Petrol price hiked by 36 paise/litre,

diesel cut by 7 paise
NEW DELHI: Petrol price
was on Friday hiked by 36
paise a liter, the third increase in two months, but
that of diesel was cut by
7 paise per litre in line with
international trends.
Petrol will cost Rs 64.57
a litre in Delhi from midnight tonight as against
Rs 64.21 currently. Similarly, diesel will cost Rs

52.52 a litre as compared

to Rs 52.59 at present.
This is the third increase in rates in petrol in
two months, while in the
case of diesel, it is the
second price reduction
this month. Indian Oil
Corp (IOC), the nation's
largest fuel retailer, said
petrol price is being hiked
by 28 paise per litre

(excluding state levies)

and diesel rate is being
cut by 6 paise (excluding
state levies).
After including a VAT
of 27 per cent on petrol,
the effective hike in petrol price in Delhi came to
36 paise a litre. In case of
diesel, the cut came to 7
paise a litre after including VAT of 17.42 per cent.

Petrol price was hiked

by 58 paise, excluding
state levies, on September 16. After including
state VAT, the hike came
to 78 paise per litre in
Delhi. The rate of diesel
was cut by 31 paise, excluding state levies (and
35 paise after including
VAT in Delhi).
"The current level of in-

ternational product prices

of petrol and diesel and
Rupee-US Dollar exchange rate warrant increase in selling price of
petrol and decrease in
selling price of diesel, the
impact of which is being
passed on to the consumers with this price revision," IOC said in a statement. (PTI)

Rupee up 24
paise at 66.61

MUMBAI: The rupee on

Friday staged a resounding
comeback after an overnight setback and ended
higher by a whopping 24
paise at 66.61 on fresh dollar unwinding from banks
and exporters.
The domestic currency
and financial markets
showed remarkable resilience and stability a day after the massive plunge following the news of surgical strikes by India on terror launch pads across LoC.
The rupee had suffered
its biggest single-day fall in
three months on Thursday.
Domestic stocks also
ended in a positive zone despite concern of global financial contagion from
Deutsche Bank's woes.
Forex dealers said apart
from selling of the American currency by exporters
and banks, expectations of
strong capital inflows coming into the country in the
long-run due to strong economic fundamentals largely
supported the rupee.
Though active trading
was held in check due to
simmering tensions in the
aftermath of 'surgical
strikes' alongside RBI's
fourth bi-monthly policy
statement scheduled to be
announced on October 4.
Despite a flat start at the
Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the
home currency staged a
strong rebound to hit a
fresh intra-day high of
66.57 before ending at
66.61, showing a solid gain
of 24 paise, or 0.36 per cent.
It briefly touched a low of
66.86 in early trade. The
newly constituted six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) headed by
RBI Governor Urjit Patel
will hold its first meeting on
October 3 and 4 to decided
on key interest rate. (PTI)

Stocks see swings, but

end on a positive note
MUMBAI: After remaining
volatile for much of the day,
stocks staged a mild recovery on Friday as the Sensex
mopped up modest gains
amid creation of fresh bets
with the beginning of the
October series of derivative
contracts. For the week
though, the market registered a fall. The NSE Nifty
in the process reclaimed the
8,600-level to close at
8,611.15.
The strong showing in
the October series added to
the investors' confidence
level to an extent. Recovery
in realty, oil and gas, infrastructure, power, auto, PSU
and metal stocks helped
both the indices end in the

positive terrain.
According to HSBC, the
global financial services
major, inflation is likely to
remain below the Reserve
Bank's early 2017 target of 5
per cent for the next 12
months, opening up space
for monetary easing. However, for the week, the
Sensex dropped 802.26
points, or 2.79 per cent, while
NSE Nifty lost 220.40
points, or 2.49 per cent.
The movement in the rupee too came as a big positive, which put up a strong
show against the American
currency. "Volatility eased
from the previous day, but
indecisiveness was visible.

