The Complete University Guide 2012 ranks Biomedical Science at Lancaster third
in the UK and The Times Good University Guide ranks us fifth.
Our research expertise spans neurodegenerative disease, cancer biology,
microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, mental health and disability. The most
recent Research Assessment Exercise 2008 ranked Lancasters Biomedicine and
Life Sciences first in the UK and rated 95% of the research in The Division of Health
Research as being of international standing. Lancaster Medical School also has a
wide range of researchers of international standing working in a range of clinically
relevant areas.
Contemporary approaches to health and medicine demand expertise from a
combination of perspectives from medics, scientists and social scientists. So, we
bring together researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds to provide an

Your degree
Biochemistry examines the structure
and function of living organisms at
the molecular level. It is an exciting
and rapidly developing subject and
the primary investigative science
within biology and medicine.
The first year of your Biochemistry
degree involves core modules
such as Protein Biochemistry,
Cell Structure and Function, and
Genetics all designed to give you
a good overview of key modern
biochemical concepts. However,
at the same time, the first year of
your degree still permits flexibility
as you will also be able to choose an
additional five modules from any of
the Bioscience subjects on offer.
In the second year of your course,

Biomedical Science degree, with

four-year integrated masters. You
can enrol on either the MSci or the

degrees at a later stage. Progress/
transfer to the fourth year of the
MSci degree is subject to peer
competition and requires an overall
performance equivalent to upper
second class. Students failing to

Your degree course will help you

develop independent learning skills,
through problem-based learning, as
well as communication and clinical
skills. You will experience early patient
contact and can choose to study
abroad during your Elective or take
a year out from the programme
(between Years 4 and 5) to study a
medicine-related topic at BSc, MSc
or MPhil degree level.

Foundation of Medicine, where you
will learn key concepts in biomedical
and social science. Youll also choose
the first of four SSMs to study.
In addition to studying the core

medical curriculum, you can pursue
your own areas of interest through
four Special Study Modules (SSMs).
SSMs give you the opportunity to
select topics to study in more depth.
There is a wide range to choose from,
including basic Biomedical Science,

an opportunity for entry into medical education
for intellectually able individuals.
The course equips you with the
intellectual and practical skills
necessary for further study; prepares
you for potential entry to medical
school or direct second-year entry
to Bioscience degrees at Lancaster,
such as Biochemistry, Biological
Sciences and Natural Sciences, and
provides knowledge and experience
of careers within the NHS, through
a non-assessed educational
programme run by Morecambe
Bay NHS Trust.
There is potential for up to seven

students from this course to enter
the first year of the Liverpool
University MBChB medical degree,
studying at Lancaster or Liverpool.
Subsequent admission to the
medical degree is dependent on
academic performance on this
course and a successful Medical
School admissions interview.
