Armor Two or more layers of contra-helically applied API SPEC 17E


galvanised steel wires surrounding the laid-up
functional components of an umbilical. The wires
may be individually jacketed with a thermoplastic
polymer, or alternated with plastic rods of the same
diameter. The armor provides mechanical strength,
protection and ballast for the umbilical bundle. For
some applications, where tensile capability and
torque balance are not critical, one layer only of
armor may be acceptable.

Armoring One or more layers of helically applied wires API RP 17I


surrounding the laid-up functional components of
an umbilical that provide mechanical strength,
protection, and ballast to the umbilical. The wires
may be galvanised or plastic coated steel or other
suitable material.

Arrhenius plot Used to plot service life against the inverse of API RP 17B
temperature for some polymer materials by means
of a log-linear scale.

Attenuation Reduction in level of the transmission signal at the API SPEC 17E
transmission frequency. Measured in decibels (dB).

Attenuation A reduction in level of the transmission signal at a API RP 17I


transmission frequency. Measured in decibels (dB).

Basket Used for storage and transport of flexible pipe (all API RP 17B
pipes are laid freely into the basket).

Bellmouth A flared opening on the bottom of the J-tube. API RP 17I

Bellmouth Part of a guide tube, formed in the shape of a API SPEC 17J
bellmouth, and designed to prevent overbending of
the flexible pipe.

Bellmouth Part of a guide tube, formed in the shape of a API SPEC 17K
bellmouth, and designed to prevent overbending of
the flexible pipe.

Bellmouth Part of a guide tube, formed in the shape of a ISO13628-2


bellmouth and designed to prevent overbending of

Bend limiter Device for limiting the bend radius of the umbilical, API SPEC 17E
usually by mechanical means, typically comprising
a series of interlocking metal rings designed to lock
at a pre-defined radius.

Bend limiter Any device used to restrict bending of the flexible API SPEC 17J
pipe. Bend limiters includes bend restrictors, bend
stiffeners, and bellmouths.

measured from the pipe centreline. Storage and
operating MBRs are defined in 5.3.1.

Bend Radius The radius of curvature of the flexible pipe API SPEC 17K
measured from the pipe centerline. Storage and
operating Minimum Bend Radii are defined in
Sections 5.3.1.6 and 5.3.1.7.

Bend Radius Radius of curvature of the flexible pipe measured ISO13628-2


to the pipe centreline.
NOTE: Storage and operating MBRs are defined in
5.3.1.6 and 5.3.1.7

Bend Radius Radius of curvature as measured to the centreline ISO 13628-3


of a conduit.

Bend Restrictor A device for limiting the bend radius of the API RP 17I
umbilical, usually by mechanical means, and
typically comprised of a series of interlocking metal
or molded rings. That is also known as a bend
limiter.

Bend restrictor A mechanical device that functions as a API SPEC 17J


mechanical stop and limits the local radius of
curvature of the flexible pipe to a minimum value.

Bend Restrictor A mechanical device that functions as a API SPEC 17K


mechanical stop and limits the local radius of

Bend Shoe A rigid former shaped as a sector of a circle. It API RP 17I


ensures that the minimum bend radius of the
umbilical is not infringed, particularly when
overboarding umbilical during second end I or J-
tube pull-ins. That is also known as an arch or
overboarding chute.

Bend stiffener Device for providing bending strain relief for the API SPEC 17E
umbilical by providing localised increase in
stiffness. Usually a molded device, sometimes
reinforced depending on the required duty, applied
over the umbilical. Sometimes referred to as a
bend strain reliever.

Bend Stiffener A device for limiting the bend radius of the umbilical API RP 17I
by providing a local increase in bending stiffness.
This is usually a molded device, sometimes
reinforced depending on the required duty. This is
sometimes known as a bend strain reliever.

