Shear stresses due to bending
1. A simply supported wood beam of rectangular cross-section carries a concentrated load
P at its mid span as shown in figure below . Allowable stresses in tension or
compression and shear parallel to the grain are given as = 70Kg/cm2, = 11Kgcm2.
What is the safe value of load P?

( Ans: 3647 Kg)

2. If the load P on the beam of problem 1 is replaced by a uniformly distributed load of


intensity Kg/cm2, What is the safe value of ? (Ans; 46 Kg/cm2 ) .
3. A beam supported at its ends has a span L = 1.2 m and carries a uniformly distributed
load of intensity = 30 Kg / cm over the entire span . The cross section of the beam is
T-section having the dimensions shown in figure below . Calculate the shear stress at
the junction of the flange and the web and also the maximum shear stress. (Ans; 8.87
Kg/cm2 ; 50.79 Kg/cm2 ).

4. Show from the first principal that if a beam of rectangular section is subjected to a
transverse shear force the maximum shear stress in the cross-section is 1.5 times the
average shear stress .A timber beam is simply supported at the ends and carries a
concentrated load at mid span .The maximum stress due to bending is 126 Kg/ cm2
and maximum shear stress is 10.5 Kg/ cm2. Find the ratio of span to depth of the beam
(Ans. 6 )
5. A beam of squire section o0f side a is used with a diagonal in the vertical position If the
vertical shear forces at the cross-section is F show that the shear stress at the neutral
axis is equal to the average shear stress. Also determine the maximum shear stress and
sketch the shear stress distribution. max = 9/8 avg. at a/4

6. A beam of symmetrical I-section has following dimensions;


Overall depth = inside depth measured.
Between flanges = d; width of flange = B and Thickness of the web = b/
If 1 and 2are the shearing stress at the shearing stress at the middle and top of the web
respectively, find the expression for the ratio 1-2/2 and show that it is equal to 0.34
approx. When B/b = 14 and D/d = 1.1 (Ans. Bd2 / B (D2-d2 ).
7. The cross-section of a wooded beam is an isosceles triangle, with vertex upper most,
of altitude h = 15cm and base b = 15cm. Determine the shear stress at 2.5 cm interval
from top to bottom, at a section where the vertical shear force F = 1000 Kg. Also show
that the maximum shear stress is 3F/bh located at the mid point of the altitude.
8. Starting from the first principle show that for a circular section the shear at the N.A is
maximum and is 4/3 times the average shear stress.
9. Determine the maximum and minimum shear stress in the web of section shown in
figure below if F = 40000 Kg. Also calculate the percentage of vertical shear force
carried only by the web by the web of the beam.
Ans: max = 781.4 Kg/cm2; min = 602.8 JKg/cm2 90.23%.

10. A channel section carries two concentrated loads W and a total distributed load of 6w
as shown in figure below. Determine the maximum value of W that will not exceed
allowable stress in tensile of 320 Kg/cm2, in compression of 800 Kg/cm2 or in shear of
480 Kg/cm2. (Ans W = 1190 Kg).
11. A box beam carries a distributed load of 300kg/m and a concentrated load P2 as shown
in figure below. Determine the maximum value of P if 96 Kg/cm2 and
12kg/cm2.
12. A simply supported beam of I-section has a span of 1 m and carries a central point load
of 16T.Determine the principal stresses at points 1, 2 and 3 of the critical section of the
beam. The dimension of the section is shown in figure below;
Ans:

1)max = 0; 1)min = -383 kg/cm2


2)max= 66 kg/cm2; 2 )min = -420 kg/cm2

13. In case of pure bending of a beam, prove that M/I = /Y = E/R, prove also that N.A is a
centroil axis.
14. State the assumption made in simple bending theory.
15. A horizontal beam of the section shown in figure below is 4m long and is simple
supported at its ends. Find the maximum intensity of a uniformly distributed load it can
carry if ;the compressive and tensile stresses must not exceed 50 Mpa and respectively
Sketch a diagram showing the variation of bending stress at the mid span section of
the beam.
16. Figure below shows the section of a beam. If the bending stresse is not to exceed
30Mpa. Find the maximum bending moment the section can resist. Ans. 321798 N-cm.
17. A wooden beam 15 cm wide by 30cm deep is loaded as shown in figure below. If the
maximum flexural stress is 8 Mpa, find the maximum value of W and P that can be
applied simultaneously. (Ans. W = 9KN/m, P = 27KN. )
18. A box beam is composed of four planks, each 5cm by 20cm. Securely spoiled together
to from the section shown in fig. Below If w = 4.5KN/m, find P to cause a maximum
flexural stress of 10Mpa. (Ans. P = 25.074KN).
19. Solve problem (18) if w = 9KN/m. (Ans. P = 13.79KN).

20. A simply supported beam with overhang is loaded as shown in figure below. The
beanm is made of cast iron and has a T-section the flange of which is 10 cm wide and
the stem of which is 7.5cm deep. Flange and stem are each 2.5cm thick. Find the safe
value of the load P if the allowable working stresses for cast iron are 1 = 420 Kg/cm2
in tension and 0 = 700Kg/cm2 in compression. (Ans. P 434Kg)
21. A simply supported beam with overhand is loaded as shown in Fig. Below. The beam
has a heavy T- section and the flange of which is 22.5cm wide and the stem of which is
15 cm deep. Flange and stem are each 10 cm thick . Calculate the maximum tensile
stress and maximum compressive stress due to bending. Ans.1) max = 132kg/cm2
2) max = 96kg/cm2.
22. What is the required section modulus for the beam shown in figure below, If the
allowable bending stress is w = 84 kg/cm2?(Ans.z = 130cm2 ).
23. A rectangular wood beam is to be cut from a circular log. Calculate the ratio (b/n)
required to attain a beam of maximum strength in bendingh. (Ans;b/n = 1/21/2).
