The XControl controllers offer classical PLC functions, as well as with XC600
built-in IT functions. This meets customer demands for implementing networking,
telecontrol service, linking in of peripheral equipment, and data exchange with the
management level, in addition to the control function itself.
The differences between individual XControl types in the main lie in their memory
capacity, speed and available interfaces.
XC100 is compact and expandable in design, with an integrated CANopen
fieldbus interface and 8/6 digital inputs/outputs built-in. The modules from the
XI/OC range can be fitted as local I/O (inputs/outputs, communication, etc.).
XC600 is based on PC/104 modules embedded in stackable aluminium frames.
Up to three additional modules (e.g. fieldbus master) can be inserted between
base module, power supply module and CPU module. An operator module with
comfortable menu guidance completes the structure towards the front. XI/OC
modules can be fitted as local I/O.

There are various ways of transferring programs and data from the programming
PC to XControl controllers.

Among the CPU types, there are variants for programmable controllers with fitted
visual display and/or with Web server (XV), as well as for controllers without fitted
visual display and without Web server (XC).

XSystem

Networking of programmable controllers

XSystem

XControl controllers can be networked with one another. This can be done via
Ethernet (UDP), CANopen or PROFIBUS DP. Engineering is quite straightforward:
the required variables are declared as global network variables in XSoft. Then, they
are bundled in groups of variables. Groups of variables can now be assigned to each
controller in a targeted fashion, to make sure that it is precisely defined as to which
controllers exchange which variables with each other. Furthermore, each group of
variables can be configured as Read only or Write only within each individual
controller, thus enabling the setting up of One-way data routes if required.
Example:

XSystem

Telecontrol service and remote programming

XSystem

Telecontrol service means remote monitoring, diagnosis and control. XSystem

optimally supports telecontrol in that it enables event-triggered e-mails to be sent,
but also fully allows visualization via Web visual display pages. These are generated
by XSoft based on the integrated visualization, in other words no other software is
necessary. When the project is downloaded, they are saved on the XControl-internal
Web server.
Web-based remote monitoring can be carried out anywhere, on a PC with Web
browser (e.g. Internet Explorer). This tool enables the service specialist to make a
remote diagnosis and controlling intervention anywhere in the world, without
having to waste time on travelling.
The entire application running on a control system, i.e. the visualization interfaces
as well as the program can be accessed by remote programming. The PC merely has
to have XSoft. A notebook-PC is connected to the telephone network via a modem,
or a fixed PC via routers, to enable telecontrol service or remote programming to be
carried out.

For safety reasons, it is normally preferred on the machine or installation site that
the telecontrol service link be kept apart from the internal net, and that a separate
Ethernet-ISDN connection be provided instead. For this purpose, it is necessary to
have an ISDN telephone connection (or the equipment required for analog
telephone networks) installed on the site, in addition to an Ethernet-ISDN router.
This router establishes the Ethernet link to the controller when requested to do so
via the telephone, and provided all the safety conditions have been met. Such
conditions can be based for example on router functions such as password
protection, call-back or firewall.

Data exchange via OPC

PC/104: Integration of customer-specific automation tasks

OPC (OLE for process control) is used for the standardized, i.e. non-manufacturer
specific data exchange in automation. OPC clients in this context are Windows
applications, such as SCADA programs, display functions, control consoles or ERP
(Enterprise Resource Planning) programs. These OPC clients download data from
the OPC server as required. The OPC server provides up-to-date data, e.g.
production quantities, measured values or operational hours.

Due to the PC/104 format, XControl XC600 offers the openness necessary to
integrate customer-specific automation tasks such as image processing.
Appropriate PC/104 expansion modules can be based on electronic boards available
in the trade or developed for the purpose by the customer.
The secure and reliable integration into the hardware as well as software is
provided by Moeller. Such solutions are available on request.
PROFIBUS DP or CANopen?

PC

PC

OPC client

OPC client

The XSystem offers the choice between PROFIBUS DP and CANopen. Some of the
technical characteristics and typical benefits are listed below as an aid to deciding
which is appropriate.
PROFIBUS DP
Master/slave network in which the master cyclically polls the slaves or sends signals
to them. In addition, acyclical transmissions are possible, such as for the transfer of
large data packets or for event-triggered signals. Direct slave-to-slave
communication is not envisaged.
Typical benefits/areas of application:
Rapid, cyclical data exchange between the central PLC and as a rule simple, i.e.
non-pre-processing peripheral slaves (straightforward and cost-efficient I/
O network integration)
Incorporation of intrinsically safe applications (PROFIBUS PA) via segment
couplers

Controller
XControl XC100
With XControl XC600, the data exchange takes place via Ethernet. Here, the OPC
server is an integral part of the control system. The assignment of variables to the
OPC server therefore, is simply done by means of XSoft. XControl XC100 realizes
the classical OPC structure: an OPC server external to the controller receives data
via RS 232. The OPC clients communicate with this server.

