GENERAL INFORMATION
A hydraulic drifter is a drilling machine accessory, which cannot work without an external power supply.
A hydraulic drifter includes one or several integrated accumulators which contain pressurized nitrogen.
This integrated accumulator(s) should not be modified or serviced without a good understanding of the workshop manual contents.
The operator must have acquired the necessary knowledge and be qualified to drive such machines.
He must be fully aware of the safety instructions concerning the carrier and comply with them.
According to the local regulations and rules, the operator should wear :
---hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, industrial gloves, dust mask, ear protector and high---visibility warning jacket.
Ample, loose clothing, watch bracelet, can in some circumstances be dangerous.
The operator should not consume alcohol, medicine or any substance which might provoke drowsiness during working hours.
It is imperative to study and respect local rules concerning the use of drifters and their use on site.
11
2.4. Safety
OPERATION
When a drifter is being used underground, the operator should be particularly aware of his immediate environement.
Before beginning a drilling operation he should insure that all unstable blocks, likely to fall with the vibrations transmitted by the tool, have
been scaled.
He must alert the maintenance service immediately in case of oil leaks, unscrewing of components, and have hoses changed when the outer
cover is damaged.
For explosive atmosphere applications, use fluids recommended, and use water injection only.
Use tooling recommended by the carrier Manufacturer.
Ensure that the pressurized grease injection air circuit is in operation for a minimum of 10 seconds before drifter start---up.
The operator must ensure that the maintenance programme proposed by the constructor is respected and that the tool retainer (flushing
nozzle) is in place before use.
The drilling of a hole should always be carried out with the guide rail placed against the rock.
The drilling of a hole should always be started at reduced pressure to avoid diversion and bending of the rods.
Never remove the lid of the accumulator without unscrewing the inflating screw to release the pressure (This operation must be carried out by
the maintenance technician).

HYDRAULIC ACCUMULATOR(S)
A hydraulic drifter includes one or several accumulators which contain pressurized nitrogen.
Never remove the lid of the accumulator without unscrewing the inflating screw to release the pressure (This operation must be carried
out by the maintenance technician).
Only dedicated special maintenance tools should be used to service the accumulator(s). See the workshop manual.
26
HYDRAULIC FLUID
Hydraulics fluids and lubricants can be dangerous for health if not used properly.
Avoid ingestion, skin contact and inhalation.
Safety data sheets for oils and lubricants should be obtained from the lubricant supplier.
Should hydraulic oil come into contact with eyes, rince them abundantly, consult a physician.
Should hydraulic oil come into contact with skin then wash off immediately.
Fine jets of hydraulic fluids at high pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious injury.
--- Be sure the circuit is not under pressure prior to any intervention.
--- Do not use your hand to check for hydraulic fluid leakages.
--- If hydraulic fluid penetrates the skin, get medical help immediately.
For explosive atmosphere applications, use recommended fluids, and use water injection only.

8. Installation advice
8.1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
All mechanical equipment can be dangerous when used without care or if in a bad state of repair.
Ensure that the carrier is equipped with safety decals located in visible places for the operator.
Ensure that the operator or the technician reads and understands the decals and consults the manuals before maintenance, installation or
operation.
Ensure that the operation and maintenance manual remains at operators disposal.
8.2.MOUNTING DRIFTER ON CARRIER
The installation should comply with applicable directives and standards, for example : 2006/42/EC --- NF EN 982, and ATEX directive : 94/9/EC
(Only for explosive atmosphere applications).
The carrier Manufacturer defines and checks that technical means are established to ensure that Montabert instructions are followed
concerning :
--- Pressure limitation at specified values.
--- The quality of all fluids (oil, water, air) and the regulation of temperature of these fluids according to Montabert specifications.
In case of explosive atmosphere, use fluid compatible with the application.
--- The pressure and good working order of air pressurized grease injection circuits.
--- The use, by the operator, of clearly defined recommended quality tooling.
The drifter has to be electrically grounded via the carrier frame;
The manufacturer of the carrier in which the hydraulic drifter is incorporated should take all necessary measures to insure that the instructions
provided by Montabert concerning the mechanical fixing of the drifter on the cradle, the working pressure, the supply flow, the pipe dimensions
and connection to the carrier circuit be followed.
All hydraulic hoses and tubes used should be compatible with the maximum pressure used, and mechanically secured.
Take all necessary measures to avoid loss of oil when connecting the drifter to the carrier.
36
Installation advice
8.3. MECHANIC
Avoid all functional interference between the drifter and other mechanical elements on the carrier.
Supply hoses should be set---up in such a way that they are not subject to strain.
A drifter fixing plate which simplifies the dismounting of the front part of the drifter for easy access to the shank adaptor should be
envisaged.
The user should be informed of the rules and regulations concerning special applications.
The operator and the maintenance mechanic should be informed of handling procedures recommended by Montabert.
8.4. HYDRAULIC
Protect the drifter from accidental excessive pressure, on the strike function as well as the rotation at 30 bar above operating pressure
indicated.
Provide a means of decompression for hydraulic circuits in case the operator or maintenance mechanic should have to intervene.
8.5. OTHER
Indicate the noise level and means of protection for the operator (For each type of carrier).
The carrier manufacturer should provide the maintenance technician and operator with a service schedule.
