Candidates should attempt all questions briefly. Please provide complete

answers. Clarity and organization of the answer is important.
1. Solve the following problems.
(a) In the absence of body forces, show that the following stresses satisfy the
plane strain stress formulation relations.
x kxy, y kx,
z vkx[1 y ]

(b) Show that for the case of plane stress, in the absence of body forces, the
equations of equilibrium may be expressed in terms of displacements u
and v as follows:
2u 2u 1 v u v

0
x 2 y 2 1 v x x y

xy ky 2 , xz yz 0, k constant

2 v 2 v 1 v u v

0
x 2 y 2 1 v y x y

2. A simply supported disk (length L, height h, thickness t) is subjected to a

constant load q per unit length as shown Fig.1-l. we consider the following
power series assumption for the Airy stress function:

Axy Bx 2 Cy 3 Dx 2 y Ex 2 y 3 Fy 5
Where: A, B, C , D, E and F are constants. Determine:
(a) The requirement on the constants so that the proposed Airy stress function
solves the problem given.
(b) Determine the stresses in the disk from the stress function.
(c) Check that the equilibrium at large is fulfilled.
(d) Calculate the displacement distribution of the disk.

3. Show that the stress function given below solves the problem of the linearly
increasing vertical loading on a semi-infinite strip indicated in Fig.1-2., the
linearly increasing pressure load extending indefinitely to the left.

4. Show how the distribution of stresses due to embankment load indicated in Fig.1.3
may be obtained by superposition from the loading of type indicated in Fig 1.2.

5. Assuming a 5-m-high highway embankment is to be constructed like the

geometry shown in Fig. 1.3. If the unit weight of compacted embankment (fill)
soil is 18.5 kN/m3, calculate the vertical stress due solely to the embankment
at the following points in
space: A(3 m, 2.5 m) and B(0 m, 2.5 m) using
1 4m and 2 10m.
