(The 3rd World Conference)
Seismic Disaster Risk Reduction:
Enhancement of Seismic Performance of
Structure
Sanur-Bali, Indonesia
The
Sumatra
(Sunday-Boxing-Day
Earthquake 2004) is one example of the result
of tectonic plate movement activity. The
magnitude of the seismic was estimated to be
9.0 (Mw), and updated to Mw=9.3 {Arnaud:
2006, Seth: 2005-2007, Thorne: 2005} which
is twice the earlier prediction: estimated of
PGV = 200cm/sec, PGA approximately 1200
cm/sec2 for both the North-South and EastWest directions {Sorensen: 2007}.
A number of lessons have been learn from
the 2004 Sumatra Earthquake. The high
magnitude of earthquake had never been
predicted. Some structures designed for lower
seismic intensities were damaged or collapsed
as was the case for non-engineered structures.
To provide more resilient structures,
evaluations of structures under seismic
loading are required. The seismic disaster
effects are partly a legacy of countries
struggling in difficult economic situations
{Roberto: 2004}. Suggestions have been made
to improve building constructions under
earthquake risk; support must be provided by
all parties and government officers.
The conference will provide an
opportunity to share knowledge and
experiences related to the how reduces the
seismic disaster risk, enabling scientist and
engineer to provide action plans for
improving the seismic performance of the
structures.