Sachin would just

bat and shop,
reveals Ganguly
KOLKATA: Sachin Tendulkar wardrobe secrets,
Navjot Singh Sidhu and
Ajay Jadeja's unorganised
off field habits were some of
the anecdotes shared by
the former India cricketers in
a talk show at the Eden Gardens on Friday.
Former India captain
Sourav Ganguly revealed
that batting maestro Tendulkar would just 'bat and
shop' during his playing
days.
"He (Tendulkar) would
only bat and shop. He would
get a Test hundred and the
next day you would see him
shopping in an Armani or
Versace and you will see
them hanging in his wardrobe. He was very fond of
his clothes and had a great
wardrobe," Ganguly said
Talking about VVS Laxman, Ganguly said the elegant Hyderabadi batsman
was a perennial latecomer.
"You would see him taking a shower even as the no
4 and 5 batters were at the
crease. Even he would be
the last to board the team
bus," Ganguly said in a talk
show, organised on the occasion of Kolkata hosting
India's 250th Test on home
soil.
The show also featured
India coach Kumble, Kapil
Dev and Virender Sehwag.
Often credited for changing the face of Indian cricket by bringing in aggression
to the table, Ganguly said
his teammates were his jewels who delivered. (PTI)

corded in the minutes with

regard to the service tax assessments in the new dispensation, there was a long
discussion on the interpretation on the decision taken
in the last meeting and that
discussion consumed a lot
of time today." Jaitley said.
"That discussion was inconclusive and therefore it
will continue in the next
meeting on 18th (October)."
Non-ratification of even
one item on the minutes
means the whole minutes
are not agreed. Initially, it
was thought that the minutes should be put to vote
as those objecting to them
were far less than those
agreeing but Jaitley wanted
to take decisions with consensus and so it was postponed. (PTI)

India flounder, Kiwis grab Day 1 honours

Cheteswar Pujara acknowledging the crowd after his half century as Ajinkya Rahane looks on during Day 1
of the second Test against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. (PTI)
KOLKATA: India's vaunted
batting line-up failed to recover from the early blows
dealt by New Zealand's concerted bowling effort and
wobbled to 239 for 7 on the
opening day of the second
cricket Test here on Friday.
Barring Cheteshwar Pujara (87) and Ajinkya Rahane
(77), none of the batsmen
came good after skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat on the
relaid pitch of the historic

SPORTS
SNIPPETS

Eden Gardens stadium,

hosting India's 250th home
Test.
Ravindra Jadeja (0) and
Wriddhiman Saha (14) were
holding fort for the home
side when stumps were
drawn at the end of the 87th
over due to bad light.
The Kiwis, who were
dealt a blow this morning
when regular skipper and
top batsman Kane Williamson was ruled out of match

owing to illness, showed tremendous resilience to put

up a fine first day show.
Medium-pacer
Matt
Henry was the Black Caps
top wicket-taker with a haul
of 3/35 in his miserly 15
overs, while off-spinner
Jeetan Patel, brought into
the side due to the injuryforced exit of Mark Craig,
chipped in with two wickets.
India, who will regain the
top spot in ICC rankings if

they seal the three-match

series in this match, did not
make a very good start and
lost their top-three batsmen
even before the score had
touched 50.
Pujara and Rahane's
dogged fourth-wicket stand
of 141 was the high point for
India on Friday.
For the in-form Pujara, it
was his third half-century
from as many innings but a
lapse in concentration

Lodha effect: BCCI

staring at leadership crisis
MUMBAI: In the wake of the
Lodha Committee recommendations, BCCI is staring at a
leadership crisis as 95 per cent
of the top brass will be wiped
out if the report is implemented with retrospective
effect.
According to cricket
board sources, this matter
was discussed by the BCCI
members at the Special General Meeting here before it was
adjourned for on Saturday on
technical grounds.
The discussions focussed
on the implications of the
recommendations of the Supreme
Court-appointed
committee, with members
feeling that the BCCI is
caught between a rock and a

monetary policy scheduled

for next week, investor focus is expected to be back
on macros soon," said
Anand James, Chief Market
Strategist, Geojit BNP
Paribas Financial Services.
Extending Thursday's
sharp losses, the Sensex
opened lower. But emergence of value-buying
across the board meant it
wiped off early losses to
close higher 38.43 points, or
0.14 per cent at 27,865.96.
The index had tumbled 465
points in Thursday's session after India carried out
"surgical strikes" on
Wednesday night on terror
launch pads across the Line
of Control (LoC). (PTI)

