THE LARGEST TEMPLE IN BALI

Besakih is the biggest temple in Bali and the Balinese people called it Pura Besakih. The people
also know Besakih as the mother temple in Bali. Besakih temple consists of 18 temples and 1
central temple. This temple is located in Besakih countryside, Rendang sub district, Karangasem
regency, east part of the Bali Island. It is located in southwest side bevel of mount agung, the
biggest mount in Bali which has so many mystic stories about the spirit (arwah) and God. So
thats correct if Besakih temple is the famous temple in Bali.
Besakih temple comes from very old era. Its evidence with too much residual megalitik era,
such as menhir, the throne of stone, terrace structure of pyramid that found in the temples
complex which had been indicated that it had to be sanctified place. So, in this case we can say
that besakih comes from the era before the existence of Hinduism. The Besakihs name is come
from the word of Basuki, the old language from Sanskrit Wasuki, and then it becomes the Ancient
Java Language. In this Sanskrit, the Basuki means congratulation. In mythology of
Samudramanthana has mentioned that Basuki is the dragon that twines theMount Mandara.
Besakih temple complex was built based on the balance of nature in the concept of Tri Hita
Karana, which the regulation adjusted based on the wind direction so that the building structure
can be represented as the nature balance of the symbolism. The building structures based on the
concept of wind direction are:
1. Pura Agung Besakih upgrading as the central theater in the east direction and is the largest
temple of the temple, which is intended to glorify God Ciwa.
2. Pura Dark or Dark temple in east direction to gorify God Icwara.
3. Pura Kiduling Kreteg on the way south to glorify God Brahma.
4. Pura Ulun KulKul direction on the west to glorify God Mahadewa.
5. Pura Batumadeg on the north to gorify God Wisnu.
In generally Pura or called temple is the term of places of worship in Hindu in Indonesia. So the
function of Besakih temple in general is for the people who are Hinduism to pray to God and ask
for the safety. Beside that the Hindus organization or PHDI said that Besakih has five main
function, those are:
Besakih as huluning Bali Rajya or Bali upper regions.
Besakih temple as the Rwa Bhineda.
Besakih temple as Sad Winayaka Temple.
Besakih temple as a Padma Bhuwana temple.

 Besakih temple as a symbol of the bottom world and the upper world.
In Besakih temple, there are 18 temples around Besakih temple and one temple located in Sebudi
village. Beside that, in Besakih there also many temples that called Pedharman which is a temple
for Hinduism pray to their ancestor. The 18 temples and the location are:
1. Pura Penataran Agung Besakih, it is in the middle of every temple in Besakih.
2. Pura Persimpangan, its located in the Kedungdung village, in the middle of the field about
1.5 km the Pura Penataran Agung.
3. Pura Dalem Puri, its located approximately 1 km in the south west of Pura Penataran Agung.
4. Pura Manik Mas, its about 750 meters in the south of Pura Penataran Agung.
5. Pura Bangun Sakti, its located in the right side of the Pura Penataran Agung and in the north
side of Pura Manik Mas.
6. Pura Ulun Kulkul, its on the left side of the pura Penataran Agung.
7. Pura Mrajan Selonding, it is on the left side of Pura Penataran Agung consist of five building.
8. Pura Gowa, it is in front of Pura Merajan Selonding.
9. Pura Banuwa, it is about 50 meters from Pura Penataran Agung.
10. Pura Merajan Kanginan, it is on the east of Pura Banuwa.
11. Pura Hyang Aluh, it is on the west side of the Pura Penataran Agung and it s about 500
meters.
12. Pura Basukihan, it is on the right side of the Pura Penataran Agung stairs.
13. Pura Batu Madeg, it is about 150 meters on the right side of Pura Penataran Agung.
14. Pura Kiduling Kreteg, it is on the left side of Pura Penataran Agung and its about 300
meters.
15. Pura Gelap, it is on the hill and its about 600 meters from Pura Penataran Agung.
16. Pura Peninjauan, it is located on the right side of Pura Penataran Agung and about 1 km.
17. Pura Pengubengan, its located 1.5 km on the north of Pura Penataran Agung.

18. Pura Tirta, its located on the northeast of Pura Pengubengan.

19. Pura Pasar Agung, it is located on the bevel ofmount agung.
Bali has a big temple in the world that consists of many temples around there. All people said that
Besakih is the mother temple in Bali. Its located on the bevel of mount agung. The name of
Besakih is come from the word Basuki. There are many people come every ceremony, to pray to
God and ask for the safety.
