This profile for the year 2015 was generated


using data from a sample of 1,500 businesses
with a response rate of 87.2 per cent. The results
show the core indicators on the use of ICT by
businesses. Comparisons are between 2014 and
2015.

The ICT sector contributed 3.6 per cent or $213


million to GDP in 2015 (Figure 1).
Capital investment in ICT increased by 35.2 per
cent from $88 million in 2014 to $119 million in
2015 (Figure 2). This growth was comprised of
a $39.9 million increase in the purchase of IT
equipment and an $8.5 million reduction in the
purchase of computer software.

The
Information

Communication
Technologies (ICT) sector comprises a
combination of manufacturing and services
industries that enable or fulfill the function of
information processing and communication,
including transmission and display by electronic
means. These industries are involved in the
development, delivery and support of advanced
technological products.

(Figure 3).

In 2015, 93.0 per cent of businesses surveyed


reported using computers for business
operations, up 4.8 per cent over 2014 (Figure 5).

Nearly 7 out of every 10 (68.7 per cent)


companies indicated the use of wifi-enabled
devices to conduct business, with smartphones
being the most widely used device (Figure 5).
The number of businesses that placed orders via
the internet increase by 2.4 percentage points to
9.1 per cent. Business that received orders via
the internet increased by 8.6 percentage points to
38.8 per cent (Figure 6).

Approximately sixty-one per cent (60.5 per cent)


of companies used an internal network during
2015. The most commonly used network was a
Local Area Network (LAN) at 39.2 per cent
while 37.1 per cent of companies used a private
internal network (intranet).

The leading uses of the internet by businesses


were sending or receiving e-mails, getting
information from government and about good
and services, and interacting with government
(Figure 7).

The number of businesses that used the internet


to recruit staff grew by 18.5 percentage points to
46.1 per cent. Staff training via the internet grew
12.1 percentage points to 45.5 per cent. (Figure
8).
The number of businesses that provided
customer service using the internet increased by
8.7 percentage points to 53.7 per cent in 2015
(Figure 8).

Trade in ICT Goods and Services

Bermudas ICT trade deficit increased by 3.4 per


cent or $2.0 million in 2015 (Figure 9).
The wider deficit reflected an increase in imports
of ICT services of 10.8 per cent or $7.9 million
which was slightly offset by an increase in
exports of 4.2 per cent or $2.7 million.

The value of ICT goods imported decreased by


$3.2 million in 2015, particularly x-ray
apparatus, electro-diagnostic apparatus and
magnetic resonance imaging apparatus.

Outsourcing of ICT by Businesses

The majority of companies surveyed (58.0 per


cent) did not outsource their ICT needs in
2015. Almost a third of companies (32.2 per
cent) outsourced their ICT needs to other local
companies and one in every 10 companies (9.8
per cent) outsourced their ICT needs overseas
(Figure 11).

Gross Median Annual Income for ICT-Related


Jobs

The gross median annual income for ICTrelated jobs increased 0.8 per cent to $76,247
in 2015. This ranked above the economy-wide
gross median annual income of $63,657.

The rise in gross median annual income for


Electrical and Electronic Engineers was due to
the addition of 7 extra positions in that
occupational category (Figure 12).