Bend stiffener Ancillary conically shaped component, which API SPEC 17J
locally supports the pipe to limit bending stresses
and curvature of the pipe to acceptance levels.
Bend stiffeners can be either attached to an end
fitting or a support structure where the flexible pipe
passes through the bend stiffener.

an umbilical is analogous to the structural stiffness
of a rigid steel beam or steel pipe (modulus of
elasticity x second area moment of inertia), except
it can vary with temperature and pressure levels
within hoses. There can also be a significant level
of hysteresis, due to the materials of construction.
Quantified as the product of applied bending
modulus x resultant bend radius of the umbilical.
Expressed as kN.m 2 .

Bending stiffness Bending stiffness in a flexible pipe is analogous to API SPEC 17J
the structural stiffness of a rigid beam or pipe
(modulus of elasticity times the second area

can vary to a large extent with temperature and
pressure. It is often quantified as the product of an

Birdcaging Buckling of the tensile armour wires, which results API RP 17B
in Significant radial deformation. It is usually
caused by extreme axial compression.

Birdcaging A compressive instability of the armor wires, which API RP 17I


causes them to increase their pitch circle diameter
locally.

Bird-caging Phenomenon whereby armour wires locally ISO 13628-5


rearrange with an increase and/or decrease in pitch
circle diameter resulting from accumulated axial
and radial stresses in the armour layer(s).

Bonded Pipe A flexible pipe in which the steel reinforcement is API SPEC 17J
integrated and bonded to a Vulcanised elastomeric
material. Textile material is included in the structure
to obtain additional structural reinforcement or to
separate elastomeric layers.

Bonded Pipe A flexible pipe where the steel reinforcement is API SPEC 17K

Boost Pressure maintained on the spring-return side of a ISO 13628-6


subsea actuator for the purposes of improving
closing-time response.

Bore Internal diameter of the hose liner, used API SPEC 17E
dimensionally to denote hose size.

Bore Protector A device which protects internal bore surfaces API SPEC 17D
during drilling or workover operations.

Bore Protector Device which protects internal bore surfaces during ISO 13628-4
drilling or workover operations.

Breaker A textile layer impregnated with rubber included in API SPEC 17K
various layers in the pipe cross section to give
additional strength to the pipe, to aid in reducing
propagation of cuts in the pipe and to aid the
manufacturing process. This layer may be
incorporated into either or all of the Cover,
Reinforcing Layer and Liner.

Breaking tenacity Term expressing the breaking force of hose API SPEC 17E
reinforcement yarn per unit linear density and
expressed in mN/tex, where one tex is the mass in
grams of 1,000 meters of yarn.

Built-in end fitting Attachment secured directly to the end, or close to API SPEC 17E
the end of an umbilical, to enable the umbilical to
be mechanically anchored so as to resist tensile
loads and/or bending moments. The attachment
may incorporate a bend stiffener and is typically
located at an I/J-tube hang-off or vessel exit point.

Bullnose See pull-in head (3.1.48). API RP 17I

Bundle Laid-up functional components (hoses, electrical API SPEC 17E


cables, optical fibre cables) and associated fillers in
the umbilical prior to sheathing.

Bundle Laid-up functional components (hoses, tubes, ISO 13628-5


electric cables, optical fibre cables) and associated
fillers in the umbilical prior to sheathing.

Buoyancy module A buoy used in significant numbers at discrete API RP 17B


points over a section of riser to achieve wave
shape riser configurations (see 4.5.6). See also
definition for subsea buoy.

Burst disk Weak points in the outer sheath designed to burst API SPEC 17J
when the gas pressure in the annulus exceeds a
specified value. The weak point is induced by
reducing the thickness of the sheath over a
localised area.

when the gas pressure in the annulus exceeds a
specified value.

Cable Generic term used to describe a group of elec- API SPEC 17E
tric cores or optical fibres bundled together. The
electrical cores may be taped and/or jacketed to
maintain stability and mechanical protection. The
fibres may be bundled loosely in a tube or
individually in a slotted carrier which is over-
sheathed for mechanical protection. (See Appendix
C Figures 2 and 3).

Cable A generic term used to describe a bundle of API RP 17I


insulated electrical conductors or optical fibres.
Can also be used in place of the term umbilical.