GST Council agrees on 5 areas;

differ over 1st meet decision
NEW DELHI: In signs of
fracture, the Centre and
states on Friday disagreed
on decisions reached at the
first meeting of the GST
Council on service tax assessment although they
reached a consensus on
area based exemption in the
new tax regime.
The second meeting of
the all-powerful GST Council, headed by Finance Minister Jaitley, agreed on five

hard place, said a source who

attended the meeting.
The members were of the
view that if the recommendations are implemented, there
will be chaos in Indian cricket
as 95 per cent of the BCCI
leadership will be wiped out,
the sources said.
"We are sure that the
Lodha Committee wants betterment of cricket but who will
run Indian cricket if the entire
leadership is finished? There
will be organisational chaos
and it will spell doom for
Indian cricket," said a BCCI
member.
The member noted that
the situation has emerged in
the middle of the cricket season, with 13 international Test

matches lined up.

"If there is no experienced
leadership, who will manage
the affairs? Most work at the
lower level is done by the
honorary members," he said.
The member, on condition
of anonymity, said the
recommendations are generally implemented with prospective effect but the Lodha
committee has said its
suggestions should be implemented with retrospective
effect.
With regard to the cooling
off period, the BCCI members
feel it should be at least 6 years
instead of 3 years recommended by the Lodha
committee. (PTI)

Sania-Strycova team in semis

of Wuhan Open
WUHAN: Continuing with their red-hot form Sania Mirza
and Barbora Strycova moved to the semifinals of the
WTA Wuhan Open after a straight sets win over Timea
Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova, here on Friday. Seeded
third, Sania and Strycova defeated the sixth seed
Hungarian-Kazakhstan team 6-3 7-6 (5) in the quarterfinals USD 2,589,000 tournament. Sania Strycova broke
their rivals four times and dropped their serve thrice in
the one-hour and 18 minute contest. They next face
second seed Taipei team of Hao-Ching Chan and YungJan Chan. Sania has won three titles in her last four
tournaments she has played after splitting with Martina Hingis. (PTI)

MADRID: After another stellar week for

Spanish clubs in the Champions League,
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid resume their three-way battle for La
Liga supremacy on Sunday.
Real were the only Spanish side not to
win in midweek, but got a creditable 2-2
draw at Borussia Dortmund to remain on
course for the last 16.
However, the European champions
have now failed to win any of their last
three games as draws to Villarreal and Las
Palmas have seen their lead at the top of
the table whittled down to just a point by
Barca.

Zinedine Zidane's men conceded a late

equaliser for the second time in four days in
Dortmund, but defender Danilo insisted
Eibar will bear the brunt of Real's frustration
when they visit the Santiago Bernabeu this
weekend. Real are still without the injured
Brazilian duo of Casemiro and Marcelo, but
Zidane is likely to rotate his squad again with
Alvaro Morata, Marco Asensio and Pepe in
contention.
Barcelona continued to shrug off the absence of Messi as they came from behind to
beat Borussia Moenchengladbach on
Wednesday and face a third away game in a
week when they travel to Celta Vigo. (AFP)

India beat Bangladesh to lift

U-18 Mens Asia Cup

DHAKA: A last minute strike gave India a 5-4 victory in

their final game against hosts Bangladesh and helped
them lift the U-18 Men's Asia Cup here on Friday. In
what was almost a replay of the opening game, the two
teams treated the fans to a thrilling nine-goal encounter
with India emerging triumphant in the end to be crowned
the champions. India got off to a quick start and kept
the ball in their possession as they searched for an
opening to penetrate the rival circle. Their approach
paid off as they won their first Penalty Corner in the 6th
minute itself. After an initial error, India recovered and
improvised to take a shot on goal, but the attempt went
in vain. While India held the possession, Bangladesh
waited for the counter. From a counter, the home team
won a PC, and after the initial save by Pankaj Kumar
Rajak, M Roman Sarkar netted the ball to give the hosts
the lead. Hardik Singh was named the Man of the
Match, while Pankaj Kumar Rajak was named the Best
Goalkeeper of the tournament. (PTI)

