Snake season is well upon us. Each year,

Newman News has written advice about
what to do if you see a snake and how to
diminish their likely presence in your yard.
If a snake is sighted, stay still and let them
pass if possible, otherwise move straight
out of the area. Call a snake handler,
and keep an eye from a safe distance for
where the snake may have gone so the
handler has a chance of finding it. A few
preventative measures include keeping
lawns and vegetation trimmed, pick up
outdoor toys, keep rodents and other
potential food sources at bay, and consider
better solutions for wood piles and the
like. Other bite prevention actions include
wearing enclosed shoes outside and
turning on lights before stepping out in the
dark. Do not attempt to handle the snake
yourself as snake markings are sometimes
very similar between venomous and nonvenomous kinds, even enough to cause
debate amongst those trained.
Snake handlers for rescue and relocation
include (speed dial on your phone?):

Rabbit Proof Fence

Lindsey Cole from Buckinghamshire, who

is a cycling adventurist, a former medical
charity worker, and journalism graduate,
walked 2,400 km of the Rabbit Proof Fence
taking about 10 weeks. The rabbit proof
fence was originally designed to stem
the flow of the destructive rabbit plague
into crops and pastoral lands in WA. The
fence was made infamous by the struggle
of three young Aboriginal girls trying to
return to their Jigalong home in 1931 after
running away from the Moore River Native
Settlement, North of Perth, whilst being
pursued. Lindseys journey, in honour of
the three girls, undertook the journey
facing the harsh conditions and extreme
weather. She remarked that she had plenty
of survival gear while the girls were dressed
only in their nighties. The message she gave
was to show motivation and determination
in order to achieve and to succeed.

JPs Volunteering

Newman has several very dedicated JPs

who make themselves available. Justices of
the Peace are volunteers, they may preside
in a Magistrate court, sign search warrants
for the Police, authorise the issuing of
summons for Police, preside in a prison
court, assess and approve bail and surety
applications, and are frequently called
upon to witness documents. As volunteers,
please make an appointment with them in
advance.

Birdy Nutrition: Plating up for our feathered friends

By Dr Lucy van der Weide, BScBVMS Newman Veterinary Hospital

When it comes to pet bird nutrition there

is a lot of misleading and inaccurate
information available. The importance of
a balanced diet for our pet birds is critical.
Did you know that the standard seed
mixture you buy at your local pet store or
supermarket could be making your bird
sick?
Seed mixtures are an incomplete food
source and are nutritionally unbalanced.
Seed is too high in fat and carbohydrate,
whilst being low in vitamins and minerals.
A diet consisting predominately of seed
is just like a diet of fried chips for us. Not
good.
It is not natural to feed birds a seed based
diet and doing so will result in severe
nutritional deficiencies and a shorter
lifespan. These birds become highly
susceptible to many diseases. A common

disease we see in vet practice is fatty liver

syndrome known as lipidosis. This is a
serious condition that can result in death if
treatment is not started early.
The best diet for pet birds is a high quality
pelleted diet (approximately 50-75%
formulated for the species of bird you have
(finches, lorikeets, small and large parrots
etc.) with the remaining diet made up with
a selection of vegetables, fruit and fresh
forage and grasses offered daily. Avoid
avocado, garlic, onion and rhubarb. Allow
only 1-2% of the diet for treats and training.
Examples of what can be used include the
bird seed, unsalted nuts, pasta, eggs and
brown rice.
Converting your pet bird over to a balanced
pellet from a seed diet takes time and
patience. It can take weeks before your
pet bird willingly eats the pellets. For

more information, pop into the Newman

Veterinary Hospital and grab a free fact
sheet.
Briefly; for our pet chooks, ensure they
have available at all times a commercial
high quality pellet (starter, layer, breeder
etc.) It is important the pellets do not get
wet as it can become highly toxic. Kitchen
scraps alone are not a sufficient diet for
laying, young or growing hens. For hens
ranging on lush grass, care should be
taken to ensure that they still eat their
laying pellets as they will not get enough
nutrients from the grass alone.
For more information or to purchase a
balanced bird pellet please contact the
Newman Vet Hospital. Stay tuned for next
months nutrition tips for our small, furry
pet mammals including ferrets, guinea
pigs, rabbits, mice and rats.

