Your Target
At the end of this episode, you will gain competence in clarifying your values about teaching, and in
articulating and demonstrating ones personal philosophy of teaching. The end goal is to be a positive role
model for students.

Your Map
For you to be an effective teacher in the future it is important to first start with an awareness of your
values about teaching and then write your mission statement or philosophy that you will uphold with
conviction.
To reach your target, do the following tasks:
Step 1: Interview 3-5 teachers about their beliefs on the
why, what and how of teaching.
Step 2: Analyze the values and philosophy about
Step 3: Reflect about your own values and
teaching.
philosophy about teaching.
Step 4: Express these values and
philosophy in your own mission

Use the activity form provided for you to document your interview.

Name of the school observed: General Tiburcio de Leon National High School
School address: Mercado St. cor. Gen. T. de Leon Rd., Brgy. Gen. T. de Leon

As I observed some of the teachers in the school, Gen T DE Leon National

High School, they are all saying that their primary goals and objectives for the
students is for them to learn and also apply good attitudes and values in the
everyday life, they also want the students to be more knowledgeable enough to
appreciate why they have to learn the subject matter they are being taught to
them, because some students are asking why they have to learn those subjects
and particular topics, even on finding the value of X, although in the situational
setting of life we have not going to fine for the value of those literal coefficients
and variables, they have to used their own skills to be more efficient and
effective for explaining a particular facts of life that those subjects taught to
them can actually used in real life situations.

Read the following carefully before you begin to observe. Then write your observation report on the
provided space.
1. As you interview each teacher, ask each one to answer the three sentence completion items below:
a. My goal/s for my pupils/students is/are
As a teacher, we are teaching because we want our students to learn from us, and one of my
goals for my students are: first is to learn from me, and then I also want them to graduate but
most of it I want them to remember that despites of their success in life I am part of it and I am
the one who mold them to have a good future.
This statement reflects the teachers values/philosophy about WHY one should teach.
b. What I really want to teach to my pupils/students is/are
I really want to teach to share what I have learned and of course I also want them to
be inspired that in every problem there is always an accurate answer but in a different
solutions.

This statement reflects the teachers values/philosophy about WHAT one should teach.
c. I will teach my pupils/students by
I will teach them by heart, because teaching them by heart will be more exclusively
and understandable because we are trying to strikes their affective domains, and from it they
also learn.
This statement reflects the teachers values/philosophy about HOW one should teach.
2. Use the sentence completion form on the next page when you interview the teachers.
3. Fill out the Teachers Values and Philosophy Matrix to document the teachers responses.
4. Analyze the teachers responses by identifying the values and philosophies they reflect. You can use
the book, The Teaching Profession (Bilbao, et.al, 2006) as a guide.

Your Analysis
What values and philosophies are reflected in the teachers responses? You can jot down your
thoughts here, and then write your final answers on the Teachers Values and Philosophy Matrix on the
preceding page.
Teacher 1
I can say that the teacher is really inspired to teach because she wants to teach by heart
whichh is good because if you are trying to strikes the affective domains of the students, all of the domains
can affect it, even in psychomotor or their skills and even in the cognitive or in their mind, we can actually
affect the students performance in schools by guiding them.
Teacher 2
All of the teachers want their students to learn from them, and this teacher is quite genious
because she wants his and her students to learn by heart and mind, which is for me, it is really delegate to
learn by both heart and mind, and she also wants her students to have a good discpline and attitude
towards interactions to others, and she also wants to respect her as a teacher, we all know the motto that
dont do to others, that you dont want others do unto you, so if you want respect, you m8ust larn how to
respect others insights and perspectives.
Teacher 3
The last teacher I was encounter is that he totally wants her students to appreciate
mathematics, because some students really dont know why they are studying the topic and how they can
used it in a real life situations without even knowing that mathematics is really part of persons life even in
early ages.

Your Reflections
1.

Which views do you agree with? Disagree with? Explain

In dealing with their different views, I really agree with their different goals and perspectives
in teaching, of course you have to teach by heart, if you did not used your heart you will not feel the
students needs and they will be no learning between you and your student without the mind or
brain, because you actually have to give them knowledge they have to learn and sometimes,
applying those topics or just relating it on the real life situations will be a way on much deeper
understanding for them to understand the topic.

2.

This time, its your turn to answer the three sentence completion items.
a. My goal/s for my pupils/students is/are
First, I want them to learn, I want them to apply thosr knowledge in true to life or real life
situations so that it will not have some difficulties on understanding Mathematics. As our professor
help us understand how attitude and discipline are really important and how this help us when we are
in the field of teaching, I also want my students to realize that in this world, it is really important that
you have a good attitude and you are intelligent but the attitude is more important in the two
characteristics.

b.

What I really want to teach to my pupils/students is/are

I want them to understand the subject matter I have thought, I want them to realize that it is really
important that they understand the subject Mathematics because you can actually use it in everyday
life. And as I observe some of the students, they must learn values because they are some students which
do not respect their teachers and advisers, which is really not good for them, because we all kniw that
our second mother is our teacher, and if we did not respect them its just like we do not respect our own
mother.
c. I will teach my pupils/students by heart and mind.

