I get on with girls!

1. Intro warm-up situation

Narration

Do you remember Oscar, Antonio Cortez brother and his girl problem? He
couldnt talk or ask that girl out, but destiny had prepared something for him.
Oscar was looking for a job about two months ago, and finally he got one, but
what a surprise! When he found out that girl Rosy was working at the same
place. Can you believe it?

Oscar and Rosy get on very well, he thought she was very kind and funny. And
she thought he was great, too.
After a while they started to fall in love each other. Oscar was a bit nervous but
one day he summoned up the courage to ask Rosy out and she said yes!

Conversation

Would you like to go to the movies with me?

Er..ok

Narration
So, they went to the movies and after that they became boyfriend and girlfriend.
Oscar was so happy , he couldnt believe he was finally going out with Rosy, the
girl of his dreams.

After a few months they decided to move in together and Rosy started to live at
Oscars apartment. But they started to argue and they often fell out.
One day, things got so bad that they decided to split up. Oscar tried to start his
life without Rosy but he couldnt get over her. He was always thinking about her
and knew there would never be anyone else for him.

One day when he was walking in the park, Oscar bumped into Rosy. They
chatted and went for a coffee. Oscar said that he was sorry too and told her
how much he had missed her. So they decided to make up.

Phrasal verbs are idiomatic expressions that are formed by combining verbs
with prepositions or adverbial particles completely after their meaning.
In most cases these verbs are motion go, come, run , move, etc. Or onesyllable verbs in vague sense- do, get, put, give, hold, make, take, etc.
Followed by different prepositions or adverbs: about, down, in, off, on, out.
These verbs are used in written English but above all in spoken English.

We must not confuse phrasal verbs with prepositional verbs, as these are also
formed with a verb and a preposition. The main difference between the two
depends on the meaning of the verb.
1. In the case of a compound verb, the adverbial particle modifies the verb
meaning. Sometimes it brings a slight nuance and the other changes
completely the meaning of the verb.
For example, in the next sentence He gave up, the verb give that usually
means giving - changes completely the meaning and translates the phrase
as the left. Or for example the verb take (take into Spanish) means take
off when followed by off.
Example: Take it!
The plane takes off
2. In the case of a preposition, the prepositional verb does not change the
meaning of the verb, but serves to introduce a complementary meaning.
Example: Look at this cat! (Verb + preposition + complement)
Rarely the particle does not change the meaning of a phrasal verb.
Ex: Ring / Ring up
The main particles are
About, along, around, /round, away, back, down, in off, out, over, through, up.
Each combination verb + particle has its own meaning (found in the dictionary)
however; each particle has a general specific meaning, if not accompanied by
the verb.
Some Phrasal verbs examples:
Sit about
Walk across
Move along
Look round
Turn away

Come in
Take off

Construction of compound verbs:

1. The particle can never be omitted, while the complement may be present or
not. Unlike prepositional verbs which are always followed by a
complement.
Example: I rely on my friends (verb + preposition + complement).
2. If the verb is followed by a complement, this can be placed between the verb
and the particle or after.
Example: He put on the kettle (verb + particle + complement). He put the
kettle on (verb + complement + particle).
3. In the imperative, to give more strength to the order, the particle is at the end
of the sentence.
Example: Turn the light on!
4. When the particle has an abstract meaning, it is better to leave it near the
verb.
Example: Dont give up the fight!
5. When the complement is a pronoun, it is placed before the particle
necessarily.
Example: He put it on (verb + pronoun + particle)
Idioms are lexical categories marked by culture; therefore, they are difficult to
translate literally, because they contain metaphorical meaning.