Community Cleans Up
As mentioned in the previous edition
of Newman News, the Great Northern
Clean Up is the above the Tropic of
Capricorns version of Clean Up Australia
Day scheduled around more suitable
weather. The day is intended to empower
communities to clean up, fix up and
conserve our [their] environment.
Almost 40 community members, a large
contingent being the Newman Scouts,
gathered to clean up around Radio Hill in
an event organised by the Shire of East
Pilbara.
The Shire kept volunteers hydrated while
collecting two ute-loads of rubbish.
Newman is a 2016 state finalist in the Keep
Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Sustainable
Communities campaign, in the categories
of Environmental Sustainability, Young
Legends and Environmental Education. The
fact that the majority of volunteers at the
clean-up were children and youth from the
Newman Scout Group demonstrates why
our community is a contender in the Young
Legends category, reports the Shire.
Volunteers were rewarded at the end with
a BBQ at the Newman Visitor Centre and
ice creams provided by Ole Grandads Ice
creams. Thanks to everyone involved.

NCCI Directory Launch

By Tania Tucker, NCCI

Newman Chamber of Commerce and

Industrys August Business After Hours
saw the launch of the 2016/2017 Newman
Community and Business Directory. Rising
to the challenge to meet with the high
expectations of last years publication,
was without a doubt a very hard task. This
years directory is even bigger and better
with a print run of 10,000 copies. Many
thanks must go to all our local businesses
that advertised, to our local photographers
for their contribution of lovely images.
Thanks also to Helen Medlen, Treasurer
NCCI, of Mt. Newman Furniture and
Bedding without whose hard work and
dedication this directory would not have
come to fruition. Anyone who has not
received a copy of the directory is welcome
to collect one from Newman House at 15
Iron Ore Parade.

Paralympian:
Russell (Rusty) Boaden
By Nicole Willis

Paralympian, Russell (Rusty) Boaden, was

not only the first child delivered in Newman,
arriving 15 December 1969, when it was
a closed mining town but he is also a
Paralympian. Rusty damaged his Brachial
Plexus in a motorbike accident in his 20's
and discovered sailing at 32. He began as a
trainer before joining the crew and began
his representation of Australia in the 2006
IFDS World Championship. Since joining
the sailing world, Rusty has won many titles
but none more so rewarding to him than
bronze at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics in
the mixed three person sonar with fellow
crew members; Jonathan Harris and Colin
Harrison. This Paralympics, the trio went
on to win gold in Rio, with three first and
four second placings. On behalf of the
Newman News, we congratulate this threeman squad on brining home the gold and
wish them well in their future endeavours.

Wild dog baiting

An aerial baiting program for wild dog
control is being implemented by pastoralists
on their leases. Wild dogs cause problems
for livestock and the baits are extremely
toxic. The bait used has many advantages
over other types including the fact that
native species are said to not be affected
by it, making it more target specific.
In addition, the water solubility of this type
of bait means that the toxin is eventually
leached out of uneaten baits by rain,
reducing any lasting potential hazard posed
by those baits. It is also broken down into
harmless by-products by micro-organisms,
eliminating any potential for long-term
environmental contamination.

Baits may look like these, similar to dried meat

Pet dogs are at extreme risk. Some baits

look like dried meat and tempting to our
pet dogs. It is best to leave them safely at
home until after heavy rains.
These leases are private property but
contain many beautiful spots that Newman
residents and visitors use for leisure. These
may include Wunna Munna, Weeli Wolli
and Kalgans Pool to name just a few. We
are reminded that it is required to contact
pastoralists before going on their property,
which normally is just a phone call in
advance. Contact details can be obtained
from the Newman Visitor Centre.

Citizenship Ceremony

Thank a Volunteer Day

Annually, the Shire hosts an event to
show appreciation for all the volunteers
who work tirelessly to make the town of
Newman into a community.
In 1985, the UN established International
Volunteer Day to be celebrated annually on
5 December. The day helps organisations
and individual volunteers raise awareness
of their contributions to economic and
social developments and to give special
thanks to those working to make our
community a better place to live.
This year, the Shire will host a free lunch on
Monday 5 December.

