Background of the study

The City of Ormoc, the center of commerce and industry on the western part of
Leyte, is the first non-provincial capital city of the Philippines. It is a showcase of
progress and modernity even as its history is a saga of sacrifice, toils and privations of its
founders. Before the Portugues navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, reached Leyte in 1521, a
handful of Malayan families lived in a small settlement called OGMOK an old Visayan
term for lowland or depressed plain. OGMOK was also name of a spring located
between the present barangays of Donghol and Mahayag. The name ORMOC evidently,
is the variation of the original name and came into use with coming of the Spanish
Conquistadores and the migration of people from the enamoring towns and islands to
settle in its fertile plains.
The primitive Malayans had some well-developed trade and commerce with the
Chinese, Javans and Indonesians who frequented the islands in their junks, vintas and
sailboats. Pigafetta, the Spanish historian mentioned OGMOK in his chronicles as one
place in Leyte where Magellan touched in search of food and water in March 1521.
On Nov. 5, 1991 a natural calamities (flashflood) hit in the city. Thousands of
Ormocanons suffered from its wrath. Not mentioning those lives who were taken, and the
grieve felt of their loved ones from the sudden loss. Infrastructures were also destroyed
which greatly affects the economy of Ormoc City. But after that fatal incident, the city of
Ormoc rised and continued.
Different kinds of businesses were established. One of them is the recovery of the
shopping stores which is one of the most profitable businesses. And as the technology

evolves, the manual time consuming shopping then turned now into a hassle-free
shopping which could be done even in your own home. Thus, these kinds of changes with
the help of technology make the Ormoc citys economy arises.
The online shopping is the most convenient way of allowing the customers to
shop and choose their desired item, wherein they dont need to visit the shopping stores
just to check the availability of the item they want to buy. Shopping can be done in their
most convenient way with just a click away. They can order and pay it via online. No
hassle, no time consuming transactions. Making every transaction as easy and as
convenient in the way they wanted to, with just a blink of an eye.
The locale study of online business in Ormoc City is through Facebook. On
Facebook, the people are coming to the platform not only to connect with friend and
family but also to indorsed and sell their item. This behavior is already happening on
Facebook, it gives us a chance to make people and marketers experiences better.
Many stores in Ormoc City who sell assorted products like computers, cellphones,
accessories and other products are not yet using proper online selling. The other shopping
stores are selling products through Facebook and the process of their selling a product is
meeting up.

b. Statement of the Problem

The general problem without the online shopping is that the customers are
wasting their time going to the shopping mall and the expensive transportation also
affects to the customers in going to supermarket or shopping mall.
Here are some specific problems in the absence of online shopping:

The customers have problems looking for the desired product.

The customers need to visit shopping stores just to check the availability of the item

that they want to buy.

The customers cannot instantly compare products to another shopping area.
The customers cannot save their time because of the long queues in paying at the

cashier.
Some customers cant do walk-in shopping because they are busy at their work.
The customer having a pressure on buying a product because sometimes they are in a

rush in purchasing a product.

The customers need to meet up the seller just to claim the product.
Some online shops are pre-order.
Tracking of order.
Some orders are delay due to holiday and bad weather.
Scam and fraud.

c. Objectives of the Study

The general objective of our study is to be able to create a website for shoppers in
Ormoc City where they can easily order or search a product to decrease the expensive
transportation.

Here are some specific objectives of this proposed system:

To develop an online shopping website that can easily find a product.

To be able to develop a system that can order products from Ormoc through

online.
To develop a system that features product comparison.
To encourage the customer to conveniently pay a product without any wasting

time.
To improve the manual operations of Ormoc City shopping into an automated

business.
To enhance the customer service through the online shopping system.
To decrease or minimize the physical effort of going to shopping malls and

establishment.
To develop an online shopping that provides good delivery service.
To be able to deliver the products on time.
To reduce crime such as scam and fraud.
To able to track the customers order.

d. Significance of the Study

The proposed system will have 4 beneficiaries: first is the customer, the e-commerce,
the companies and the researchers.
The Customer can compare products or services they wish to purchase from the
comfort of their own homes. Instead of having to visit a number of different retail outlets,
the user simply has to open different internet window tab to compare prices or features of
the product or service they wish to purchase. Many retailing websites offer the facility
where different products they sell can now be easily compared. There is also price
comparison websites that customers can use to get the best preferable price for their

products. The customer is the one who could benefit the most. They are the one who
visited the site and purchase the item they want to. They dont need to visit the shopping
store. They can do their shopping, even in their own home with just a click away. And
most of all, they dont need to wait and fall in line in a long queues upon paying.
E-commerce enables a company or individual to get to the global market. Online
business offers both local and international market, as the business is no longer restricted
by geographical boundaries. Since Online Marketing allows one to execute business
transactions twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and even holidays which can
make the profit and sales increase.
Companies have also taken advantage to this Ormoc Online shopping because their
company will be advertised. When a customer orders a product or item, users or admin
can order from one of the company or stores in the Ormoc City. And they also have
company like LBC to deliver the ordered items to the customers. For the company, this
will help them in gaining knowledge of the current trend in marketing which is the use of
internet.
The Researchers of this study and future researchers will be able to get ideas about
developing an online system and be able to add some features by referring to the
recommendation page. This study also helps the researchers in enhancing their problemsolving capabilities and programming skills. It will also allow the researchers to apply
their knowledge.

