LIST OUT AND EXPLAIN IN DETAIL THE TEN (10) MOST IMPORTANT
FACTORS THAT YOU THINK ARE NECESSARY TO ENSURE SAFETY IN
YOUR ORGANIZATION.
Company Background.
United Plantations Berhad
From a modest beginning in 1906, United Plantations Berhad has, over the years, grown in size
and stature to emerge as one of the larger plantation groups in Malaysia.
The Companys principal business activity is in the cultivation and processing of palm oil,
coconut and other plantation crops in a sustainable manner.
Its subsidiary companies are engaged in several downstream activities such as; processing palm
oil; and manufacturing; packing/distributing of end products in the form of cooking oils, edible
oils, specialty fats and soap products.
United Plantations Berhad is one of the most efficiently managed, eco-friendly and integrated
plantation companies in Malaysia and is well known globally for its best agricultural practices
and high quality standards.
In Malaysia UPs total Landbanks consist of approximately 40,855 hectares. The main focus is
cultivation of oil palms (90%) and coconuts (10%). In Malaysia, United Plantations Berhad
operates 6 Palm Oil Mills and the Unitata refinery, a subsidiary that has been cooperating for a
number of years with AarhusKarlshamn AB; a leader in the global speciality fats sector.
With the acquisition of two Indonesian plantation companies in 2006 and 2009, the total planted
hectarage in Indonesia at present is approximately 10,000 hectares. A new "State of the Art"
60mt per hour mill was commissioned at July 2010 on Lada Estate, Kalimantan.
United Plantations Berhad is known for its high level of social responsibility and environmental
awareness together with the Company's leading role in the research and development of high
yielding palm products.

United Plantations Berhad possesses considerable know-how in plant breeding, agronomy, and
micro-propagation through its own R&D facilities for the development of new and improved
planting materials as well as improved crop husbandry practices.
This has resulted in United Plantations Berhad being recognized as one of the highest yielding,
cost-competitive and innovative plantation companies in Malaysia.
United Plantations Berhads connection with the AarhusKarlshamn group is seen as a very
important business strategy in providing traceability and thereby the ability to control the raw
materials from the agricultural source to the final product - contrary to many other refineries,
who have to source their raw materials from the open market
Safety and Health in my Organization at U.P Berhad

Nowadays in the developing plantation the safety no more focused on

the workers only but briefly can divide into three categories in which should
be concern on; firstly is the occupational health and safety (workers);
secondly the safety of the environment and finally, the community health
and safety (crops).
Safety in plantation can be also defined as occupational health and
safety concerned on the application of discipline with a broad scope involving
many specialized fields. Therefore the safety in plantation should be aim at;
1. The promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical,
mental and social well-being of workers in the plantation;
2. The prevention among workers of adverse effects on health caused by
their working conditions;
3. The protection of workers in the plantation area from risks resulting
from factors adverse to health and accidents;

4. The placing and maintenance of workers in an plantation environment

adapted to physical a Proper attire or clothes should be wearied during
in the plantation. The attire wore should give protection from physical
injuries. Furthermore the worker should wear shoes or boots. The
safety helmet or cap also has to be a part of the safety requirement to
avoid direct injuries to the head.
5. The usage of gloves and masks are necessary during handling the
pesticide, herbicide or insecticide. In addition, when preparing or
calibrating pesticide and also when applying it in the plantation, safety
action should taken in term of not exposing directly to the pesticides
because it have high toxicity.
6. Workers should alert with the usage and handling of tractors or
machine in the plantation. One should not simply drive on tractors
without any knowledge about it. Furthermore, during the tractor is
active or operating, one should obey the rules of operation and not
take it for granted. The most important, while tractors are moving,
dont try get into it and the appropriate way is the wait till the tractor
stop.
7. The labeling of pesticides or herbicide should be clear and kept in
special place with notice of the hazardous. The dangerous or toxic
compounds should be kept separately from other materials.
8. During planting, several measures are taken to prevent soil
degradation and conserve soil fertility. On hilly land, contour terracing
is carried along steep slopes. Silt pits help reduce the length of slope
while trapping soil and plant nutrients. Pruned fronds placed along the
slope minimize soil erosion and fertilizer loss. Very often, hilly forest
areas with slopes greater than 250 are left untouched.
9. Leguminous cover crops fix nitrogen in the soil, recycle organic matter,
improve soil structure, keep out weeds, reduce soil compaction and

erosion, and promote rainfall acceptance. In oil palm plantations at

least 6 species of leguminous crops are planted for the benefits they
provide.
10.

In coastal plantings, emphasis is placed on proper drainage and

water management. This prevents over-draining and deterioration of

fragile acids sulphate and peat soils.
11.

The pest control like usage of agrochemicals should be taken, as

the last resort and biological control should be given priority. If use of
agrochemicals is inevitable, controlled usage should be implemented
with emphasis on the amount and timing of application.
CONCLUSION
Therefore, it is very important to always monitor the safety in estate mainly in this sector to less
any losses. Monitoring frequency should be efficient to provide the maximum safety of the
occupational health and safety (workers), the safety of the environment and
the community health and safety (crops).
