Ray Cranston was born in

Colville, Washington, and grew
up on a dairy farm near Coeur
dAlene, Idaho. He attended the
University of Idaho, graduating
with a BS (ME) in 1961, when he
joined a consulting engineering
firm in Missoula, Montana called
General Engineers.
Ray moved to California in
1964 and joined F. T. Andrews,
Inc., Mechanical Engineers. He
was hired by Richard Palmer,
P.E., who was Chief Engineer
at the time. Their offices were
in Fullerton and remained in
North Orange County
until the firm was sold
to the IDS Group in
2008. Ray moved from
design engineer to chief
engineer, to president and
finally owner when Ray
and partner Jim Belna
purchased the firm from
Frank T. Andrews, P.E.
the founder. His partner
Jim retired in 1998 and passed
away in 2013. Ray is a licensed
mechanical engineer in California
and Arizona.
The firms practice included

agencies, Hughes Aircraft,
North American Rockwell,
Union Oil, Raytheon
Systems, Western
Medical Center, Anaheim
General Hospital, and J. P.
Morgan Chase. Since his
retirement in December
2013, Ray continues to
consult with the IDS Group.
Ray was a founding father of
the Orange Empire Chapter of
ASHRAE and worked with Ken
Watts to get the Chapter started
and chartered in 1968. He served

as Chapter President in 19711972 and beyond on several

committees through the years.
Now that Ray is officially
retired and no longer works at
the office 10 - 12 hours a day, he
has time to travel with his wife of
50 years, play golf and explore
other passions that include
gardening and reading. Ray is
an active member of Eastside
Christian Church in Anaheim,
serving on the guest services
and hospitality team, and the
facility management team. He is a
member of the board of directors
for Helping Hands Adult Day
Care, a provider of services for
developmentally disabled adults.
He is a member of OCV, the
Orange County (Cor) Vette club.
One can imagine him enjoying
a good wine with his wife on
the patio of their Laguna Beach
condominium while watching the
sunset.
Thank you Ray for providing
information for this article and for
your many years of service to the
industry, ASHRAE and helping to
found its Orange Empire Chapter.

E MONEY SAVING TIP
BUY THE SEASON PASS!
Who isnt trying to save a buck these days?
But, act quickly to reap the full benefits!
Are you always forgetting to make your meeting reservation?
Do you hate standing in long check-in lines?
Are you planning to attend at least 7 meetings this coming year?
Make this year THE YEAR that you finally make your life
simpler with an Orange Empire Season Pass!
Your Board of Governors has once again authorized the offering of a Season Pass to our meetings for 20162017. There is only one catch. To maximize the savings, the pass must be purchased no later than October
24, 2016 (no credit for September meeting cost if purchased in October). You can even do it online!
The price is only $320.00! This includes all of our regular meetings at the Holiday Inn ($40-$45 each) as well
as all of our special meetings throughout the year. This includes the December 13th Holiday Meeting, our joint
meetings with ASPE and the San Diego Chapter, as well as the Installation Dinner on May 23rd!
The cost of the latter four events is always higher than our regular meetings. Thats all nine meetings included
with one season pass!
To get a Season Pass, simply indicate your intentions with your advanced reservations online or at check-in for
the September 22nd meeting while bringing your $320.00. One checkdone paid up for the ENTIRE YEAR!
Assuming you plan to attend all nine meetings, the Season Pass cost averages to less than $36 per meeting!
Thereafter, just register in advance online stating your meal choice and that you will pay at the door. Then, let
Carlon Haywood know at the door that youve arrived the night of the meeting to receive your meal ticket.
But wait! Theres more! If you have an aversion to long term commit-ments, your pass is even transferable to a
friend or colleague for an evening that you miss!
Beyond supporting your Chapter, convenience alone should tempt you to consider a season pass. So, why
not take the step now to eliminate one uncertainty from your life Buying a Season Pass locks in a genuine
bargain! Steve Rawski
