Instructions

Answer all questions.

Show all your workings.

All symbols are in standard notations.

Write your address at the back of your answer script.

1. An aero plane can carry a maximum of 200 passengers. A profit of Rs. 400/=is made on
each first class ticket and a profit of Rs. 300/= on each economy class ticket. The air
plane reserves at least 20 seats for first class. However, at least 4 times as many
passengers prefer to travel by economy class than by the first class.
a) Formulate the above problem as a linear programming problem.
b) Using the graphical method determine how many of each type of tickets must be
sold to maximize the profit.

2. A manufacturer produces three types of products A, B and C. Each product requires

processing on two machines M1 and M2. The time required to produce one unit of each
product on a machine is given below.

There are 850 hours available on each machine. The operating cost is Rs. 5/ hr for
machine M1 and Rs. 4/ hr for machine M2. The market requirements are at least 90 units
of A, at least 80 units of B and at least 60 units of C. The manufacturer wishes to meet
the requirements at minimum cost.
a) Develop a linear programming model for this manufacturing situation.
b) Solve the problem and find the optimum solution.

3. Solve the following problem and find the optimum solution.

4. Solve the following problem and find the optimum solution.

5. One important factor in selecting software for word processing and database management
systems is the time required to learn how to use a particular system. In order to evaluate three
database management systems, a firm devised a test to see how many training hours were needed
for five of its word processing operators to become proficient in each of three systems.

Using a 5% significance level, is there any difference between the training time needed
for the three systems? State the assumptions you made.

6. The following ANOVA is obtained from an experiment of a chemical process done on 5

batches of raw materials. The objective was to test whether the different batches of raw
material has an effect on the yield produced by that chemical process.

the mean yield produced by the different batches of raw materials at 5% level of
significance.