ended his patient innings

for 87 that came off 219
deliveries and was studded
with 17 hits to the fence.
From being 46/3 in a jittery first session, Pujara and
Rahane batted with grit and
determination under the
blazing afternoon heat and
energy-sapping humidity.
The
duo's
stand
spanned three hours and
nine minutes but the Kiwis
made an impact in the final
session snapping four wickets. Pujara was set up brilliantly by left-arm pacer Neil
Wagner, who put a short
cover for him, and the Indian holed out to Martin
Guptill. However, it was not
a good day at his favourite
ground for Rohit Sharma (2),
who was dismissed by Patel. The right-hander also
looked to have hurt his left
shoulder while attempting a
single.
For the Kiwis, it was a
tale of two comeback men
as first 24-year-old Henry (3/
35), who had replaced their
pace spearhead Tim Southee created quite a flutter by
removing both the openers
-- Shikhar Dhawan (1) and
Murali Vijay (9).
Off the second ball of his
first over, Henry bowled
Dhawan who tried to cut in
an angled delivery only to
drag the ball back to his
stumps.
Replacing Lokesh Rahul,
Dhawan's stint lasted just 10
balls with scorecard reading
1/1 in the second over. Vijay

Langsning climb
to second spot
with 3-0 win
over Nongkrem
SHILLONG: Langsning secured a comfortable 3-0 win
over Nongkrem in the Shillong Premier League at the J
N Sports Complex in Polo on
Friday.
In the opening fixture of
the second leg Nongkrem
displayed a polished game
against Lajong, and it was
expected to be a contested
affair, however coming into
this match, Langsning tore
them apart and Nongkrem
looked helpless.
Langsning scored all the
3 goals in the first half of the
match, however could not
extend the lead in the second half.
Kynsaibor Lhuid scored
a brace on the 8th and 21st
minute. Chesterfield Nongdhar sealed the match on
the 29th minute scoring the
third, thereby adding to
Nongkrems misery.
Second session of the
match, was more of Nongkrem trying to counter and
Langsning defending their
lead, as after the break they
could not make any
progress, despite many
chances that came.
It was another rotten effort from Nongkrem, who
are nailing their place in the
relegation zone, meanwhile
Langsning moves up to second position after this
victory with 16 points.

from the youngster playing

only his fifth Test.
Continuing a rare lean
patch, skipper Kohli (9) was
steadying the ship with a
set Pujara, but Trent Boult
(1/33) dismissed the skipper.
Kohli got carried away
after an exquisite cover drive
that was cheered by the
small turnout and went for
an IPL-like shot chasing a
ball way outside the offstump to be caught brilliantly by Tom Latham.
The dismissal less than
half an before the lunch
break disturbed India's recovery plan before Pujara
and Rahane held firm in the
second session.
After aiding seam movement and offering variable
bounce in the morning, the
pitch turned slower on a
sultry afternoon, offering
occasional turn. However
Pujara and Rahane batted
sensibly to resurrect the innings.
They were never in a hurry and played according to
the merit of the ball, collecting timely boundaries in the
process.
Giving him a able support
at the other end was Rahane, who hit 11 fours in his
157-ball stay at the crease.
Rahane's resolute knock
came to and end when Patel
trapped him LBW with India exactly at 200.
Down the order, Ravichandran Ashwin played a
useful knock of 26 that was
laced with four hits to the
boundary.

Batting was a challenge

on an atypical Eden Garden
wicket said Ajinkya Rahane
but also conceded that he
and Cheteshwar Pujara were
guilty of not making their
partnership big enough.
Rahane scored 77 while
Pujara put on board 87, his
third consecutive Test halfcentury as India ended the
day one at 239 for seven.
The two batsmen men
raised a crucial 141-run
stand for the third fourth
wicket when India were
struggling at 46 for three.
"It was not a typical
Kolkata wicket. There was
something in the wicket. It's
two-paced. It was tough
very humid in the second
session. It was not a good
day for us. We felt wicket
will be very good. Generally
it's flat and good for batting.
It was there something for
fast bowlers," Rahane said
at press conference. (PTI)
