C F S D Governing Board Meeting

Super Volunteer Recognition

The governing board recognized Patrick Bingham as a
super volunteer. Board President Eileen Jackson
reviewed the volunteer efforts of Mr. Bingham at
Ventana Vista Elementary School where he dedicates
10 hours weekly helping wherever needed. Mr.
Binghams support of Ventana Vista teachers, staff and
students exemplifies the part of the CFSD mission
about a caring, collaborative learning community.
Approval of New Policy IHAMC Instruction and
Training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (third
reading)
Associate Superintendent Mary Jo Conery presented
the proposed revisions to the new policy. During the
second reading the board recommended changes to
the policy language that eliminated phrases with school
district(s) and/or charter school(s). Dr. Conery reported
that language was added in place of the eliminated
phrases to reflect a specific reference to the CFSD
district. The board approved the recommended
revisions to the policy as presented.
Approval of Revisions to Policy JJJ Extracurricular
Activity Eligibility (second reading)
Assistant Superintendent Denise Bartlett provided a
summary of the recommended revisions discussed
during the first reading of the policy: 1. Restricting a
student from wearing a religious or cultural accessory
or hairpiece while participating in an extracurricular or
athletic activity; 2. Academic eligibility, Grades 9-12,
changing the specific letter grade for passing to the
word passing; 3. Cumulative eligibility check, changing
the time period for how long a student remains
ineligible to two weeks at the semester; and, 4.
Changes in the area of academic eligibility for Grades
6-8. Currently, the middle schools use a rubric scoring
to determine grades. There is a need to change the
passing grade from D to 2.0. There were no additional
recommendations or revisions. The board approved
the recommended revisions to the policy as presented.

Consideration of Revisions to Policy EBAA

Reporting of Hazards/Warning Systems (Pesticide
Application Notice) (first reading
Superintendent Mary Kamerzell presented the
proposed revisions to the districts current policy.
During the Arizonas 2016 legislative session, House
Bill 2190 initiated changes to a number of education or
education related statutes. The revised statute only
includes the following requirements: 1. Notification for
families and employees at least forty-eight hours
before pesticides are applied to school property; 2.
Oral notification to students and employees during the
regular school day; and, 3. Written, electronic or
telephonic notification to parents/guardians. The policy
will be brought back to the board for a second reading
at its next meeting on October 10.
Consideration of Revisions to Policy JC School
Attendance Areas (first reading)
Dr. Kamerzell reported that Policy JC was also affected
due to House Bill 2190. Statute language was omitted
from this policy that referenced the districts obligation
to notify an entity that donated land within the past five
years of its governing boards decision to change an
attendance boundary affecting that property. This
policy will be brought back to the board for a second
reading at its next meeting on October 10.
Catalina Foothills District Assessment Program
Dr. Conery provided a summary on the multiple types
of assessments administered in CFSD and their
results. The types of assessments included formative,
summative, standardized, and performance based
assessments. The data are used to inform instruction,
measure subject area mastery of content, evaluate
programs, and improve achievement. She provided a
report of CFSDs aggregate scores on Arizonas
Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform
Teaching (AzMERIT), which is an assessment used to
examine growth in performance. Each AzMERIT test is
aligned to Arizonas academic standards and
measures progress toward readiness for college and
career pathways. CFSD had the highest passing rates
of the Tucson areas nine major school districts, with
about 69 percent of CFSD students passing AzMERIT
in English Language Arts and about 68 percent in
mathematics. Dr. Conery provided an analysis of
student results for the College Work Readiness
Assessment (CWRA+) and AIMS Science as well as
how the district is using the student results from the

local common performance assessments. The

summary report of CFSDs assessment program
provides valuable information about assessments
being used to measure student growth and the related
performance results and will be posted on the district
website at www.cfsd16.org.
