This directory is the latest publication designed to keep
people abroad informed about what German biotechnology companies have to offer. The third in a line of
guides, it follows directories dedicated to biomanufacturing and biotechnological contract research in Germany.
The current compilation from Health Made in Germany covers the market for biotechnology that is applied to health, nutrition and wellbeing. The guide is
the first of its kind and provides not only access to all
major biotechnology players in the sector, but also
contains a comprehensive overview of this market segment in Germany.
Finding the right partner with the right skills can be a
difficult task especially for companies from abroad
wishing to rely on German expertise in the biotechnology sector. To facilitate this, Health Made in Germany
has published directories listing German biotech firms
that fill key market niches.
Health Made in Germany is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology
(BMWi). Focal points of the program are pharmaceuticals, medical biotechnology, medical technology and
telemedicine.

BIOTeCHNOLOGy FOR HEALTH,

NUTRITION AND WELL-BeING
MADE IN GERMANY
Industrial biotechnology utilises enzymes and microorganisms to develop biobased products across a broad
range of sectors. In short, it is the application of natures
own toolset to industrial production, where renewable
and sustainably grown resources are the starting point
for efficient processes that reduce energy and disposal
costs. The growth of white biotechnology thus promises numerous environmental benefits and is in strong
accordance with global efforts towards a low carbon,
knowledge-based economy. Moreover, the field of industrial biotechnology is regarded as key for a sustainable economy in which biological resources serve as the
input for industrial processes, namely the bioeconomy.
The German Federal Government is providing strong
support to the concept of the bioeconomy via a dedicated national research strategy.
WhiTE BiOteCHnology
While the industrial biotech sector in Germany does include many large chemical industry corporations, the
research and development landscape is mainly characterised by the activity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to a company survey carried
out by the information platform biotechnologie.de on behalf of the German Ministry of Education and Research
(BMBF), there were in total 61 dedicated biotech companies active in the industrial business sector in 2012. A
part of them active in food biotechnology, health care
and drug production is represented in this guide.
Biotechnology includes traditional activities such as
baking and brewing, although innovation is currently
driven by modern molecular tools and techniques such
as genomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Many biotechnological activities involve microbes and enzymes.

On the topic of applications of industrial biotechnology,

most are likely to think of biofuels and biopolymers,
which indeed dominate the various fields of activity.
However, these are only one part of a huge spectrum of
innovative products. Today, biotechnological know-how

is fundamentally important for the production of healthand personal care products, in the food and beverages
sectors, and in drug manufacturing. The aim of this guide is to provide an overview of German companies active in this particular field of industrial biotechnology.

Here, the key drivers in the area of microbe optimisation

are metabolic engineering, bioinformatics and systems
biology. Germany has a long-standing tradition in the
study of microbial diversity and in the development of
enzyme technologies. This is alongside a high density of
academic and non-academic research institutes and
companies, variously focused on the discovery, development and optimisation of technical enzymes. Other
fields that are currently gaining a strong footing in Germany are bioanalytics und screening technologies for
natural compounds.

SAFE AND HEALTHY FOODS

Microbes (for example yeast) or enzymes are traditionally
used to produce beer and wine, as well as dairy products
such as cheese. Today, the food and beverage industry is
rediscovering fermentation as a crucial technique for
product innovation. Fermentation can provide a range of
benefits, such as unique flavours, nutritional benefits,
textures and safety (shelf life), all the while maintaining a
label of 100-percent natural. Moreover, enzymes play an
essential role in bringing more nutritious, tasteful and
easily digestible food and beverages to the market. Alongside basic nutrition, these functional foods, which contain biologically active ingredients known as nutraceuticals, are also considered to provide health benefits. While
the health-promoting effects of nutraceuticals remain a
subject of research, they are broadly expected to contribute to the role played by food and beverages in tackling
the effects of demographic change.
COSMETICS WITH BIOTECH COMPOUNDS

Natural and organic personal care is the fastest growing
sector of the global personal care industry. Consumers
are demanding higher performance and eco-efficiency
in their personal care and household cleaning products.
There is a clear turn away from oil-based chemical production towards renewable products and natural ingredients that originate from biomass feedstocks. Todays
cosmetics often contain extracts from marine resources, microalgae, fruits, and even ingredients sourced
from bacteria. Flavourings, antioxidants, pigments, vitamins, biosurfactants and glycans are just some of the
many ingredients that biotech know-how is contributing
to modern care products. The use of enzymes in industrial processes is also transforming the way pharma
companies manufacture their drugs, and as biologics
become ever more important to pharma development,
the field of biotechnology has begin to shape industrial
production processes more strongly than ever before.

features of whole cell biocatalysis and purified enzymes
