Investigating employee turnover among immigrants in Australian Engineering /

IT organizations.

Abstract
<<Insert your abstract here. About 100-200 words and no more than quarter of a page>>

Australia attracts tens of thousands of immigrants annually and is among top immigrant
destination globally. These immigrants come from diverse cultural, religious, regional
and social backgrounds and may face difficulties to gel within the Australian society.
Finding a suitable job is one of the most important factors to settle in a new society and
contribute towards its economy. It is a common observation that usually immigrants face
difficulty in finding appropriate jobs commensurate with their qualification and
experience and often are unable to find a suitable job even after years. Each job switch
has an associated cost for employers in terms of investment incurred on training of new
employees, lost productivity, associated costs of hiring new employees etc. These costs
are especially high among Engineering / IT organizations due to obvious nature of their
work.
The aim of this research is to find rate of turnover among Immigrants working in
Engineering / IT organizations.
1. Introduction
<< Insert the introduction of your proposal. This should describe the research topic/research area in general.
This section should be between 100-300 words and no more than half a page. >>

2. Literature Review
<< Insert the literature review or background of your research area. This should state the motivation for doing
your research. State here that the existing literature lacks this, and that your thesis would fill that gap in the
literature. This section should be between 200-500 words and no more than one page. >>

Existing research has proven that Employee turnover is one of the most costly HR
challenge, which can have considerable impacts on organizations profitability. Data is
also available on the costs incurred as a result of employee turnover. A few of which
are:
1

Recruitment of replacements with their associated administrative costs such as

advertising, screening etc.

Lost productivity during the period when employee has left.
Costs associated with training of new employee for the required job/skills.
Costs for the overall economy of the country in terms of increased claims of unemployment benefit

Australian Mines and Minerals Association (AMMA) has done some work in Australia
labour market regarding employee turnover rates primarily in services sector. According
to AMMA the sample size of the surveys was limited, therefore data derived from them
has indicative value but is by no means a comprehensive study of the industry.
3. Research Questions
<< Insert the questions that your research would address. You may choose to list the question(s) that your
research addresses in a point-wise manner. This section should be between 100-300 words and no more than half a
page. >>

The aim of this research proposal is to find rate of turnover among Immigrants working
in Engineering / IT organizations.

Hypothesis is that turnover rate is more in Immigrants which will be confirmed

after survey / analysis of the data.

4. Research Objectives
<< Insert the research objectives to express your research questions. Objectives are the ultimate deliverables.
Different types of objectives lead to different types of research methodology and design. This section should be
between 100 300 words and no more than half a page. >>

Total immigrant population in Australia is approx. 6.4 Million people, which is more than
27 % of Australian national population. These statistics are the inspiration of this
research proposal to study turnover in immigrants. In this research proposal it has
been hypothesized that rate of turnover is higher in immigrants than in locals. The same
will be confirmed and subsequent to that affirmation, factors will be assessed for this
reason. Finally necessary remedial measures will be proposed.

5. Research Methodology
<< Describe how you will address the research questions and objectives. You should refer to an accepted research
method or approach. Describe how information will be gathered, analysed and reported. This section should be
between 200-400 words and no more than three quarter of a page. >>

Study existing job market and reports on employee turnover in Australia.

Selection of an appropriate number of IT / Engineering companies (15-20), as a

research sample which would be studied.

Acquire Employee turnover data from these organizations.
Segregate Immigrants and Locals and establish a basic turnover rate among

immigrants.
A survey will be conducted among existing employees of these organizations to

ascertain following:
o Employee turnover among Immigrants.
o Employee turnover among native Australians.
Statistical Analysis on results of survey.
Hypothesis is that turnover rate is more in Immigrants which will be confirmed

after survey / analysis of the data.

If the hypothesis is confirmed reasons for this pattern will be ascertained.
Recommendations of improvement.

6. Significance
<< Present the significance of your research. Describe how this research will contribute to both theory and
practice. This section should be between 100-200 words and no more than one-quarter of a page. >>

Immigrants are the harbinger of Australian economy. Earlier the immigrant settles the
more it contributes. Taking a lead from findings of this research, employers in technical
organization (Engineering / IT) will be able to pin point factors addressing which they
can reduce rate of turnover and thereby save significant costs associated with labour
turnover. Similarly Federal / State Governments will have recommendations based on
empirical evidence to formulate Immigrant friendly policies.
