Analysing Multi Camera Productions

Multi Camera productions have many different techniques in the

duration of filming them. Multi camera productions is a type of method
for television programmes, sports footage and films etc. There is
always more than one camera shooting so the footage can be swapped
to get a better shot.
Coverage of action is an extent or a degree to which something is
analysed or observed. Coverage of action doesnt just film all of the
action that the audience are watching it films the audience as well. This
is done in the coverage of concerts and public events. Concerts and
public events will always use coverage of action because the
audience are part of whats happening which is why they are filmed as
well. In coverage footage the action is all live which means the camera
cant take their eye or the action, one disadvantage of this multi
camera technique is say at a live sports event, some action may be
missed due to their being too much action happening at the sports
event. At the Olympics cameras were shot at the action and the
audience, all of the audience shots would have been displayed when
there is no action happening within in any Olympic arena. An example
of a concert that has all the same conventions as coverage of action is
H20 Music Concert which films
the audience and the main
acts on stage coverage a
range of different shots.

Coverage of actions towards game

shows and chat shows are similar to
how the filming is done at an
Olympics arena, this is because whenever someone on the panel talks
the camera will instantly be swapped them and when the audience
would laugh the camera would then swap to the audience and back to
the person on the panel speaking. So it meets all of the viewers on
television demands, the viewer always wants to see the best action
that it going on at the chat and game show. An example of a chat
show would be The Ellen Show which involves the people on stage
constantly chatting throughout the show conversing interesting facts

and gossip to the audience. An example of a game show is countdown

because it follows all of the correction conventions which coverage of
action has, which was to shoot not just the game show but the
audience.

There
is
special
camera that are used for the
audience and it is used to capture
the audience reactions. Communication meaning to the viewer is
trying to make the audience feel as though they are a part of what is
happening. The audience cant miss out anything important otherwise
they will change their thoughts on what they are watching.
Communicating meaning to the viewer in a live event such as concerts
and stage productions or even at festivals the audience always to see
the best part of action. An example of a sports live event where
communication to the viewer is used is the 2016 Final euro football
match between Portugal and France which led to Portugals win. In the
match the communication to the viewer was very good because the
interaction between the screen and the viewer is very good because
there
is a

commenter which narrates the whole match word by word. An

example of a public event where this has happened is the Olympics,
this is because the communication meaning to the viewer is very good
due to the interaction between the narrator and what is going on the
screen. Over the Olympics they would have made sure that every
event would have someone from each language narrating the event, so
the communication to the viewer is done well.
In studio productions communicating meaning to the viewer
anything can be shot again because it is not a live event it is in a

studio. So everything filmed and shown must be influenced to the

audience in a good way, because the audience are influenced by what
they see. For example, say if the screen was shot onto the presenters
face in shock the audience are instantly going to react in the same way.
For example, a studio production such as chat shows and games
shows both follow communication meaning to the viewer codes and
conventions. Both shows have audiences that are included in the show.
An example of a chat show is the Ellen Show which is has a presenter
and each show they do they have a different star that Ellen asks
questions about what they do and their lives. An example of a games
show is the Wheel of Fortune which follows all the same codes and
conventions that communicating meaning to the viewer.

Visual style is key for multi camera productions

because it is what the audience is viewing on a
programme, what the shots are and how they
change around. Having a good visual style would
be blending the shots together when they are
edited together. Visual style is used in every production it is essential,
such as at a live event such as Olympic Boxing and the football
World cup 2016 Final. Both of these two live events are follow the
same conventions as visual style but so does the majority of live
events that are airing on television because the audience watching
television always want to see the best part of whats happening, which
is depending on how developed the visual style skills are when
switching shots at a live event.