Congratulations to the fifteen Newman

residents who became Australian Citizens
in September. Gday to our newest
citizens, from Zimbabwe, New Zealand,
Philippines, United Kingdom, Taiwan,
Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Denmark,
who are adding to our amazing cultural
diversity that already exists in our region.
The ceremony in the Shire chambers was
conducted by Councillor Craig Hoyer.

An invitation is out for people and

community organisations to nominate
volunteers to the Shire, which will
recognise the volunteers with a Certificate
of Appreciation. There will also be an
award for the East Pilbara Volunteer of
the Year and Youth Volunteer of the
Year. Last years category winners were
Newmans R.S.L. President, Ian Thompson,
and Lachlan (Lachy) Thomas.

BMX N.W. Super Series

By Stephanie Foster

In September, after months of planning,

Newman hosted its second North West
Super Series event since re-establishment
of the club in 2015. Committee members
and volunteers worked tirelessly to
fundraise and install new equipment and
facilities.
The East Pilbara BMX Club is very thankful
for all the generous sponsor contributions
especially the overall N.W. Super Series
sponsors, Optiflow, Goodline and the
Pilbara Motor Group.
The weekend started with the pre-event
seeing a massive 145 riders participate.
The racing was fast and gave an indication
of how impressive the last round would be.
After the wet weather at last year's event,
the EP BMX Club had something to prove
to the other clubs in the series. The track
was looking in excellent racing condition.
There were 228 entries, with riders from
Tom Price, Karratha, and Port Hedland,
with 50 riders from Newman. Eighty-nine
were in the sprocket class (under 8s).
The spectators witnessed competitive
racing from all classes and a massive
improvement in Newman's riders resulting
in podium finishes for many. EP BMX Club's

focus was on coaching

this year that included
four sessions from
pro-coaches as well
as accreditation of
five local beginner
coaches, really paid
off. Great revenue
was also raised by
the club thanks to
volunteers
running
catering and raffles.
As this was the last
event in the Series,
all riders rode hard to
claim their final points
and title at the overall
awards presentation.

There were three crashes resulting in quick

paramedic intervention and transfer to
Newman hospital where, thankfully, all
were discharged with no major injuries.
BMX WA Officials commented on how well
organised the event was, particularly in the
staging area.
Sunday morning saw the conclusion of
the N.W. Super Series. The EP BMX Club
put on a big breakfast for all sponsored
by the Newman Vets Football Club and
Healthways. Awards were presented to

riders who claimed points for competing in

three or more rounds.
A massive 34 East Pilbara BMX Club riders
were awarded with the top eight positions,
six of which were podium finishes with all
riders talking home trophies.
The EP BMX Club is proud of all its riders
and enjoyed a very successful event!
Congratulations to the NWSS Committee
on a job well done. Looking forward to
what the 2017 Super Series will bring!

For the warm weather only swimmers who may not be aware of
all the changes at the Newman Aquatic Centre, there has been
a newly installed activities area including basketball hoop, ping
pong table, shaded volleyball area, and new BBQ facilities, along
with existing free WiFi access.
The high standard of the aquatic centre, with its Olympic size
pool, is reflected in the centre being awarded the hosting
of the Pilbara Swimming Championships, a prelude to the
State Swimming Championships. Ten regional towns will
be represented by 300 competitors between the 25 and 27
November 2016. The Newman Aquatic Centre is more than
ready to cater for this prestigious event.
In September, 26 people obtained or renewed their lifeguard
qualifications in readiness for summer to help keep everyone
safe.
The Newman Swim School Open Day will be conducted on
Sunday 9 October between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon. Entry
during that time will be free. The centre also offers cultural
swimming lessons where groups of people can gather, learn
lifesaving swimming skills and socialise on a platform designed
to remove language as a barrier to learning.
The Newman Aquatic Centre is a great place to have an end of
year work celebration or a childs birthday party. Get in early if
you want to book the giant inflatables for your event as they
have proven to be very popular.
