PRIMARY CURRICULUM OVERVIEW


Maths: Securing Number
Year 4

In our final term children will be focusing on


letters as well as play scripts. Firstly,
children will be reading various play scripts
and looking at the lay out and key features
of particular play scripts. This genre will
involve drama and role play as well as
rewriting scenes from play scripts. In the
last part of the half term children will be
learning about letter writing. They will be
exploring formal and informal letters and
looking closely at the key features of these.
Children will be writing for a purpose as they
will be writing a persuasive letter to the
school asking for a redesign of the
playground and track by the school car park.
Things you can do at home with your
child:
- Practise using commas to mark clauses.
-Explore a range of connectives including
time connectives to signal cause/reason (e.g.
because, so).

PE: Volleyball
In PE children will be playing Volleyball and
undertaking modified games the key skills
that they will be learning are:
- Volley and dig.
- Underarm serve over the net.
- Pair work of volley, serve and dig.
- Rules of the game.

Calculating

Science: Circuits and


Conductors
Our children will continue to plan,
complete and evaluate various
investigations. However this half term
our focus is circuits and conductors.
Children will be constructing simple
circuits, draw them, find which
materials are the best electrical
conductors and use this information to
make switches. Children will wire plugs
and find what happens to a bulbs
brightness when circuits are changed.

Humanities/Art/Topic:
Deadly Disasters
We will continue to explore deadly
disasters looking closely at tsunamis
and sandstorms. Children will learn
about the features of these natural
disasters, where they occur and the
effect they have on their surroundings.
In Art we will be exploring the work of
Katsushika Hokusai. Use the website

Things you can do at home with
your child:

The focuses of this unit are solving one- and


two-step word problems involving numbers,
money or measures, representing a problem,
interpreting the solution to the problem,
interpreting the language of ratio and
proportion, using a calculator. Children will be
learning to derive and recall multiplication
facts up to 10 10, the corresponding
division facts and multiples of numbers to 10
up to the tenth multiple. Develop and use
written methods to record, support and
explain multiplication and division of two-digit
numbers by a one-digit number, including
division with remainders (e.g.15 9, 98 6).
Recognise the equivalence between decimal
and fraction forms of one half, quarters,
tenths and hundredths. Furthermore children
will represent a puzzle or problem using
number sentences, statements or diagrams;

Computer Studies:
Algorithms and E- Safety
Children will be learning how to solve and improve
algorithms as well as how to stay safe online.

Read about e-safety.

Music
Children will be learning all about the
instruments of the orchestra, looking
closely at the brass, string, wood wind
and percussion family.