CANopen
Multi-master network in which messages of unequal priority are transmitted by
broadcasting. Provided the bus is free, any of the stations can begin to send. In the
event of collision, lower-priority messages are initially withdrawn and sent again at
the next opportunity (however, if the bus is particularly busy, they are deliberately
delayed). Should a higher-priority message meet a lower-priority one whose
transmission is in progress, then this transmission is nevertheless concluded before
the high-priority message is sent. However, in order to ensure that high-priority
transmissions are not unduly delayed, the message format used is relatively short.
Typical benefits/areas of application of CANopen:
Efficient, rapid transmission between intelligent, pre-processing stations
(distributed intelligence)
High level of transmission security; especially advantageous for safety-related
applications

XSystem

Ethernet
With XControl XC200 (in preparation) and XC600, XSystem offers integrated
Ethernet communication. The following tasks can be implemented via Ethernet:

XSystem

a Program download
b Networking with the internal net (for file exchange with PCs or for data
exchange with OPC clients)
c Networking between programmable controllers
d Establishment of a telecontrol service link

PC

Router

XControl 1
Every Ethernet participant (and thus also the XControl controller) is allocated an IP
address, a subnet mask and a gateway. These are assigned via the operator module
menu (XC600) or via XSoft (XC200/600).
The IP address is the logical address of the network participant and takes the
format: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, whereby xxx = (0 255). In XControl, the address reserved
for local networks is preset as: 192.168.xxx.xxx. This IP address can be changed if
required. Please note in this context, that values between 1 and 254 must be used
in the last address section, since 0 (network) and 255 (broadcast) are reserved. The
subnet mask determines to which part of the network an IP participant can send
messages. All other messages go to the gateway (in telecontrol, for example, this
is the ISDN router), whence the link to the addressee of the telegram is established.
Generally, messages (26 header Bytes and 46 to 1500 user data Bytes) are only
accepted by network participants provided the IP address applies to them, or the
message is being broadcast or multicast.
Ethernet communication is based on the CSMA/CD principle that allows network
participants common access to the Ethernet. There is no master required for this;
neither is it necessary for new participants to log on or off. If an Ethernet station
wants to send, it checks first whether the network is free (CS = Carrier Sense); if
YES, it sends without delay. During the send, it examines whether another station
(MA = Multiple Access) is sending at the same time (CD = Collision Detection) and
interrupts immediately should this be the case. After (as a rule unequal) random
delays, both stations make another attempt to send.
When building a network structure, so-called active components (e.g. hubs,
switches, routers) are used. Networks with star topology use hubs or switches as
distributors. Where a hub is used, all data packets sent are passed on to all the
connected participants. Every station must then verify whether or not the packet is
meant for it. In other words, although the packet is meant for only one participant,
all stations connected are involved. Switches on the other hand, direct data packets
only to the target station and thereby represent far less of a load on the network
than a hub. Collisions arising out of CSMA/CD, are avoided using switches.
Routers are used in order to connect networks with one another. This also applies
to the connection between the local Ethernet network at the controller and the
ISDN network (via ISDN router) for telecontrol service purposes.

Description
XControl XC600

Application
The high-specification XControl XC600 PLC is designed for utilization in machine
and control panel building. It is based on an open software and hardware platform.
Thus it is versatile in applicability and ready also for the future. Its large memory
capacity and high operating speed makes XC600 particularly suited to complex
applications. With its integrated Ethernet interface, built-in OPC server and other
progressive features, XControl XC600 provides optimum solutions especially for
control tasks that run alongside IT functions such as operating data acquisition,
telecontrol service, plant management applications, etc..
Features
XControl XC600 is of modular construction, with the modules equipped with
PC/104 cards and embedded in robust metal frames that can be linked and separated without tools. The base module serves to allow the system to be mounted on a
top-hat rail and for local connection of I/O modules where required. The basic equipment also includes the power supply module, the CPU module, as well as the operator module. The latter allows convenient access via displays and menus, even
without a programming device or XVision panel being connected. Up to three
expansion modules, such as PROFIBUS DP or CANopen master modules, or even
other, customer-specific PC/104 cards (to be fitted at the factory), can be inserted
between the power supply and CPU modules. Where the XC600 is connected to the
XVision visual display system (by latching the CPU module into the rear wall of the
display unit), there is no need for the operator module, and a different base module
variant is used. Programming is effected via the convenient XSoft software. Peripheral equipment can be directly plugged in via the XI/OC or XI/ON I/O systems or
coupled via fieldbus networks such as PROFIBUS DP or CANopen. Ethernet or fieldbus can link XC600 systems to other XControl controllers, or to a higher-level network; telecontrol service is another option. In other words, the XControl XC600
forms the basis for construction of a comprehensive automation system.

