1-/2-pole gas-insulated switchgear for

AC traction power supply

siemens.de/rail-electrification

The SF6-insulated switchgear of the type Sitras 8DA11 (1-pole) and

Sitras8DA12 (2-pole) are intended for f eeding the overhead contact line
sections in AC traction power supply systems.
The design is based on the proven 3-pole type of the switchgear 8DA10 / 8DB10
for power supply companies and industrial plants.

Features
Maximum safety of personal and installation proven by extensive type testing
Cost-effective because maintenance-free and compact design
Almost boundless flexibility for all imaginable requirements due to modular
design
Vacuum circuit-breaker, by switching in vacuum
no creation of toxic substances by arcs in SF6
insulating properties of SF6 not impaired
Risk of internal arc faults reduced by single-pole enclosure

Requirements
Design, technology
Metal-enclosed, metal-clad, gas-insulated fixed-mounted
circuit-breaker switchgear for indoor installation
Single-pole metal enclosure
Insulating gas SF6
Vacuum circuit-breaker
Three position disconnector as busbar disconnector and
feeder earthing switch
Make-proof earthing with vacuum circuit-breaker
Panel spacing 600 mm with all versions

Modular construction with standard enclosures gives

flexibility for panel variations and additional modules
Extension of busbar possible without interrupting
operation
Panels with new design can be added to existing switchgear without any measures (same panel height, same
busbar position)
Dielectric strength independent of site altitude and
climatic conditions

Resistance to internal arc faults

The probability of the occurrence of an arc fault is an order
of magnitude less than with air-insulated switchgear,
because
all causes of faults due to external factors such as
pollution layers, moisture, vermin and foreign bodies
have been eliminated,
maloperation is prevented by mechanical interlocking
and
the feeder is short-circuit-proof earthed by the threeposition disconnector in combination with the vacuum
circuit-breaker.
The single-pole enclosure of the primary conductor only
allows earth-fault arcing to occur between the conductor
and the earthed metal enclosure.
By subdividing the switchgear into different gas compartments, the effects of possibly occuring internal arc faults
are limited to the related gas compartment.

Standards
The switchgear conforms to the f ollowing standards (and
the previous versions respectively applicable at the time of
the type test):
General standards:
IEC 62271-1, IEC 62271-200
Standards for railway applications
EN 50124, EN 50152, EN 50163

Making and breaking performed by contacts inside the

vacuum interrupter
SF6 gas surrounding the interrupters insulates them
from the earthed pole enclosure (so the dielectric
properties of the SF6 are unaffected by make / break
operations)
Electrical service life dependent on breaking currents
(see diagrams)
Interrupter(s) operated by a (common) breaker shaft
from the operating mechanism housed in the front of
the panel
Normal opening time <60*ms by use of the first shunt
release
Total breaking time (at 50 Hz) <75* ms

Inductive cast-resin insulated voltage transformer can be

mounted on the busbar or on the panel connections

* other values on request

Toroidal-core current transformers

CLOSED: Contact blades connected with the busbars:

Main circuit closed between busbar and circuit-breaker
OPEN: Main circuit open between busbar and circuitbreaker: Test voltages for isolating distances are
withstood
READY-TO-EARTH: Contact blades connected with the
earthing contact of the busbar housing: Feeder earthed
and short-circuited by closing the circuit-breaker
Optional: Up to 10.000 operating cycles for disconnector
and earthing switch

Panel connections

Mounted outside the SF6 switchgear housings and

therefore safely accessible
Free of dielectrically stressed cast-resin parts

Fully-insulated panel connections available for

inside-cone plug-in system
Multiple connections possible per phase
Plug-in surge arresters can be connected
