Mixed bag for Sania; Bopanna advances, Paes crashes out

NEW YORK: Serena Williams sped past another
milestone en route to the
US Open fourth round as
men's contenders Andy
Murray and Stan Wawrinka clawed their way into the
last 16.
World number one Williams dominated Sweden's
Johanna Larsson 6-2, 6-1 to
surpass Martina Navratilova for most Grand Slam wins
by a woman with 307.
Not only has she surpassed Navratilova, she
matched Roger Federer's
mark for men.
"To be up there with
both men and women is
something that's superrare, and it actually feels
good," said Williams, who
said she was "really excited" to reach 307. "Obviously I want to keep that
number going higher," add-

ed Williams, who will get

her chance when she takes
on Kazakhstan's Yaroslava
Shvedova for a quarter-final berth.
Many of Murray's troubles against Paolo Lorenzi
were of his own making as
he allowed the energetic
Italian journeyman to make
him look ordinary through
two sets before pulling
himself together to win 7-6
(7/4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, India's Sania
Mirza and Rohan Bopanna
progressed with their respective partners but Leander Paes' campaign ended
after the veteran suffered a
second-round defeat with
Martina Hingis in mixed
doubles at the US Open
here.
Sania and Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic advanced to the third round

of the women's doubles after a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over

Viktorija Golubic and Nicole
Melichar.
The seventh seeded pair
will now meet unseeded

Nicole Gibbs and Nao Hibino next.

Sania Mirza's campaign
in the mixed doubles came
to an end as she and her
Croatian partner Ivan Dodig lost their second round
match against unheralded
Barbora Krejcikova of

Czech Republic and Marin

Draganja of Croatia in
straight sets 3-6 4-6.
The match lasted for
only 65 minutes as the IndoCroat pair were outplayed
in both the sets.
Bopanna and his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski defeated Lukasz
Kubot and Andrea Hlavackova 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 to
move into the quarterfinals.
The pair will next meet
unseeded pair of Robert Farah
and
Anna-Lena
Grnefeld.
However, defending
champions Paes and Hingis lost to American seventh
seeds Coco Vandeweghe
and Rajeev Ram 7-6 (1), 3-6,
13-11 after leading 8-4 in the
match tiebreaker at Flushing Meadows.
The defeat marked the
end of Paes' US Open cam-

paign after he exited the

men's doubles tournament
partnering Andre Begemann on Saturday.
Kyrgios quits US Open
in tears
Fiery Australian Nick
Kyrgios' US Open campaign ended in pain and
tears when he retired from
his third round match
against Ukraine's Illya
Marchenko with a hip injury on Saturday. The 14th
seed needed a medical timeout after dropping the second set and despite a series of further checks with
the trainer, he quit after the
third set feeling unable to
move around the court.
Marchenko's 4-6, 6-4, 61 win gave the world
number 68 a fourth round
clash against two-time
Grand Slam winner and third
seed Wawrinka. (Agencies)

NEW YORK: Novak

Djokovic looks to take another step towards a third
US Open title when he faces
British outsider Kyle
Edmund for a place in the
quarter-finals on Sunday,
dismissing fears of ringrustiness after two free
passes in the first week.
The world number one
needed four tough sets to
beat Jerzy Janowicz in the
first round last Monday.
But he skipped the second round when Jiri Vesely
handed him a walkover with
an arm injury before Mikhail
Youzhny lasted just six

games and 32 minutes before calling it quits with a

hamstring injury in Friday's
third round.
World number 84 Edmund, by contrast, is battlehardened having defeated
top 20 seeds Richard Gasquet and John Isner to make
the last 16 for the first time.
"Considering the stage
of the season, the amount
of matches I've played, what
I've been through with my
body, I think it's actually
good to have some days off
and then shorter matches,"
said Djokovic, chasing a
third major of 2016. (AFP)

Bindra bids adieu to shooting

Indias lone individual Olympic gold medallist says its time to move on
SURAJKUND: Abhinav
Bindra, India's lone individual Olympic gold medallist, on Sunday officially
announced his retirement
from shooting, saying 'it is
time to move on and hand
over the baton to the
younger generation.'
"It is an emotional day
for me," he said.
A near second Olympic
medal was missed by a
whisker at the recentlyconcluded Rio Olympics
2016 and even if he felt
gutted, Bindra was not
ready to show it in front
of his country's media.
"I came fourth in Rio

and now retiring after

playing for two decades. In
Rio, I didn't won a medal
and stood fourth but it
gave me a great closure,"
he said.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics Gold Medallist also expressed gratitude to the
National Rifle Association
of India (NRAI), saying
the organisation supported him and others shooters at every stage of their
career.
"NRAI has supported
the shooters. I want to
thank NRAI. Under President Raninder Singh the