e. Scope and limitation of the System

The researchers aim to develop an electronic-based ordering for Ormoc City since
they are still using a manual system in their transactions, payments and even in
generating reports. The system will consist of some significant modules in order to satisfy
the companys needs as well as the customers.
SCOPE
The system will provide a security module which will have three level of access
such as Administrators, Members and Guests. Administrator is fully responsible for
monitoring and maintaining the website since they have access on some modules which
are hidden on guests and even members such as Product Management, Sales and

Inventory, Reports, Order Management and others. At first, the system will only have one
(1) administrator who has the authority to add more administrators by filling up the form
which is available only in the Admin module. This form will need some information of
the personnel such as full name, contact number, username, and password. In case of
suspicious acts of the newly added Administrators, the main Admin has power to
deactivate them.
As for the Members, the system will provide an area wherein they can view and
manage their orders. They can also request for tracking status provided that they
purchased an item. Unlike the members, the guest can only browse the website but no
transactions can be held unless they would register.
Registration can be easily done by filling up the form with their personal
information such as First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Password, Complete
Address, Contact Numbers (mobile or telephone). Log in information must also fill up by
providing a preferred username and password. An email address is also required. Once
the details have been validated, a confirmation message will be sent to the users email
for verification purposes. A user must send a code provided by the sent email. It will then
redirect the user to the log-in page. The Log-in page can be found in the homepage and in
a separate page. The registered users must be verified first in order to log-in successfully.
Otherwise, they will prompted by an error message.
Both members and guest can browse the store. This store is sorted according to
the category which is called a Product Catalog. This is where the consumers select their
orders. It is packed with basic contents such as Product image, price, short description
and a button for More info. In case they are looking for a specific product, a search

section is provided. Once the consumer clicks the More info button, it will redirect
them to a page for an elaborate description and more sample photos of the product they
choose together with an Add to cart button.
Ordering can be done just by clicking the Add to Cart button. The system
automatically adds the item to the consumers Shopping Cart as long as the product is
available. If not, a message will be prompted.
A Shopping Cart can be viewed in the right column of the home and store page or
in a separate page wherein the consumer must input the quantity of the product. A default
quantity is one (1). The Shopping Cart contains the summary of the orders such as
Product Name, quantity, price, shipping fee and the total cost. If the customer wants to
cancel the ordered items, they can easily remove a specific product off their Shopping
Cart or simply click Empty Cart.
These systems also have Terms and Condition to protect the company and also the
customer from any disagreement. These systems also have Global Positioning System
(GPS) to locate the order tracking number of a product/item. These systems also have a
mobile application to order a product or item by not using a computer.
For questions regarding the transactions, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is
available which consist of questions with respective answers. For further inquiries, the
users might as well use the Contact Us page to privately ask the Administrator regarding
a specific concern. This is open to all the site viewers. A reply from Admin may take
hours or days during office hours.
Comments or Suggestions are also welcome to the sites Chat box. This is where
the guest can simply connect to other visitors by entering name and message. Spam and

10

other non-site -related messages are can still be deleted by the Administrator. A user can
share a specific page to their preferred social networking sites such as Facebook and
Twitter. This will help the website in gaining more viewers as part of marketing strategy.
The system will also include some modules that are viewable only to
Administrator. These modules are mostly for managing, maintaining and monitoring
website, orders, users and products. One of these modules is Products Inventory and
Monitoring. This is where the Admin can view a summary of the products in-stock, out of
stock. Below of the summary is a table of all Products containing the Product ID, Product
Image, Product Name, Price, Number of Stocks, Category, Shipping Fee, Date Added and
column for Edit and Delete buttons. To easily search for a product, filtering is available.
Maintenance allows the Admin to add/update/delete products and Categories. In
order to add new items in the store, the Admin must input the required text fields such as
Product Name, Selling Price, Shipping Fee, Short Description, Additional Information,
Product Image thumbnail and select the appropriate category. Optional fields are Original
Price and additional photos. Product name must not match the other available items in
store. Price and shipping fee must be in Philippine Peso. Under maintenance module also
is the site configuration. This enables the Admin to update the site information such as
Company Address, Tel. No., Email and Shop Description.
The system will also provide a Report module which contains information about
the Total sales of the Company daily, monthly or yearly. It also generates a graph with
corresponding interpretation of the most purchased products. A summary of visitor counts
and number of registered members are also included in this module.
LIMITATION

11

The limitation of this system is the delivery of the product, includes risk on
transportation in the sense that shipping is shouldered by the customers. Once the
products arrived with damaged, the customer is no longer liable on the products. There
are also some tendencies of delay on order processing and delivery because of some
places in ormoc is difficult to penetrate the delivery truck.
Our products are exclusive and only available in Ormoc City. The GPS cannot
detect and locate the exact location of the customers address and our delivery hour is not
24 hours. The limitation of our free delivery is based on minimum of the amount order,
and our delivery is within Ormoc City only. Remittance and Online Banking are also not
allowed.
