1. Laura Whitehead was homeschooled, meaning she did not experience the
norms of a formal educational system. How did this affect her resistance or
conformity to peer pressure?
Answered by: Burgos
The homeschooling system significantly affects Laura Whiteheads way of thinking about
socializing and following the norms. She was indeed different from other children because in
formal education system, peer pressure is really evident wherein you should surrender
yourself in order to fit in. In Lauras case she knows how to socialize and talk to other people
yet in a different way, different from the norms established way of socialization. Yet Lauras
case being homeschooled and being different from other children help her more in resisting
and giving in into pressure and what she saw and experienced in the play area made her
became more courageous to stand for what she think is right and just though there is social
awkwardness because of her way of thinking from other children.
2. Did she resist peer pressure, or did she give in to it?
Answered by: Lopez
In the story she did not compromised her beliefs and values by just following the
norms that is happening around her because that is one of the things that she learned in her
homeschooling; but instead she courageously stands on her view of the importance of
following the rules and regulation. She even made herself as an example to the group of
children around her and made a covert mission, yet she missed the mark since everyone is
giving in to the pressure of disobeying because it is the norm around the place. Even though
majority of the childrens action are against the rules of the place, Laura still continued and play
according to the said regulations around the setting.
3. What does Laura mean when she says she was "socialized differently?"
Answered by: Nagrampa
As Laura said being socialized differently does not mean youre also a un-socialize or
people that cant even interact with other. She simply means that you are acting differently
from what was the norm is doing; or it can be socializing in your own manner and having an
identity different from others. Socialized differently only means you have a different view on
some matters that can or cannot understand by the people belongs to a majority of groups
under the peer pressure. To sum it all a person that socialized differently doesnt easily
persuade by the extrinsic factor around her because he or she has the ability to resist the
norm.
