Sang Kancil and Sang Buaya : A

Poem
A Good Turn

Sang Kerbau, the good natured

buffalo
Was on his way to the river

The bewildered buffalo cried

What injustice is this?
When Sang Kancil happened to stroll
by
To witness the precarious scene

When he heard a crying below

Sang Kerbau begged the clever

mousedeer

From a giant croc almost in tears

To make Sang Buaya see reason

Adoi, adoi, my back is breaking

Oh, Sang Kerbau, please help me

This is a case, the buffalo

lamented
Of deep ungratefulness

Sang Kerbau, moved by the crocs

pleading

Sang Buaya gave his account

Forgot his treacherous tendencies

Kancil nodded in agreement

In this jungle, he pronounced

He went closer and saw

A huge tree trunk had trapped Sang
Buaya

One must take advantage of

situations.

With his strong tusk he heaved the

log

Just then a mengkuang food cover

floated by

Thus freed Sang Buaya from

unwanted burden

Sang Kancil called out to the

discarded tudung saji

In a quick turnabout the ungrateful

croc
Caught the bull by his leg
Dragged Sang Kerbau to a marshy
plot
Ready to devour his victim

Dear friend, youve traveled far and

wide
Should there be recompensation for
good deeds?

I know nought about deserving good

deeds
When I was new I served my master
I was the center of the family meal

Look at me now thrown away into

the river!

To prove you are right and Sang

Kerbau, wrong

There you have it, Sang Kerbau, my

friend!

No, no, no .thats not true!

I shall prove this to you

Do you still think justice wins at the

end of day?

He relaxed his mighty jaw

Here comes a frayed old pandan

mat

Sang Kerbau, show Kancil how it

was.

Let us hear what she has to say.

Sang Kerbau sadly lifted the trunk up
high
Alas, Sang Kancil, hear my
lamentation

Displaying his mighty strength

I was the centre in all ceremonies

And Kancil quickly cried

When I was tattered, I faced

demolition

Put it on Sang Buayas back again!

On this stream, I was left to perish.

You see, Kancil, I was right

The three were silent for awhile

He did free me, stupid though it

seemed

Sang Kerbau, tears running down his

cheeks
Sang Buaya, a greedy gleam in his
eyes
Sang Kancil thoughtful, stroking his
chin

Now I shall get my prize

After Sang Kerbau carries this off
me

No such thing, said Sang Kancil

Kerbau, you leave this trail, this
route

However, it seems ludicrous

No one is to help Sang Buaya until

To suggest that Sang Kerbau is that

strong

He learns all about gratitude

I believe Sang Buaya, you are

making this up

Buat baik berpada pada

Buat jahat jangan sekali
