The National University

History
Barely 23 years old, Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson envisioned the youth as
a leader: competent, imbued with moral and spiritual values, internalizing all that is
good in the Filipino. Guided by this vision, he founded Colegio Filipino on August 01,
1900, in Quiapo, Manila. In 5 years, he offered courses in Business (bookkeeping
and accounting), so that his students would be financially stable after graduation.
This led to a change of name of the school to Colegio mercantile, awarding the
diploma of Perito Mercantil. Later, the Philippine Law School was established to
train the youth as responsible leaders advocating Philippine self-government.
In 1916, Colegio Mercantil was renamed National Academy, offering the
Liberal Arts program which became the gateway to other disciplines.
On January 17, 1921, the Board of Trustees obtained permission from the
Department of Public Instruction to change the name of the National Academy to
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY. On that same day, the University installed Senator Camilo
Osias, a respected and outstanding Filipino educator as President.
Thereafter, the Colleges of Education and Commerce were opened in the
same year, the Colleges of Pharmacy and Dentistry in 1922, the College of
Engineering, offering initially Civil Engineering in 1925, the Normal School in 1930,
and Sanitary Engineering in 1930.
From July, 1945 its facilities have since continuously expanded and the
following disciplines were added Bachelor degrees in Chemical, Electrical,
Industrial, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture and Arts, and Master in Sanitary
Engineering.
Responding to the needs of industry, the University started offering Computer
Science in 1990, and in 1994 Computer Engineering and Electronics and
Communications Engineering. Nursing was offered in 2004, Hotel and Restaurant
Management in 2008 and Information Technology in 2009.
On January 01, 1998, a disastrous fire razed four buildings of the University.
After three weeks of unrelenting restoration work, operations resumed.
In 2008, the SM Group of Companies acquired majority ownership of National
University. The support of the SM Group has strengthened the institution with new
infrastructure, improved laboratories, and academic improvements. Today, the
University is continuously modernizing and upgrading its faculty, facilities and sports
development.

In March 2010, TUV Rheinland granted the University an ISO 9001:2008

Certification. Likewise, the University is also working for the accreditation of its
academic programs by the (Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges
and Universities) PAASCU.
National University is a founding member of the University Athletic
Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and a pioneer of the Philippine Association of
Colleges and Universities (PACU). Its international affiliations and memberships
include the Association of Southeast Asia Higher Institutions of Learning (ASAHIL)
and the International Association of Universities (IAU).
Vision
National University, characterized by its cultural heritage of Dynamic
Filipinism, envisions itself as a leading educational institution committed to nation
building.
Mission
National University provides relevant, innovative, and accessible quality
education and other development programs to:
a. Its students, by developing them into moral, spiritual, and responsible citizens
b. Its employees, by enhancing their competencies and providing them a
rewarding work environment
c. Its alumni, by cultivating in them a sense of pride and commitment to their
alma mater
d. Its community, by contributing to the uplift of various aspects of life of its
members
e. Its industry partners and employers by providing them with graduates who will
contribute to their growth and development.

The College of Engineering

History
The College of Engineering has a long and proud tradition, having been a vital
part of National University since 1925 when it admitted its first students in Civil
Engineering.
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BS CE) Program was soon
followed by the baccalaureate program in Sanitary Engineering. And in 1945, four
more were added to the list of undergraduate degree offerings, namely: Chemical
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical
Engineering. In this same year, the Master of Science in Sanitary Engineering was
instituted.
The latest additions to this growing list of programs being offered by the
College are the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BS CoE) and the
Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering (BS ECE),
which were both opened in 1994.
Today, the College consists of six disciplines: Civil Engineering, Computer
Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Environmental and Sanitary Engineering. The College
offers BS Programs in these six disciplines and a Masters degree in Sanitary
Engineering.
Enrollment in the last 5 years has grown substantially and the number of
graduates has likewise increased. This is attributed to the renewed administrative
support, particularly in terms of improved facilities, and the entry of more qualified
faculty members.
Vision
The National University College of Engineering shall be known for producing
competent, ethical and responsible engineers responsive to the needs and
aspirations of the country.

discipline.
2. Adopting teaching techniques that will stimulate the creativity and develop
the analytical skills of students.
3. Enhancing classroom instruction by providing appropriate industry and
research experiences.
4. Laying the foundation for continuous life-long learning.
5. Ensuring the adequate exposure of students to the humanities and the social
sciences and providing them with opportunities for community involvement in
order to instill in them a deep understanding of societal needs and how
engineering can contribute to their satisfaction.
Program Outcomes
At the time of graduation, students have:
1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, sciences, and engineering
sciences to the practice of engineering.

I. The Industry Internship Training Program

A. Introduction
Five of the undergraduate programs of the College of Engineering require
industry internship training, as part of the curriculum. This is normally scheduled
during the summer term, before the start of the students fifth year in the University.
The Engineering programs requiring OJT are BS Electrical Engineering, BS
Electronics and Communications Engineering, BS Computer Engineering, BS
Mechanical Engineering and BS Civil Engineering.
The subject carries a 3-unit credit, which is equivalent to at least 200 hours of
student affiliation with a firm or organization appropriate to the students engineering
field of study.
B. Objectives
The objective of Industry Internship Training Program is to supplement the
lectures on engineering theory and laboratory exercises which the University amply
provides. It gives the student exposure to the working environment in an
engineering establishment and the opportunity to do hands-on assignments under
the supervision of experienced engineers.
The training program aims to:
a. provide students the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge, skills, and
desirable attitudes and values in reputable establishments/industries;
b. enhance the students work competencies, and discipline as they relate to
people in the workplace;
c. promote competitiveness of students through their training;
d. provide opportunities
professionals;

to

learn

from

and

network

with

experienced

e. handle new challenges and complex tasks or problems; and

f. identify future career directions.
On the part of the engineering firms, they stand to benefit from the program in
that they can better assess the capabilities of potential employees.
The College of Engineering can use the training program to enrich the degree
programs it offers. It also provides an opportunity for the University to strengthen its
relationship with its industry partners and affiliates.

engineering company whose line of work is fitted to the students
program. A letter, signed by the Dean, requesting for the placement of
particular students in the company for internship, shall be addressed to
the Company President or his/her representative. (See APPENDIX II).

He/She discusses with the companys designated representative the

training envisioned for the student, the training plan and the evaluation
of the trainee. He/She should provide the company representative with
a copy of the Performance Evaluation Report form (See APPENDIX

He/She gives the student a briefing before the start of the training,
explains the performance criteria and the requirement for submission of
a report at the end of the training. He/She monitors the progress of the
students training through regular discussions with the company staff
responsible for the students training.

He/She gives the student the grade in the course, taking into
consideration the companys rating of the student and his own
assessment of the students performance.

He/She sends the company head a letter, signed by the Dean,
