LEARNING VOCABULARY THROUGH GAMES

Nowadays English has become one of the most spoken
languages in the world. It is undoubtedly that People want to learn
English more often than before for personal or for professional
development. Whatever the purpose is, it is for sure that it gives us
the opportunities to communicate with people around the world.
Nowa days new generations are much more in contact with English
than before. You can find it everywhere, such us: advertisements,
television programs and the internet with social network, or surfing
the net.

Teaching English as a second language has been a challenge

for some of us that have recently graduated as English teachers.
Teaching English is not an easy task. Not to mention that each
student is a complete different world some of them can barely speak
or write a Word in another language but, once they understand that
education is the great engine of personal development, when they
come to know that the world is experimenting a global changing and
is really important to know more than one language to communicate
with people abroad. It becomes easier for them and for you as
teacher because, you are doing an awesome job.

As far as I know education in the past used to be repetitive,

boring and passive when learning. Students were given long list of
words to memorize. I do not say it is wrong, but the hardest part of
that was that students did not make the connection to elaborate
sentences with order and a logic sense because they did not
interact. Now the methodology has definitely changed and now is
more active and easier to learn. The roles have inverted, the
students are now the principal characters of this story. Instructional
approaches with different names are used, some of them based on
repetition or translation even the music is a good tool. But with just
one purpose, it is to create in our students the ability to
communicate and make it more effective.

In" Games for language learning" (2005) Wright, A., Betteridge,

D., & Buckby, M. explain why to use games, and they establish that:
"Language learning is hard work. One must make an effort to
understand, to repeat accurately, to adapt and to use newly
understood language in conversation and in written composition.
Effort is required at every moment and must be maintained over a
long period of time. Games help and encourage many learners to
sustain their interest and work"

I want to point out the importance of the Word games, apart

from working as ice breakers it makes everything interesting and

create a good environment in class, is of course really effective to

start a class and learn new vocabulary, besides it keeps my students
engaged not to mention the great progress in spelling.

So I am

going to explain the activities I usually use in class with my students.

That it is the hangman, is used to guess words or phrases, most of
the time connected with the topic they are learning. I would like to
emphasize that the instructions must be clear since the very
beginning. Such us; Reading the instruction loud, to make sure they
really understood it is advisable to make them repeat the
instructions again otherwise the students could misunderstand the
sequence. It is really funny if is played in groups because increases
the sense of competence.
Another activity I would like to mention is when my students
remember verbs through a game called Charada in which one
student participate to perform an action by using gestures or
physical movements, obviously the person does not say anything
until one of the students knows the Word or action, it is really
important to keep the control of the class or it will be a complete
chaos. Especially when having big groups. Another variation of this
game could be to form groups and give them a marker in order to
draw on the board objects related to the Word they are guessing, as
soon as they know the Word they will write it on the board to make
the group gain points. It can be adapted to different levels if you
know the command of the language your students have.

The activity I am going to mention now is for students with a

higher level, they must use the vocabulary already learnt but this
time in more complex activities, like a Role-play, this is the kind of
activities they are supposed to interact with, in real contexts in
where they plan carefully the sequence of the conversation. What I
usually do is to give them enough information about the context and
the grammar they should include. Obviously, if they want and can,
they are allowed to use more grammar and vocabulary that was
given. They can use their dictionaries too.

I also like to use slides or show them videos with native

speakers interacting, in real situations, to let them know the way
they should use the language as a result they can make the contrast
and evaluate themselves.

Something we should never forget is that the good behavior in

class is an important aspect to keep the control in class. To avoid
discipline problems set the rules for you and your students since the
class or the game starts. it is important to mention that there should
be some codes in the classroom that the students and the teacher
must follow. For instance if the students make a lot of noise try not
to shout. Instead, you can make a movement like rising your hand or
just clap. As soon as the students will notice the movement you are

making, they will know that their attitude toward the class is not the
appropriate.

In conclution the education has changed and is different from

the past. Students were given long list of verbs or words to
memorize that was boring and tiring. So with the introduction of new
methods learning English is easier than before students learn
through games such as puzzles, crosswords, it makes it more
dynamic, interesting and exciting because they participate actively
in the class. Where the teacher bacomes the facilitator and the
students the main characters in that story.learning new vocabulary is
really important but it is much better if it is learnt through
vocabulary based on games, for some teachers it can be considered
as helpful tools to catch their students attention.
