Kennedy Plaza Elevator Platform Extension Load Criteria

Elevator Structure Basis of Design

Date: December 3, 2012

General
The City of Tampa has requested HDR to provide Elevator Structure Basis of Design information for a future
elevator to be located in the City of Tampa Riverwalk project, near the Kennedy Blvd Bridge. The work contained
herein will aide the Citys structural engineering consultant to design the required foundation systems to
accommodate the loads. Once the foundation / support system have been designed, the Riverwalk extension
can be modified to accommodate this design.

Deliverables
The following is a list of information provided as part of this work:
Basis of Design narrative
Kone elevator generic specifications
Kone EcoSpace Planning Guide
Structural load plan
Structural reactions table
Figures
o 1.1 concept plan
o 1.2 concept section

The Basis of Design ( BoD ) narrative has been developed to allow a high level understanding of the criteria
upon which the structural loading calculations will be based. The intent of this document is not to design and/
or specify an elevator product or manufacturer. The intent of the BoD , through conversations with the City and
its consultants, is to conceptualize the function of the elevator, select a product which will accommodate this
function and to be able to use that selection to prepare structure design loading.
This design loading will then be used by others to develop an appropriate subsurface structural system capable
of withstanding the imposed loads.
Ultimately the final selection of the elevator and equipment may be different from what has been used as the
BoD herein. At such time, the newly selected equipment can be compared to what has been used as the basis
of design and appropriate alterations to the construction foundation / pit system can be made.

Exclusions
This basis of design is intended to develop load criteria for the elevator shaft and surround. This document will
not address the adjacent Riverwalk construction and / or its integration with or without the elevator shaft basis
of design.
This basis of design does not address the integration of the bridge at the plaza level other than explicitly noted
herein.

Basis of Design Narrative

The following elevator information has been used to develop the loading criteria. Where possible, proprietary
information has been omitted to allow for opportunities of other manufacturers. However, in some instances
specific product information has been used to facilitate magnitude loading information.
Elevator manufacturer:

Kone

Elevator type:

2 stop, machine-room less, gearless, traction, passenger elevator

with front and reverse opening. Stretcher capable

Elevator capacity:

3,500 lbs

Elevator cab and hoist way sizes:

Cab size:

6-8 wide
5-7 deep
9 foot car height

Hoist way plan dimensions: ( inside dimensions )

8-6 wide
7-6 deep
Hoist way section dimensions:

Entrance height = 8
Minimum Overhead height= 14-1,
Pit depth= 5-0*
Partial section of pit to be dedicated to a sum pump. This require a plan area of
approx 24 x 24 and an additional depth of 24 in that area.

Elevator Miscellaneous:
Remote Control Closet
This type of elevator equipment requires a Remote Control Closet. The basis of design for this project
assumes this closet can be located elsewhere but in the general vicinity of the elevator hoist way. The
general accepted distance is 150. The proposed location for this closet is the existing mechanical room
located in the garage under the Malios plaza. The general size of this closet is 24 deep x 60 wide and
includes a 36 doorway.
Finishes
Finishes add to the overall weight of the elevator. As such , the loading criteria include heavier
materials for loading calculation purposes including:
Ceramic tile flooring ( 14lbs/sqft) = approx. 560lbs
Solid surface wall cladding ( 6.6lbs /sqft ) = approx. 1,500 lbs
Stainless steel ceiling ( similar to Kone LF-88 system)
Signalization
Signalization has not been considered in developing the load criteria
Other Miscellaneous:
Location
The location of the elevator hoist way center point will be a distance away from the existing sea wall of
the garage. Refer to figure 1.1 of this document. Therefore, a bridge element will provide access from
the second stop at the Plaza level. The loads imposed by the bridge element have been included in

these calculations. The bridge has not been conceptualized to be structurally attached to the sea wall
or second level plaza other than functional, pedestrian transitions.
Water
In discussions with Moffatt and Nichol, water affects have not been included on the elevator shaft
above the Riverwalk elevation
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing
Considerations of these systems have not been included in the document except as explicitly
expressed.
Hoist way screen enclosure
In addition to the load of the elevator and hoist way are loads imposed by the perforated screen
enclosure. For the purposes of this document, the perforated screen material basis of design is
Hendricks Architectural Products
18 gage stainless steel
1 diameter holes on 1 3/8 centers
staggered.
Approximately 2.016 lbs/ sqft / 2 = approx 1lb/sqft
Approximately 47% open air
This screen will be structurally anchored back to the hoist way shaft.
The roof of the screen enclosure will consist of lightweight framing, solid and not allowing water to
pass.
The basic geometry of the screen enclosure is a tapered oval. Refer to figures 1.1/ 1.2