3. What

philosophy

do

you

adhere

to?

Why?

I can conclude that no instructional materials can ever replaced a good teacher, because the
teacher will serves as the students guides and inspirations to achieve the goals of each students,
and the teacher will help the students mold their minds, the school is really the way of students to be
matured enough in every situations and problems they will encounter. And the teacher in
Mathematics can help his and her students to understand that in every problems there is always an
accurate answe with a different solutions.
4. A mission statement is clear and concise expression of your beliefs, values and philosophy. Write
your own mission statement here, but you are free to make your own format. Just K.I.S.S. it. Keep
it Short and Simple, so that you can remember it by heart. Most importantly, that you will live by

The classroom structure is good. We all know that plan is important to learning, especial y in teaching because this serves as our guide. Maybe I can recommend that hey have to maintain the cleanlines of the ro m to be able to have a clas ro m environment which is conducive to
learning.

2 .

The schedule of seatworks, quizzes, and examinations are well managed. Proper schedule is real y important because the teacher have to managed it nice so that he teacher wil know what o expect o students.

It is real y go d to managed the fol owit ask of the teacher and we have to managed it with students, we have to let he students co perate with
every task the teacher ask to do.

3. Record
Keeping

The teacher are the one who keep the records of the students.

It is real y important that the teacher are the one who compute the grade and scores of students.

Somehow, the teacher has its own task in making the grades of students and one of tgeir primary role is ro compute the grades of students.

4. Physical
Environment

Shortage of chairs are the problem of the school. All in al , it is nice because it is conducive to learning.

The environment is real y imporyant becaude this ef ects the leraning of the students, inside and outside the clasro m.

All they have to do is to improve and fix the chairs which is broken to be avle to use by the students, but al in al the clas ro m is real y go d.

5. Discipli
ne

The discipline is observed by their teacher.

The teacher must have the perfect at itude that hey have to show to the students, so that he students be able to know when to take jokes or to be
serious.

Maybe in acquir ng discipline of the students, the teacher can usef some hand signals o that it can be easy for them to managed al of the students.

6 .

The daily routines are very well done in every meetings.

The daily routines is also important because in daily routine ut is composed of prayer, checking of at endance and asignments.

The daily routines must apply every meetings so that it wil be part of their habit.

Your Analysis
In what area of classroom management was the teacher most effective? Which of the supportive measures
were effective? Why?
For me, the teacher is much effective in daily routines and in acquiring disciplines if the students,
one of the teacher I was observed, she used hand signals for the students to remain silent and be focused on
the discussion or on the task that they have to do. And for me, it is really effective because as I observed the
students, they really follow their teacher using these signals. And the daily routines are really done every
meeting, on a way that the students are really cooperating from the start of the discussion up to the end.

In what area of classroom management was the teacher least effective? Which of the supportive measures
were not effective? Why?
I think the teacher is least effective in the part of record keeping, because for me, it is the task of the
teacher to record the quizzes, seatwork and other paper works and group works of students. Because some
of the teachers are letting the students to record their own quiz, seatwork and etc. in their own index cards.

Suggest more effective ways for your answer in number 2.

One of the suggestions that I can say is that the teacher must be the one who manage and manipulate
the grades of students. Because it is one of a particular goal of the teacher as an instructor.

Your Reflections
1. Describe at least 3-5 characteristics of a teacher who can establish a well-managed classroom?
I can suggest that a goid teacher must have first a discipline, because as we all know, discipline is really
important and if you want your students to respect you, you have first show that you are really respectful.
Second, the teacher must have patient, as we all know patience is a virtue and we all know that students are
really naughty and the teacher must have patience so that they will be able to understand students
individual differences. Then lastly, the teacher must have the passion, because being passionate on
whatever you are doing is lead to success and in the field of teaching, you have to encourage to be effective
and efficient and you have to have a goal or objective in life which is letting the students learned not only
with mind but also with heart.

2. What characteristics do you have at present that can make you an effective classroom manager?
Elaborate how these characteristics can help you?
One of my characteristics that I am really proud of is being passionate, and I also want to setting up my
own goal to achieve or attain, and whenever I am only a student, I really want to teach and inspire students
in my own way, because doing something in your own way and as you want will lead to a successful effect.

3. What characteristics do you have at present that can hamper you from becoming an effective
classroom manager? How can you overcome these characteristics?
Maybe, I have to be much patient to be an effective classroom manager and as I teach Civil Engineering
students in Demonstration teaching, one of the comments of my professor is that I have to speak fluently
English language in teaching mathematics and to overcome these characteristic, I'll just have to encourage
myself to read more English books or articles and speak English whenever I reciting and etc.

How can the school address the issues/concerns and problems of the community?
Maybe they have first consider the students needd and how the environment affects their studies and
learning, but for me, the school and its location including its environment are really good for thr students.

