NATO NATIONAL COMMENTS


BGR - The Bulgarian Navy does not have through-deck ships and aircraft carrier
and there are no plans for procurement.
CZE - The Armed Forces of the Czech Republic do not have Navy. This CZE
reply is also valid for any RD of higher editions of this 5TANAG.
DNK - Denmark does not have any Through-Deck and Aircraft Carrier flight
decks therefore the STANAG is RATIFIED but will not be IMPLEMENTED.
EST - The Estonian Navy does not have aircraft carriers.
FRA - Markings will be brought into line with this standard on the planned
upgrading of the flight decks covered by the STANAG.
NLD - The Netherlands do not have through deck and aircraft carriers, now or in
the near future.
NOR - Norway does not possess ships in the category covered by STANAG
1484.
PRT - PRT does NOT PARTICIPATING due to lack to ships with this
characteristics.
ROU - Romanian Navy does not have in its inventory ships to meet the
specification of this standard. The provisions of STANAG 1484 (EDITION 1,
RD.1) will be used in the future for ships procurements plans.
SVK - There are no Naval Forces in the structure of the Armed Forces of the
Slovak Republic, no organizational branch, nor subject matter expert dealing
with the issue listed in this STANAG. This reply is also valid for any RD of higher
editions of this STANAG.
SVN - Slovenian Armed Forces develops limited naval capabilities therefore it
does not have means covered with this STANAG.

0101 Purpose
To establish minimum flight deck marking standards for all aircraft
carriers and through-deck aviation ships that support fixed wing
and/or rotary wing aircraft..
0102 Agreement
Participation nations agree to adopt the minimum standards of aircraft
carrier and through-deck flight deck markings specified herein.
Participating nations also agree to provide this data for incorporation
into the MPP-02.1 and MPP-02.1.1 (References (1) and (2)).
0103 Deck Markings
1. Aircraft spots on Through-Decks and Aircraft Carriers will be
defined by the following white markings (see Figure 1):
a. Line-up Line (solid or dashed fore and aft) - The lateral
reference point for aircraft touchdown. The pilot should touch
down when the line-up line is down the center of the aircraft.
b. Athwartships Line - The fore/aft pilot lineup line. Pilot
should follow host nation's national procedure for usage.
c. Spot Number/Letter - Block style numbered or lettered
(uppercase) from bow to stern. Location is next to spot (in
accordance with national standards) and large enough to be
visible to approaching aircraft. Number-letter combinations
may be used if required. Recommended minimum height of
block style number/letter is 91.4 CM (3 FT)
d. 45 Degree Line (recommended) - An optional reference
lines of longitudinal position right and/or left. 45 Degree Line
should intercept the Athwartships Line at the intended pilot or
aircraft position when on deck. Pilot should follow host
nation's national procedure for usage.
e. Mandatory Lines - All mandatory lines are white and a
minimum of 15.0 CM (0.5 FT) in width.

2. STOVL/VSTOL Aircraft Tramline/Runway Centre Line - A
white double line (solid or dashed) defining the launch lineup used
during short takeoffs. Includes distance markings (in feet) from
forward portion of STOVL/VSTOL flight deck.
3. Elevator/Lift outline will be defined by a solid, hashed or dashed
red and/or yellow line.
4. All painted markings shall conform to the coefficient of friction
requirements of STANAG 1278 (Reference (3)).
