Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

Landslide is one of the most horrifying natural disasters which is unfortunately

unavoidable. This geological hazard can be caused by factors such as earthquake, mining, and
rainfall. Landslide is natural calamity that produces a mass of rock and earth moving suddenly
and quickly down a steep slope. The factor that makes the site prime for failure the soil the
second one is if it has a steep slope and the last which trigger the cause is the water. A lot of
water or rainfall in a short period of time causes the land to be vulnerable.
Slope movement depend in various factors like geology, hydrology, hydrogeology and
soil mechanics. The scope and analysis of these hence is broad. The deterioration of the slope
that corresponds with time is mechanically changing its factors to even worsen the scenario. An
essential of the slope that controls a large amount of risk associated with its slope movement
without reference to the forces that cause the motion. As sited slope movement is divided into
four stages every stage is specified by their mechanical behavior: pre-failure, failure, post-failure
and reactivation. The characterization of the geotechnical movement is based on the type of
material, type of movement and the four stages mentioned.
Gabions are structures that are used to protect areas along rivers against floods. Egyptians
used gabions along the Nile river and it is also used in the military to defend them from enemy
fire, during the American Civil war. A gabion is a cage filled with rocks to repair damage caused
by soil erosion and to rehabilitate river areas.

Gabion is used in road building, military,

landscaping and in civil engineering. For instance construction of dams, by creating temporary
walls and enforcing dam walls.

Galvanized steel wire is the most common wire that is used in building a gabion basket.
PVC-coated and stainless steel wire are also used and it lasts approximately about 60 years. It
goes to show tha the life expectancy of the wire will depend on how long the wire will last.
Background of the Study
Brgy San Lorenzo is one of the forty barangays in Mauban, Quezon it is the only route
going to the Cagsiay I to Cagsiay III and Quezon Power (Philippine) Limited Co., Business in
San Lorenzo up to Cagsiay III includes resorts, restaurants, pension house and even hotels. It just
goes to show that there are many locals, workers and even tourist that go back and forth in
Cagsiay I to Cagsiay III. The place also has schools elementary and high school because the
town proper is a little far from their location.
A part along the road of San Lorenzo is a steep slope. Approximately three landslides
had already occurred in that place. The recent landslide that took place was just this year (2016).
The landslide was caused by heavy rains making the soil vulnerable triggering an unfortunate
event. The only road to had been blocked by a large amount of soil from the slope. People were
not able to cross the road some are stranded and some walked their way out a long walk through
where the bacawans are located.
The municipal government had a remedy to prevent the landslide from happening again.
A remedy has been done they placed a net to the slope so that the sliding of the soil can be
controlled. This is only a remedy to prevent landslide from occurring but not a solution.

Objectives of the Study

This research aims to:

Determine the property of soil

To provide an appropriate slope protection
Vulnerability of the slope

Significance of the Study

The study would provide information and knowledge about how the slope react to its
environment with respect to time. The study will also provide a design of slope protection that is
suitable with the features of the slope. The result of this study will benefit the people of the town
by providing knowledge regarding the vulnerability of the slope.

Researchers will be able to gain knowledge, experience and information in the process of
their research. Also knowledge about civil engineering and other specializations.
This research will be a guide and reference for those that will conduct research regarding
this topic and will serve as an additional knowledge to those civil engineering students.

Scope and Limitations

The study is concerned about the variables which makes the slope vulnerable and prone
to landslide. The study is also concerned about installing the proper retaining structure with
regards to the data gathered
The study will not cover the actual installation of the retaining structure.

Definition of Terms
For clarity of the study to guide and enlighten the readers, the following terminologies
are hereby defined both conceptually and operationally.
Lanslide is natural calamity that produces a mass of rock and earth moving suddenly and
quickly down a steep slope
Assessment is the determination of quantitative or qualitative estimate of risk related to a welldefined situation and a recognized threat.
Gabion a wirework container filled with rock, broken concrete, or other material, used in the
construction of dams, retaining walls, etc.
Landslide Hazard: as represented by susceptibility, which is the likelihood of a potentially
damaging landslide occurring within a given area.
Risk (specific): the expected degree of loss due to a particular landslide phenomenon.
Slope stability is the potential of soil covered slopes to withstand and undergo movement.
Slope Protection Structures help to stabilize the slope and can last a lifetine in protecting the
surrounding properties from damage and people from injury. If they are maintained in a good and
functional condition at all times.