What possible linkages can the community and the school have?
Mabe I can say that some linkages I cobsider is like the students are learning and at the same time
they are ask to use resources that can be found and can be used in making their projects or some activities.

Your Reflections
1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you learn that you
might have taken for granted before?
As I go around the community near where the school located, I can conclude that despites of its
problems, it is also a good school especially for students, and this things I learn might be taken for granted
because I wipl have an idea on how they will learning using the resources availablr inside the school.

2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
I think my role in the community is that I will be a role model of the students, parents and
fellowteachers, I will be a role model to the students because I will let them learn the subject matter but
also the good attitude that will lead them to success, and also because I have the courage to show to them
that the attitude is really important asof this days, and my profedsor is very particulate in terms of the
attitude and the discipline, that's why I just want it to share to them also.
I will be a role model to the parents because I want them to engaged on the certain events or some
programs that happened in school and I want them to be informed about how is the performance of their
child.

I will be a role model with my fellow teachers because I want to be an open minded person and I also
want to share what I know, or some techniques that may give them opputunities to teach much easier.
3. How you will encourage more community participation among teachers and students?
To encourage them, they must be engaged on the activities inside the school, the parents must be
informed regarding the performance of their child so that the students will be guided.

According to the responses of the students, some conclusions that I have is that the global teacher
must be knowledgeable enough to be able to share their own knowledge to the students because it is really
important to have knowledge because as a teacher you are sharing what you have learned and you also
have learning from your students.
Then next is that the skills of the teacher to be able to be a global teacher is also important because
this will help the students much understanding about the topic using the skills and efforts that the teacher is
exerting just to make them understand that the subject matter that the teacher being thought is really
important.

From the responses of the teachers, what conclusions can you make about the skills that a global
teacher should have?
It is really important that you have skills that can be used in teaching because if you didnt have
skills the teaching is useless and you will not get the attention of your students, and also that is why we
have motivation whenever we start discussions because we are getting the attention of students.
From the responses of the teachers, what conclusions can you make about the values that a global
teacher should have.

The values is really important n todays times because you have to be disciplined and
respectful so that the students will respect you in the way you want which is as a teacher it is your
primary goal to serves as a role model to your students and build their personalities in your own
especial way.
Collect articles or readings about Global education the global teacher. Enrich your answers in 1-3
with these readings. Place the additional learnings/insights you got from your readings.

According to The Guardian, global teaching is used to "give students a global awareness and
emphasize the fact that we work in a global market and if the students can develop interpersonal
relationships with a sense of global citizenry, then they will be successful in all that they do".
As the world becomes more interconnected, teachers are diversifying their approach to
education. Today, global teaching is not only applied in the classroom, but on social media
platforms which expose students to a large and diverse population of ideas and cultures.
Global teaching encompasses a range of interests that can cover anything from how other
students live in another culture to environmental issues. Global teaching facilitates an open-minded
approach; it implements lessons that illustrate the perspective of other people in the world that may
not have the same cultural values and traditions as the students. It is important to learn about other
cultures to gain a deeper understanding of how to approach global issues and communicate more
effectively.

Your Analysis
1. What values are reflected by the policies and guidelines found in the school or teacher manual.
Put your answers in the matrix above. You may choose to put some additional comments here.
Some valuies I have encounter just by founding the different policies and guidelines of
teachers, I conclude that being a teacher is a really secured profession because you are the one
who mold the students and its quite hard for you to do that, thats why teachers have given
different incentives.
2. Cite the legal provisions/laws that are exemplified by each of the following guidelines/policies
that you included in your matrix. To help you, focus on the provisions of the following:
a. Magna Carta for Public School Teachers
b. Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers
c. Manual of Regulations for Private School
d. Certain parts of the Labor Code
e. Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994
Write your additional comments here.
The following policies or guidelines must follow in todays times, because this will be the
rights of the teachers to know that there is some provisions of government that is made just for the
teachers. It is really important to know that.

Your Reflections
1. How do you feel about the policies and guidelines concerning teachers? How will you respond
to them in the future?
As I have read the following policies and guidelines I really shock in a way that there
is this guidelines and policies that will really inspires me to be a good teacher. And also this is
really important so that we have to understand it very well.

2. What insights/realizations did you have about the demands of being a professional teacher?
How will you meet these challenging demands in the future?
I realize that being a professional teacher will needs a much determination that you
will inspire students is my own way an I will actually help them in their future or to have a
good future.

3. What are your values and strengths that can help you become a true professional?
I think some of my strengts is the values that I have and the determination that I will
face every problem that I will wncounter with full of determination and also I want to be a
respectful teacher, as we all know nowadays, there are so many teachers in the Philippines as
well, but I want to be a unique one, and I want to teach by heart and mins so that the affective
domains of my students will be affected, and I will be proud of myself if I will do my duties
and responsibilities as a teacher by heart and mind, and also I want my parents be proud of
me and also my professors that mold me for who I am today.