BIRMINGHAM: Delhi Dynamos FC put up a gallant

show before going down 01 against West Brom in what
was the first instance of an
Indian Super league outfit
taking on an EPL side on
their home ground.
Watched by a large contingent of local Asian supporters at the Hawthorns
Stadium, Dynamos underlined their preparedness for
the upcoming Hero ISL back
home with an impressive
outing.
The Lions showed grit
and determination while taking on their much fancied
opponent who fielded majority of their first team
squad including the likes of
Mohamed
Sissoko,
Maruane Chamakh, Craig
Dawson, Jonas Olsson and
Rahis Nabi, youngest of the
Nabi brothers.

marquee player Ruben

MUMBAI: Calling Sunil

Chhetri the team's "talisman", national coach
Stephen Constantine said
the poacher can play for 4-5
years at the top level provided he kept himself fit.
Chhetri played a stellar
role in India's 4-1 rout of
higher-ranked Puerto Rico
in the international football
friendly here last night.
"Sunil Chhetri is the talisman of this team. He is a
wonderful player. He has
been scoring goals for the
last 10 years. I keep teasing
him, saying 'your time is almost done', but he's not having that. He says he has another 4-5 years in him," said
Constantine after India's key
player set up two goals and
scored one in a dazzling display of creative football at
the Andheri Sports Complex
stadium that hosted its first
major game.
"But look, he keeps himself in great shape. He is one
of the leaders of the team,

leaps and bounds," he

said.
"I have always believed
in working hard. There is
no substitute to hard work.
I have given my all shooting and have got even
more. Thank you once
again everyone,"
President of NRAI,
Raninder Singh while felicitating India's ace shooter,
said that it was just a small
gesture from the side.
"The devotion, the focus with which Abhinav
Bindra trains, is an example for everyone," he said.
Having started his Olympic journey in Sydney

Sunil Chhetri
the captain. And as long as
he's fit, he plays," said the
Englishman after India,
ranked 152 on the FIFA table, humbled Puerto Rico,
ranked 114, by coming back
from a goal down.
Constantine also said
that Chhetri, the regular captain who gave away his armband for the game in favour
of Norway-based goalie
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, can
play in multiple positions up
front.

back in 2000, the 33-yearold shooter qualified in

three Olympic finals including his golden journey
of Beijing in 2008 (Athens
being the other one) in his
pet 10m air rifle, while he
missed out in Sydney and
London.
Bindra was last month
appointed as the chairman
of a review committee formulated by the NRAI to
"examine and identify in a
cold and ruthless manner"
the reason as to why
shooting failed to secure
any medal at the recentlyconcluded Rio Olympic
Games. (ANI)

TURA: The Joint Movement

Committee on the IndoBangla Corridor has decided to pursue the matter with
the governments of both
countries and West Bengal
and Meghalaya to make the
road link a reality soon.
In a meeting held at Tura
Circuit House on Saturday,
the Committee members had
a threadbare discussion on
the development of an alternative highway alignment
linking West Bengal and
Bangladesh through Hili
(West Bengal) and Mahendraganj in South West Garo
Hills.
It may be mentioned that
the Working Group on Improvement and Development of Transport Infrastructure in the North East
under National Transport
Development
Policy
Committee had strongly
recommended the highway
link
in
its
report.
Mahendraganj is the closest
approach from Meghalaya
to West Bengal with a
distance of 100km.

EKH DC hopes to
finish Aadhaar
enrolment by Dec
By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Administration is hoping to complete
enrolment of names under
the Unique Identification
Authority of India (UIDAI)
for issuing 'Aadhaar' numbers by December this year.
East Khasi Hills Deputy
Commissioner P.S Dkhar
said on Sunday that enrolment of names in rural areas
is likely to be complete by
September. He said response "is very good and
at least 100 people come in
a day for enrolling their
names".
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought
to know the status of Aadhaar implementation in Meghalaya during a videoconference with Chief Secretary K.S Kropha. The Centre has set December 2017
deadline for 100 per cent
enrolment in the country.

