Since last year, the EE Dept. is really performing well.

With Dr. B.K. Roy as HOD, the Dept. has received a
good 2 years of accreditation. Amongst other
departments, the work culture in this department
has improved a lot. A good number of faculty has
been recruited this year, surprisingly this year as
many as 5 PhD students have been recruited.
Moreover, a huge treasure has been granted for the development of the department. So yes,
according to me this department has huge scope for further development.

FROM THE HODS DESK

It is my immense pleasure to note that our electrical
engineering society is going to publish first newsletter,
ELECTRA INFO. I congratulate all on this memorable
moment of our department. Sustainability of any
development is a key factor. I wish that the present
endeavor will continue forever. A technical news-letter
reflects current developments, a requirement needs to be noted. Since it is the lone formal
publication, departmental activities are also to be reflected. I wish that contents will be
interesting, useful and finally readable. I wish all success of this noble attempt.

ELECTRONIC SCOREBOARDS: A SPORTS FANS BFF

A modern scoreboard is a fans best friend. It keeps the fan totally connected to the game by
not only showing a video of real time play but also of the replays in case you blinked an eye. It
informs the fan of all the statistics and strategies. Not only that, it is a good friend of the
stadium or team owners who make a profit by displaying ads.
What is a scoreboard?
According to Wikipedia A scoreboard is a large board for publicly displaying the score in a
game. Most levels of sport from high school and above use at least one scoreboard for keeping
score, measuring time, and displaying statistics. However most scoreboards now a days are
electrical and often scoreboards are used for a variety of purposes in addition to its traditional
uses.
History of electronic Scoreboard
In 1908, Chicago inventor George A. Braid developed an electric baseball scorecard. Initially
teams were hesitant. However slowly the electric scorecard became popular among fans. Prior
to 1980s most electronic scoreboards were electromechanical. They contained relays or
stepping switches controlling digits consisting of incandescent light bulbs. Beginning in 1980s
advances in solid state electronics led to the improvements in scoreboard technology. High
power semiconductors replaced mechanical relays, LEDs replaced conventional light bulbs. LEDs
last many times as long as light bulbs, are not subjected to breakage and are more efficient in
converting electrical energy to light. Advances in large scale integrated circuits permitted the
introduction of computer control. It also made it possible for existing AC wires to provide
power to the scoreboards.

Modern Scorecards
Technology of scoreboards took a different route with introduction of advertisement and video
mediums with electronic display boards. Electronic scoreboards do what normal scoreboards
dont that is grab attention. Even the recent developments in sporting world like the Goal
review system in football, the Decision Review System in cricket and the Hawk Eye challenge in
tennis are due to the fact that scoreboards play an important role in the fans life.
Conclusion
Theres no doubt that the digital age for sport the full color and high definition scorecard is a
must for all the leading stadiums. In sports, this is a win-win for everybody, the owners get a
better stadium and the fans are ecstatic. It's the first thing they see when they enter the seating
area and its those screens that helps them remember the memorable moments of their
favorite sporting events.

Has the car of the future arrived?

A brief insight into the life of Elon Musk and the Model S
Elon Musk is a self-made man, his first profitable venture came in the form of a
computer game Blaster he designed at the age of 12. The only child of an engineer
father and an author mother he completed initial schooling in Canada before
immigrating to America to study at University of Pennsylvania where after achieving a
degree in economics he went onto major in Physics.
He later moved onto Stanford University and within two days of joining the
course dropped out to move on to his first entrepreneurial venture Zip2 which was
later acquired by Compaq for 307 million dollars in 1999.
Later in 2002 Musk started X.com to create money streaming service between palm
pilots and made aggressive strides by acquiring Confinity Services which was a
market leader in online payments under the domain name of PayPal.
Musk recognized the potential in PayPal and legally renamed his company to PayPal
which was later acquired by e-commerce giant ebay for a net 1.5 billion dollars in
stock options.
Musk who had always been a strong advocate of clean energy saw the ebay
deal as his big chance and started the Tesla Motor Corporation in 2003 with a clear
aim of building high end luxury electric vehicles.
Years of hard work and cutting edge research culminated in the development of The
Model S an all-electric vehicle capable of giving its gasoline guzzling counterparts a run
for their money.
The Model S is capable of up to 300 miles on a single charge and with Tesla
coming up with its line of supercharging stations across the nation Tesla stocks are
going nowhere but up.
While rival car companies try to come up with new models every year to
lure customers to boost sales Tesla has gone a completely different route of ensuring
that the Model S patent technology such as the digital fuel injection, or the air
suspension system can be updated every time the car docks into a supercharging
station in the form of software patches inherently making the concept of upgrading
your car obsolete and moreover with the Model X in the pipelines aimed at the SUV
market Tesla is ready to take the automotive market by storm.
Zero advertising, zero discounts, zero patent protection (if used in good
faith) and sparse press notices. Teslas marketing and business model is certainly
novel and is going to make sure that Tesla Motor Corporation is in the automotive
market for the foreseeable future and Model S is definitely a car from the future.

