INTRODUCTION
According to Oxford students Dictionary for Second Edition stress is
defined as worry and pressure that is caused by having too much to deal
with while music is defined as arrangement of sounds and patterns to be
song or played on instruments. The soothing power of music is wellestablished. It has a unique link to our emotions, so can be extremely
effective management tool. Listening to music can have a tremendously
relaxing effect on our minds and bodies and also give a beneficial effect on
our physiological functions, our body and decreasing the levels of stress
hormones. We believe that music is effective way in reducing students
stress and also relaxing our mind and body. Therefore the purpose of this
research is to identify which type of music can reduce stress among 80
students from module II in S21 of Malacca Matriculation College (MMC).
We choose music as our subject research because we believe that
listening music is the simple and the best tool to reduce stress among
students. In addition, in MMC many students facing stress with their
homework, financial, friends and others. This student should be exposed to
the effective way to reduce their stress to keep their body and mid healthy.
On the same note, based on the article written by Jane Collingwood
(2007), music has been used for hundreds of years to treat illnesses and
restore harmony between mind and body. According to a scientific study to
measure the potential benefits of music, they have found that listening to
music can relieve depression and increase self-esteem ratings in elderly
people. As we know, musical preference varies widely between individuals,
so only we can decide what we like and what is suitable for each mood in
reduce stress. Our first hypothesis is different music for different people.
Second hypothesis is listening to the music can help the student in MMC to
reducing their stress.
Furthermore, our objective carrying this research is to determine which
type of music can reduce stress. Secondly, to determine the students
opinion on how music can help them in reducing their stress. Lastly, to
determine the effects of music in reducing the students stress.

Lastly, we hope that our research on how music can reduce stress can
give awareness to the MMC students that music is an extremely effective
stress management tool. In addition, the music does not start up so much
cost because we can download it from any website either for free or paid.
Besides, the device that contains songs such as hand phones and MP3 is
very easy to carry everywhere, anytime and anyone.

OBJECTIVES:
i)
ii)

To determine which type of music can reduce stress.

To determine the students opinion on how music can reduces stress.

iii) To determine the effects of music in reducing the students stress.

METHODOLOGY
Our research is a quantitative research whereby we will limit our
respondents to students of Malacca Matriculation College (MMC).
Eighty students between 18 to 19 years from module II of MMC were
selected to answer our questionnaires. All of them are from S21P1, S21P2,
S21P3, S21P4, S21P5, S21P6, S21P7 and S21P8. Both of the genders are
included in this research. 38 of them are males and 42 of them are females.
The respondent comes from different races like Malay, Chinese, and Indian.
All the respondent were provided questionnaire to be answered and we
assured that all data would be confidential.
In this research, we use a questionnaire to collecting data. The
questionnaire consists of 15 questions. Question 1-5 related about the
interest of student on music. Question 6-13 reflects our research topic. These
questions were asked to know whether music can help the student to release
their stress. Question 14-15 provided just to know whether music is helpful or
not helpful the student in their study and they need to give their own
opinion.
All the questionnaires were distributed to the 80 respondents. Each
respondent was given ten minutes to complete the questionnaire. We took
seven weeks to complete the research process. Firstly, the data was
distributed on 10 to 11 February 2014. Then the data was analyzed from 13
to 15 February 2014. Next we tabulate the data. Finally, we drew the graph
and commented about the graph.
