Korean Drama

We live in an age when, to quote Jack Nicholson, acting is everybodys favourite second job.
Acting and drama have been an integral part of the entertainment industriy since time
immemorial. Every country with its own unique culture and tradition evolves its own version
of theatre and drama. So it was with Korea, one of the rising nations of the modern age in
terms of entertainment.
Korean drama has its origins in prehistoric religious rites, while music and dance play
an integral role in all traditional theatrical performances. In recent itmes, Korean dramas and
entertainment have gained popularity particularly among the youth. There are several
reasons for this. I, personally, prefer traditional Korean drama to modern drama. The vibrant
costumes and elaborate background sets are encaptivating. The music and drumbeats
intensify the mysterious element of the acts and the talented actors bring the story to life.
Moden K-Drama is also extremely popular in many Asian as well as European countries.
Where traditional historical series tend to be long and detailed, contemporary K-drama is
often in the form of miniseries. The historical element, including wars, concentrating on
kings, famous military leaders or political events, is what gives the intrigue to the traditional
drama. The contemporary drama is made interesting because of their modern plots and
idealistic characters. Because most of these dramas are written separately by one writer and
directed by a single director, they often have a distinct directing style and language. Each
writers different ideas and each directors separate perception give rise to several subgenres genres within contemporary K-Drama. That is one more thing to love about this
rapidly growing genre of drama. Historical backgrounds are often combined with modern
drama, occasionally mixing the plot with fantasy, romance, action or science fiction,
attracting younger generations. Another reason why I like K-Drama is because it portrays
moral values such as respect for elders and faily orientedness. The balance of modernism
and traditionalism created in these dramas is also appealing to both the young and the old.
Moreover, feminist values and ideas in many K-Drama series, as in I do I do is a key
element that creates interest and has high relevance in the modern world.
All these reasons make Korean Drama an excellent source of entertainment for people of all
ages. There are sub-genres within this genre of drama to interest everyone. The plots are
usually relatable, the actors convincing and the costumes in traditional drama beautifully
elaborate. The Korean Wave has affected many countries in Asia, India being one of them
and has popularized the countrys rich culture among other countries of the world as well.
With a fresh and bold new approach, K-Drama has captured the interests of several people
and has united fans from different nationalities in a single fan base; and that is what I love
most about it.
