Matter Review

Directions: Type your answer to each question in a different color font and in a complete
sentence. Show all work on density problems. You may use your notebook and textbook
as needed. Click the turn in button when you are finished.

1. What two things characterize all matter? Mass & volume (take up space)
2. Give 3 examples of matter and 2 examples of things that are not matter.
Matter: salt, table, air, water etc
Not Matter: light, sound, heat
3. What is the unit of mass and how is it measured? K
g or g. Measured using a balance
4. What is volume and what are the units for volume? T
he space an object takes up. Unitssolid=cm3 or a liquid=mL or L
5. What is the difference between a physical and a chemical property? A
physical property
describes a characteristic that
6. What are 2 physical properties of an iron gate? C
olor (black) and texture (rough or smooth),
melting point, ability to conduct heat or electricity
7. What are 2 chemical properties of an iron gate? R
eactivity &
8. What is the formula for calculating density? D
ensity = mass/volume
9. What is the density of 21g of a substance whose volume is 32mL?
21g/32mL=0.66g/mL=0.66g/cm3
10. How could you find the mass of water? If you mass an empty graduated cylinder then add
water and mass it again. Subtract the two numbers and that will give you the mass of just the
water.
11. How could you find the volume of a nail? M
ass the nail on a balance. Add 50mL of water to
a graduated cylinder. Drop the nail

12. 28.5 g of iron is added to a graduated cylinder containing 45 mL of water. The water level
rises to the 49.3 mark. Calculate the density of iron. T
he mass is 28.5g. To find the volume of
the iron you would subtract the initial volume of water from the volume of water and iron
together-4.3mL. 4.3mL = 4.3cm3. Density is mass/volume so 28.5g/ 4.3cm3=6.63g/cm3
13. A cylinder that has a mass of 351 g is filled with 230 mL of a chemical. The mass of the
cylinder and the chemical is found to be 710.3 g. What is the density of the chemical? To find
density you need to first find the mass of the chemical. To do that, you would subtract the mass
of the GC from the mass of the chemical + GC. mass=121g. Density is 121g/230mL=
0.53g/mL=0.53g/cm3
14. What is a physical change? Give 2 examples. A
physical change is a change in appearance
that does not change the actual substance into something new. Examples: stretching a rubber
band, dying cotton, cutting a block of wood
15. What is a chemical change? Give 2 examples. A
chemical change is a change of a
substance into something new. Examples: iron rusting, copper tarnishing, baking soda
combining with vinegar. (Remember you can look for the key identifiers: production of a gas,
color change, change in temperature, production of an odor, formation of a precipitate)
16. Describe the particles in solids, liquids, and gases.
Solid-the particles in a solid are very close together and can vibrate
Liquid-the particles in a liquid are further apart and can slide past each other
Gas-the particles in a gas are loose and can freely move around
17. Explain shape and volume in solids, liquids and gases.
Solid-definite shape, definite volume
Liquid-no definite shape, definite volume
Gas-no definite shape, no definite volume

18. Describe evaporation and condensation.

Evaporation is the change of a liquid into a gas. The particles in the water move faster and
increase in energy to form a gas. Condensation is the change of a gas to a liquid. The particles
move slower and decrease in energy.
19. What happens to energy when a solid changes into a liquid?
When a solid changes to a liquid the energy increases as the particles move faster
20. What happens to energy when a liquid changes into a solid?
The energy decreases when a liquid changes to a solid as the particles slow down.
21. The volume of a piece of gold is 12cm3. If golds density is about 19.3 g/cm3, what is the
mass of this piece of gold?
D=m/v

m=Dv

19.3g/cm3 x 12cm3=231.6g