Features

Compact text display controllers

XVision text displays are the user-friendly interface between controller and operating personnel. XVision, in conjunction with the XControl controller and the XI/OC
I/O modules, completes a combination PLC, also called an MMI PLC, i.e. an integrated unit comprising controller, I/O and visualization.
Text display controllers have the display window, a keypad (numerical keys, arrow
keys, function keys) and the PLC status LEDs on the front. The operator surface can
be customized.
Text display controllers have the following features:
A common software (XSoft) for XVision and the XControl controller, with central
data management, brings data consistency, as well as savings in engineering.
Menu guidance incorporated:
Controller configuration, e.g. menu language, password
Interrogation regarding error and events list, up-to-date software version, etc.
Displays: positive STN technoloy with trans-reflective yellow-green LCD display
Large key surface (13 x 15 mm) for operator convenience
Clear layout of the keypad sections
Backlighting can be switched On and Off via the software (e.g. blinking function
can be activated as a warning)
Contrast adjustable, 0 100 %
Controller status indication (3 LEDs) built into the front
Minimum frame height saves space
Very high reaction speed due to direct connection to the CPU
Front surface can be customized

XSystem

XI/OC modules

Features
XI/OC is a modular I/O system for linking sensors and actuators of the field level with
the XControl controller, and optimized as far as space requirement is concerned. It
enables localized I/O topologies (directly fitted to the XControl) as well as distributed I/O topologies (via fieldbus and gateway) to be implemented. In combination
PLC topologies (controller and visual display in one unit), the XI/OC modules are latched into the rear wall of the XVision panel alongside the XControl controller fitted
there as well. In localized topologies, up to 7 XI/OC modules are directly fitted to the
controller. Backplanes are used to secure the equipment to the top-hat rail and to
provide the communication link (XI/OC parallel bus) between the modules and the
controller. In distributed I/O topologies, up to 7 XI/OC modules are attached to one
XI/OC gateway that is itself a fieldbus slave. Here too backplanes are used.
General data about XI/OC
Uniform I/O system covering the entire range of XSystem controllers (XControl
XC100, XC600), as local I/O, or also in conjunction with XVision visual displays
(combination PLCs)
For construction of centralized as well as distributed I/O structures
Surface area as well as space requirement are optimized on these I/O modules
Connection options with screw terminals or cage-clamp terminals

Application
XSoft combines in one tool the facility for programming, configuration, testing/commissioning and visual display, for the entire XSystem product range.
Features
Programming languages to IEC/EN 61131-3
Instruction list (IL)
Ladder diagram (LD)
Function block language/diagram (FBL/FBD)
Structured text (ST)
Sequential function chart (SFC)
Continuous function chart (CFC)
Structured programming
Utilization of a comprehensive function block library
Setting up of user functions and function blocks that can then be reused, having
been programmed using symbols, independently of addressing and device.
Visualization
Common database with programming (single declaration)
Can be used for simulation and WEB visualization
Instantiation enables multiple use of objects
Simulation based on visualization
Can be used on the programming PC: visual display objects (images) show elements (e.g. oblongs, circles or active surfaces) that are logically linked with the
variables of the control program
Optimum monitoring of algorithms
WEB visualization
Representation of the controlled process via standard PC (with WEB browser),
e.g. in the internal net (Intranet) for work preparation, or remotely for use in telecontrol service
Any visual display object (image) can be selected for WEB visualization
Images need not be recreated, because the touch screen visual display images can
be used
During downloading of the project, XSoft converts the selected visualization
objects to XML code which is then written into the WEB server of the controller
(XControl XC600)
Integrated Java applets then automatically ensure regular data updating
Topology configuration integrating fieldbus
Uniform notation for local and telecontrolled data points
Configuration of fieldbus stations (PROFIBUS DP and CANopen)
Online status indication
Simulation/testing and debugging
Simulation of the user program on the PC even without the controller being connected
Online program modification, online modification/insertion of variables
Forcing: presetting of variable values
Tracing: recording of process variables

Breakpoint/single cycle: enforced interruption of the program for the purpose of

observing variable values at a particular point in the program
Single step: execution of individual program lines while displaying the variable
values
Watch function and recipe administration: display and presetting of selected
variables for transfer into the controller (recipe writing). Equally, it is possible to
upload actual values from the controller into the watch function and recipe administration and then save them.
Dialogue languages
German, English, French
Multi-tasking system
It is possible for several programs to run simultaneously
Priorities can be set (0 31) for the various tasks
The user defines the call-up interval (minimum of 1 ms) between tasks, or the
tasks are started according to events (e.g. rising edge of a global variable or
occurrence of an interrupt signal)
The real-time capability of the PLC is ensured by time reservation
Monitoring by watchdog
Documentation
Comprehensive documentation of XSoft projects by printing out of:
All function blocks
The data types
The visual displays

Ethernet interface
Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 SP6 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP
XSoft closed-loop control toolbox (XSOFT-APPLIB-REG)
The XSoft closed-loop control toolbox is a function block library containing a broad
selection from the areas of PID control, pulse-width modulation, signal processing,
simulations and mathematical functions. The self-explanatory names of function
blocks, the logical structure of the function blocks, as well as the manual which is
geared towards practical application, make it easy to learn how to use closed-loop
control: parameter allocation instead of programming. This considerably cuts down
engineering time.
XSoft motion control toolbox (XSOFT-APPLIB-MOTIONCONTROL)
The XSoft motion control toolbox is a function block library for all kinds of drive
tasks such as position control, master-slave positioning, electronic gears, cam controllers, frequency measuring, etc.
