually in the question paper itself.

Final exam could be closed book

Mid terms are generally for 45 minutes and we need to finish it on time.
Final exam is expected in the First week of semester exam
It would be for 1.5 -2 hours.

Marks are given based on what you wrote and not based on what
you meant or what you meant you wrote.
Master Answer Sheet for all exams would be made available for you to
compare your answers.
Please visit TA but one person at a time to look at the marksmarks are
personal.

TA will conduct the exams

Multidisciplinary case study

You will join hands with AUP in conducting a
multidisciplinary work on road safety on
campus. Will give some lectures free for you
to do this project.
At present it is planned for Nov 20-23/24 (10th
week)
Submission of case study reporttentatively
12th week (Sunday)

This case study will have 5% of your grade.

Do well.

Course (class) Project

Course project should be developed and presented in class to

qualify for the marks. A group of maximum four students for one
project.
Project groups and Class Project Manager would be selected in class.
Class Project Manager is a very close link between you and
Professors/TA.

Notes of plagiarism
Project report is your own. Therefore, you should not put any copied
material. If found copied, a 0 mark will be assigned to the whole group
in the project.

Project Presentation
If one person is absent in presentation, the whole class will get a ZERO
mark. Presentation would be done in a group.
Project work needs to be discussed in groups and they have to be
properly kept in a log book.

9/18/2016

In Course Project
Your Individual Role is Multidisciplinary
type
You would have to assume a role of for
example, designer, cost estimator, risk
manager, project scheduler
You have to keep record of what you
have done.
You will be given a rubric to show what is
expected in a multidisciplinary work.

In course project
The ISE program needs to evaluate you
on
An understanding of professional and ethical
responsibilities and you need to demonstrate
it through writing.
Understands ethical self-awareness
Identifies ethical and legal issues if any
Understands the position of stakeholders and any
conflict of interest
Resolves such issues professionally.

9/18/2016

What is the project this time?

Guess!

Field Trips
There would be field trips in this class and all must
be present in that trip
First trip is arranged in the course for projects inside
university
October 2 and October 4. You will visit two projects,
one almost finished, one is under construction.
Attendance is Compulsory

Second field visit is being coordinated by the

Department and will be informed to you.
That visit is outside the campus.
If you do not go to the trip, you will have to sit in a
lecture. Attendance will be taken.

9/18/2016

Make up classes
Professor might have to go out on
scientific missions (at this time possible
timings are October and November) as
approved by the university. In such cases,
if necessary, make up classes will be
arranged:
it could be the replacement class or self
reading.

Any Questions?

9/18/2016

Let us go to the Core of

subject
Who decides on project?
Who pays the money?
Who gets benefit or suffer
from project?

College of North Atlantic and QU

Qatar University

Is providing money to do the project enough?

10

9/18/2016

Who are the stakeholders here?

What are they seem to be doing?

Why do we have to study project

engineering?
There must be a problem (or opportunity) to start a
project we need to think first.
Projects are one time activity to generate an end
product, which can be a product, service, or a report
(document).
What examples of products can you give?
Can the construction of highways in Qatar be considered as
products?
What about the construction of Centre Point shopping mall?
What about the development of Apple ipad? Or a Sony
Reader?
What about bidding for World Cup for 2022 by Qatar?

What are the common features that you can extract in

these examples?

11

9/18/2016

So project starts with..

Thinking of what can be done?
What is needed (in the short term and long term) and
possible (in terms of technology, skills, money..)?
Can we do it (or start with what we have)?
Can we do it properly (as per the objective of the
project)?
With constrained cost?
Within the given time frame?
For FIFA World Cup 2022, everything must be ready before
the game starts
How successfully can we execute it?
How successfully can we close it?
By the waywhat is the risk ?
Known risks and unknown risks!

So project is
A specific final task that needs to be achieved..
In 2010, Qatar exported 77 million MT of liquefied natural
gas to the world
Before we could achieve that, we should have a facility to
export, such facilities are equipment to compress gas and
a terminal to load liquefied gas in the tanker. This is a very
specific (unique) requirement
Specificterminal
Specificterminal is for liquefied natural gas
Specific terminal is for liquefied natural gas and it is for export

If we have to construct another LNG export terminal, then

it is another project as location can be different, size can
be different and so on..

What else can be different?

Some projects that succeed

Some projects that fail

12

9/18/2016

Export of Liquefied Natural Gas

(LNG)
Finding the need, planning, constructing of terminals for
export of LNG is unique. Once they are handed over after
completing all performance criteria, terminals are used for
regular transport of LNG to different countries.

What is a Project?

Project is
a complex, temporary effort
limited by time, budget, resources, and performance specifications
and is to develop a unique product that meet the needs of targeted customers

Therefore, Project
Has an established objectivewhat is the outcome?
Has a defined life span with a beginning and an end. And therefore,
there are specific times to deliver different parts of the project.
Has a need for participation from different people from different
departments.
Has a budgeted cost, and performance requirements
Has identified known risks and potential unknowns and plans to manage
those.
Involves many stakeholders
Is something that has not done before.
Look at Chapter 1 (specifically pages 6-8 and onwards).

Observe the situation; understand the impact of
not doing something on the situation. Then..
You would have to generate ideas (could be plenty
of them).
Then you have to make a plan
Then you have to do plan details
You have to have an approval
You have to execute the plan
You have to finish and deliver, well you have to
satisfy your customer/sponsor/owner/users

Projects have different tasks

What should be done first and what should follow up in
this project?
What is the time line?
Are there some works that can be done concurrently?

Project involves many parties

Who are the parties involved in the project
below?
Involvement of parties can bring risks to the project
and they can fail the projects
Known risks and unknown risks

31

9/18/2016

Ok.. Then what is project

engineering?
Understanding of the need to
develop a project,
understanding the tools and
techniques in order to be able to
manage:

Initiate a project
Plan of resources
Develop the project (execute it)
Monitor and control the project
progress by carefully examining risks
Close the project
Developing good project is OK, but
closing a project successfully is also
equally important sometimes it can take
longer to close the project..

Talk about this

project

Project Management can be

done in two ways
By learning the skills as we go on from
one project to another and implementing it
This could be an example of learning
By understanding the project management tools
and techniques and implementing them to the
right finish.
We will work in this format.