For studio productions all of them will focus on the visual style because
the producers want the audience to get the best possible aspect and
view of what is happening. A good example of a chat show where this
takes place is The Graham Norton Show, which follows all the
correct conventions of visual style to the top standard. Another
example of a studio production is Friends because they constantly
want to show the viewing audience through the television the best
perspective of the show and show them the most interesting thing that

is going happening. This is a good example

because it follows step by step what visual
style is and what is representing. Its not
just friends that have immaculate visual
style there are other studio productions
such as How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang
Theory and Baby Daddy. All of these
productions follow the visual style
conventions because that is
the best way to show it to the
audience.
Mainting Viewer Interest
consists of making sure tha the
audience get the best point of
view of the show, which is why
they use multiple amounts of cameras to shoot
productions and at live events. The reson for using multiple cameras is
because then each camera can be asigned to shot one specific place
such as a comedian, there would be a shot on him and a shot with a
different camera on to each panel resulting in using multiple amount of
cameras around the set or at a live event. So when the comedian talks
the camra would switch to him or her, and when someone in on either
of the panels talks it will go onto them. There would also be a
establsihing shot of the the wholoe set to give the audience a better
viewer. This is all done to give the audience the best possible viewing.
There would be a separate camera for each camera

An example of a live event where maintaning viewer interest is the

majority of all events where it has been filmed such as any football
match such at Manchester United vs Manchester City, in football
matches it is obvious they spend lots of money on the quality of all the
cameras and the equipment there as you
can see on the right all the

camera man next to the pitch

and the size of the cameras. These football matches have a camera
that gets a shot over the top which is used by a controller and it flies
over the pitch to get a good establishing shot of them. This is all done
for the maintaining viewer interest, there is a control box where
someone choses between which shot shold be shown for people
watching televsions so they ca get the best possible aspect of what is
happening.

Another example of a live event where maintaining interest to the

viewer is used is anything that is filmed, so the Ashes cricket
England v Australia which follows all the
correct codes and conventions which is
making sure the audience can see the best
parts on what happening in the cricket. For
studio productions all the codes and
convetions will be the same but since
these studio productions such as How I met Your Mother and The
Big Bang Theory are displayed as episodes and can be watched
through the internet or on tv, there is more effort being put into the
mainting viewer interest. By this I mean the shots will be more
concerntrated on and will be better aimed towards the viewer.
Constrights of Studio or location enviroment have a big impact on the
show or a live event, having the correct location is key and can create
good effects. A game show for example Celebrity Juice will have a
varety of cameras asigned for each thing on a game show, doing this
means they can change between cameras to create a smooth
transition between the shots. Another example ofa studio production is
The ellen show which is a chat show, the location for this chat show

always stays the same in a studio. All the same codes and conventions
are used as Celebrity Juice.
A live event has a more focused enviroment
due to it not being in a studio and having to
think more about
the location. But a
simple example of
this would be a Rugby Match such as the
Six Nations 2015 final because they play
in a stadium which is an enviroment full of
camers to record every last bit that goes
on in the game. Another example of a live
event where constraights of studio or location
enviroment is applied is Wimbledon at every
match there because of it is filmed and has
cameras watching every aspect of the game.

Multi camera
simultaneous recording
is using more than
camera at a time, that
is filming at the same
time as another
camera. Multiple amounts of camera can be used there is no limit, an
example of a live event where there is cameras constantly being used
is again Wimbledon because it is a very good example of multi
camera recording because at Wimbledon they will hasve one camera
focused on each player, one camera for an establishing shot, another
camera on the audience posibly more depending on which pitch you
are on at Wimbledon, also cameras on the ball boys and the umpire.
Multi camera is very important for any live event because you cant film
everything on one camera it wouold be impossible. The editing of the
cameras and how they switch is simple there is someone choosing
which ones to have on a each time becuas the audience want to always
be seeing the most important thing that is going on. Another example
of a live event where all of these codes and conventions of multi
camera is used is Wireless Music Festival, all the cameras there will
be asigned to their own job which one would be on the audience and
the other would be aimed towards the stage and the artist that is
singing.
For studio productions where multi camera has been used is pretty
much the majority of every indoor studio productions, two productions

that follow the multi camera codes and conventions is Baby Daddy
and Friends. They use more than one camera because there is a lot to
follow on the screen which is why they essentially need to use more
than one camera.