"A player of his calibre,

you have to find the space
for him. For me, his place is
behind the striker. He brings
other people into the game.
He has an eye for goal, he
sees the pass, and he works.
It's not like he's walking
about. Personally, I like to
play him behind the striker,"
said the coach.
"However, there is no
lock on his position. In some
games, I like him on the left
or the right, but at this point
in his career, I see him playing behind the striker," he
added in praise of the country's highest goal-scorer.
"I hate losing. So, whenever we win, it's okay for me.
Apart from the result, we got
to play. We need to play internationals to climb up the
rankings. Winning one
game won't help. Beating
Puerto Rico, who are above
us in the rankings, would
help but we need more.
That's what I'm trying to do
since I came here. (PTI)

Lapang-Mukul
truce for 2nd
time in 5 years
By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: Meghalaya
Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president
DD Lapang, who was projected as the leader of the
dissident group, has
patched up with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma that
led to the recent induction
of two ministers in the cabinet.
This is the second time
in five years that Lapang
showed his allegiance to
the Chief Minister.
In July 2011, after the
dissidents projected Lapang as the next leader,
Sangma dropped four ministers and inducted three
others to quell the rebel-

lion. Later in August, one

of the axed ministers,
Prestone Tynsong, was reinducted after Lapang's
mediation and that ended
the dissidence prior to the
Assembly polls in 2013.
Sources in the party
said during the meeting
prior to the recent reshuffle, Lapang had told Sangma that as a party president, he was ready to cooperate with him.
However, the sources
added that it was after realising that there was a rift
in the dissident group that
Lapang decided to support
the Chief Minister. After
Tynsong secured the support of a few legislators

Pope hails Teresa: Now a

saint, always a mother

Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity carry the relics of Mother Teresa on a stand

in the Vatican on Sunday. (PTI) Related reports on Pages 3, 9, 10

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis on Sunday proclaimed

Mother Teresa a saint, hailing her as the personification of
maternal love and a powerful advocate for the poor.
We may have some difficulty in calling her Saint Teresa, the pontiff said. Her holiness is so near to us, so
tender and so fruitful that we continue to spontaneously
call her Mother.
He added: She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt
for the crime - the crimes! - of poverty they created.
The unscripted comments came at a canonisation mass
attended by 100,000 pilgrims, including 13 heads of state
or government and hundreds of sari-clad nuns from Teresa's order, the Missionaries of Charity.
Queen Sofia of Spain and some 1,500 homeless people
also looked on as Francis described Teresa's work in the
slums of the Indian metropolis as eloquent witness to
God's closeness to the poorest of the poor.
To applause, he added: Mother Teresa loved to say,
perhaps I don't speak their language but I can smile. Let
us carry her smile in our hearts and give it to those whom
we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer.
The joyful celebratory atmosphere in the Vatican was
mirrored in Kolkata, where candles and flowers were laid
on Teresa's tomb at the headquarters of her order. It is a
day of rejoicing, a day of gratitude

Teachers Day celebrations pro-ILP groups on Sept 8
By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: As schools
and colleges in the city prepare for Teachers' Day celebrations on Monday, a section of the teachers fighting
for their rights wonders
whether the respect bestowed on the fraternity is a
one-day phenomenon.
The problems that are
plaguing the education sector for years are aplenty and
the State government
seems indifferent to finding

solutions. For instance,

Meghalaya does not have
an education policy despite
the government's contemplation.
R.S Khardewsaw, general secretary of All Meghalaya Lower Primary School
Association, said an education policy must be immediately implemented as it
would bring uniformity
among all categories of
teachers. "It is meaningless
to celebrate Teachers' Day
and show respect to teach-

ers for one day while the

government neglects them
on other days," he added.
Provincialization of services is another bone of contention for more than three
years now and the teachers'
fight for the cause has
yielded no result so far.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, JACATAM
chairman E.D Nongsiang
said Teachers' Day celebrations in the State "have become a mere ritual" because
the government neglects

even those teaching in rural

areas.
"Though the State government has taken a few
measures to improve the
service condition of teachers, these are not enough,"
said Nongsiang.
The JACATAM chairman also questioned the
current system of nominating teachers for awards as
he feels the process is not
transparent.
There is also a need for
revamping (Contd on P-10)

SHILLONG: The Special Court that was

the State government against 14 pressure

Sources said the Special Court, formed
in 2014, is currently examining the witnesses.
On the lengthy hearing, sources privy
to the developments said the magistrates

who were looking into the case were

changed twice or thrice and that there were
many witnesses to be examined in the court.
The sources said the lengthy process
was normal in a civil case that usually lingers for a long time as there were several
procedures involved, like issuing of notices and publishing of summons in newspapers. So far, only three pro-ILP groups CSWO, AIGU and SSSS - are attending the
hearings.