POWER GRID FAILURE AND RECTIFICATION USING SMART GRID

SOLUTION
India suffered the world's biggest-ever power outage on 31st July, 2012 as transmission networks serving areas inhabited by 680 million collapsed, putting the nation's ramshackle
infrastructure on stark display.
The grid failure, the second massive blackout in as many days, happened around 1 p.m. local time and affected 18 states and two union territories in north and eastern India, grinding trains
across large swaths of the country to a halt, forcing thousands of hospitals and factories to operate on generators, temporarily stranding hundreds of coal miners underground and causing
losses to businesses estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
A number of issues have been thrown up by the recent grid disturbances and these include the following:
a) Skewed load generation balance across Regional grids.
b) Grid indiscipline including overdraws and under draws.
c) Failure of defence mechanisms.
d) Absence of primary response from generators.
e) Performance of the Protection Systems
The main cause of the grid failure as reported by CERN India was as follows Weak inter-regional power transmission corridors due to multiple existing outages (both scheduled and forced).
High loading on 400 kV BinaGwaliorAgra link.
Loss of 400 kV BinaGwalior link due to disoperation of its protection system.
Smart Grid Solutions: Smart grid generally refers to a class of technology people are using to bring utility electricity delivery systems into the 21st century, using computer-based remote
control and automation.
The grid amounts to the networks that carry electricity from the plants where it is generated to consumers. The grid includes wires, substations, transformers, switches and much more.
Much in the way that a smart phone these days means a phone with a computer in it, smart grid means computerizing the electric utility grid. It includes adding two-way digital
communication technology to devices associated with the grid.
A smarter grid applies technologies, tools and techniques available now to bring knowledge capable of making the grid work far more efficiently...
Ensuring its reliability to degrees never before possible.
Maintaining its affordability.
Reinforcing our global competitiveness.
Fully accommodating renewable and traditional energy sources.
Potentially reducing our carbon footprint.
Introducing advancements and efficiencies yet to be envisioned.
However implementation of the Smart Grid in a country having a network as big as India will take some time.
With the implementation of the new smart grid system, India can make its power supply as efficient as that of U.S.A i.e., 99.97%

NANOTECHNOLOGY MAKING
STRIDES IN THE FIELD OF MEDICINES

Sufficient amounts of sunlight reach the earth every minute to satisfy the entire worlds energy
demands for a year.
According to Google, the energy it takes to conduct 100 searches on its site is equivalent to a 60watt light bulb burning for 28 minutes.
The Three Gorges Dam in China is the world's largest hydroelectric power station.
A single wind turbine can power 500 homes.
It takes 6 billion, billion electrons to light a 100-watt light bulb for just 1 second .That is exactly 6,
000,000,000,000,000,000 electrons.
Wind farms currently produce enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 600,000 families.
The worlds biggest blackout occurred on August 14, 2004, when a massive power outage occurred
across the northeastern U.S. and throughout Ontario, Canada, affecting 50 million people.
We use 15 terawatts of electricity at any given moment.1 Terawatt can light 10 billion 100 watt
bulbs.
U.S.A consumes 25 % of world energy where Google accounts for roughly 0.013% of the worlds
energy use. It uses enough energy to continuously power 200,000 homes
The air within a lightning strike can reach 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit and its path can become five
times hotter than the surface of the sun.

To rebuild damaged parts of a human body from scratch is a dream that

has long fired the imagination of humans, from Mary Shelleys Doctor
Frankenstein to modern day surgeons. Now, a team of European scientists
has made a promising contribution to reconstructive surgery, thanks to
latest developments in nanotechnology. So what exactly is
nanotechnology?
Nano-technology is the manipulation of matter at the atomic and
molecular scale to create materials with remarkably varied and new
properties. The use of nanotechnology in medicine offers some exciting
possibilities. Some techniques are only imagined, while others are at
various levels of testing or actually being used today. The use of
nanotechnology could revolutionize the way we detect and treat damage
to the human body and disease in the future, and many techniques only
imagined a few years ago are making remarkable progress towards
becoming realities.
NANOTECHNOLOGY IN DRUG DELIVERY
One application of nanotechnology in medicine currently being developed
involves employing Nano particles to deliver drugs, heat, light or other
substances to specific types of cells. Particles are engineered so that they
are attracted to diseased cells, which allows direct treatment of those
cells.
NANOTECHNOLOGY IN THERAPY TECHNIQUES
Researchers have developed Nano sponges that absorb toxins and
remove them from the blood stream. The Nano sponges are polymer
nanoparticles coated with a red blood cell membrane. The red blood cell
membranes allows the Nano sponges to travel freely in the bloodstream
and attract the toxins.
NANOTECHNOLOGY IN DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES
Researchers at MIT have developed a sensor using carbon nanotubes
embedded in gel; that can be injected under the skin to monitor the level
of nitric oxide in the bloodstream. The level of nitric oxide is important
because it indicates inflammation, allowing easy monitoring of
inflammatory diseases.
NANOTECHNOLOGY IN CELL REPAIR
Imagine, for example, being able to stretch out a section of DNA like a
strand of spaghetti, so that you can examine and operate on it.
Nanotechnology is bringing that dream closer to reality.
However when technology advances rapidly knowledge about its safety
needs to keep pace in order for it to benefit.
