4. MANUFACTURE

AND

COMPOSITION

4.1 The manufacture

of bitmen mastic consists of two stages.

The first
stage shall be mixing
of filler and fine aggregates and then heating the
mixture to a te,mperature
of 170 to 205C.
Required
quantity of bitumen shall be heated to 170 to 180C and added to the aggregate.
They
shall be mixed and cooked
in a mechanically
agitated
mixer called
mastic cooker for 2 to 3 hours until the materials are thoroughly
mixed.
During
mixing, care shall be taken to ensure that the contents
in the
cooker are at no time heated to a temperature
exceeding 205C.
4.1.1 In cases where the material is not required
shall be cast into blocks weighing about 25 kg.

for immediate

use, it

4.2 If required to be verified, the mastic block shall show on analysis a

composition
within the limits set in Table 3.
The analysis of the bitumen mastic shall be done in accordance
with the method
specified
in
Appendix

4.3 The second stage shall consist of the incorporation

of the coarse
aggregates.
When the bitumen mastic is to be transported directly to
the site of work, a quantity of coarse aggregate 6 to 20 mm gauge to
form not less than 30 percent and not more than 50 percent by weight
of the Gnal mixture shall be added and thoroughly incorporated with
the bitumen mastic in the cooker. The actual percentage of the coarse
aggregates to be added shall be specified according to design requirements. When the material has been cast into blocks, these shall be
reheated in the cooker to a temperature of not less than 170C and not
more than, 205C and the coarse aggregate as mentioned before shall be
thoroughly incorporated in the mastic.
4.3.1 As an anti-skid measure, the bitumen mastic after spreading and
while still hot and in plastic condition, shall be covered with a layer of
coarse aggregate 10 to 12 mm size, depending on the thickness of mastic
layer at the rate of about 7 to 8 kg per 100 rns or about 0.5 ms per
100 m2. The coarse aggregate prior to application shall be coated with 2
to 3 percent by weight of S95 or S65 grade of paving bitumen and 2 to
3 percent of filler. The coated aggregate shall be rolled or otherwise
pressed into the surface of the mastic layer.
5. HARDNESS

NUMBER

5.1 The bitumen mastic whose composition is given at Table 3 before

the addition of coarse aggregate, shall have hardness number of 60 to
80 at 25C.

ES:5317

- 1987

5.2 After the addition

of the coarse aggregate
as given in 4.3, the
bitumen mastic compositon shall have hardness
number between 10 and
20 at 25C.
NOTE - The range of hardness number values given under 5.1 and 5.2 are only
suggestive and actual hardness number desired may be decided based on the type of
binder used and the pavement temperature.

5.3 The hardness

number shall be determined
in
method specified in Appendix D of IS : 1195-1978*.

NOTE The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau
of Indian Standards Act 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder.
The
Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assuranm
that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard
under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised
and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer.
Standard marked products
are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further
safeguard.
Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard
Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the