Cable A series of round wires of steel or fabric (circular API SPEC 17K
cross-section) spirally wound (stranded) together
and used for structurally reinforcing the pipe.
Cable wires for flexible pipes are usually brass or
copper coated to promote chemical bonding of the
elastomer to the wires.

Cable Engine A device for tensioning and paying out cable. API RP 17I

Calendering The process of passing elastomer compound API SPEC 17K


between rollers to produce smooth sheets of
elastomer. This process is also used to cover
reinforcing cables and textiles with elastomer to
form sheets for winding onto pipes.

Capacitance Measurement of the ability of an electrical cable to API SPEC 17E


store electrostatic charge when potential
differences exist between the conductors.
Measured in Farads.

Capacitance A measurement of the electrical cable’s ability to API RP 17I


store electrostatic charge. This is measured in
Farads.

Carcass An interlocked metallic construction that can be API SPEC 17J


used as the innermost layer to prevent, totally or
partially, collapse of the internal pressure sheath or
pipe due to pipe decompression, external pressure,
tensile armor pressure, and mechanical crushing
loads. It may be used externally to protect the
external surface of the pipe.

Carcass Interlocked metallic construction that can be used ISO13628-2


as the innermost layer to prevent total or partial
collapse of the internal pressure sheath or pipe due
to pipe decompression, external pressure, tensile
armour pressure and mechanical crushing loads.
NOTE: It may be used externally to protect the
external surface of the pipe.

Carousel Used for storage and transport of flexible pipe in API RP 17B
very long lengths and rotates about a vertical axis.
Pipe is wound under tension around the centre
hub.

Carousel A storage container that can be rotated by a drive API RP 17I


about a vertical axis. It incorporates an inner core
structure and an outer peripheral structure, both of
which support the umbilical. The umbilical is stored
at nominally zero tension. Carousels that do not
have a structure on their outer periphery to support
the umbilical are often known as turntables.

Carousel Storage container which can be rotated by a drive ISO 13628-5


about a vertical axis.
NOTE: It incorporates an inner core structure and
an outer peripheral structure, both of which support
the umbilical. The umbilical is stored at nominally
zero tension. Carousels which do not have a
structure on their outer periphery to support the
umbilical are often known as turntables.

Caterpillar Form of cable engine in which the umbilical is held API RP 17I
between two belts.

Caterpillar Cable engine in which the umbilical is held ISO 13628-5


between belts which transfer motive power to the
umbilical.

Characterisation Data Data relating to a component or an umbilical giving ISO 13628-5


an indication of performance but not giving specific
accept/reject criteria.

Characteristic impedance AC voltage/current ratio at any point along a API SPEC 17E
transmission line. Measured in Ohms.

Check Valve A device designed to restrict flow in one direction. API SPEC 17D

Chinese finger Type of gripper or stopper to hold the umbilical via API RP 17I
its outside diameter; comprised of a number of

Chinese Finger Type of gripper or stopper to hold the umbilical via ISO 13628-5
its outer diameter, comprising a number of spirally
interwoven wires attached to an in-built anchorage
arrangement.

Chinese fingers A woven steel wire or fabric sleeve that can be API RP 17B
installed over a flexible pipe and drawn tight to grip
it for support or applying tension to the pipe.

Chinese lantern Riser configuration used in shallow water offshore API RP 17B
loading systems to connect a PLEM to a buoy
directly above it. The upper and lower connections
are vertical and excess riser length is supported by
distributed buoyancy. See Figure 4.

Chinese lantern A configuration for a dynamic umbilical. API RP 17I

Choke and Kill Line Flexible pipe jumper located between choke API SPEC 17J
manifold and blow-out preventer.

Choke and Kill Line Flexible pipe jumper located between choke API SPEC 17K
manifold and blow-out preventer.

Choke and Kill Line Flexible pipe jumper located between a choke ISO13628-2
manifold and a blow-out preventer.

Circulation Control Valve Valve normally placed across the circulation point ISO 13628-3
to allow isolation of the tubing strings or
tubingkasing during production.

Circulation Control Valve A valve normally placed across the circulation point API RP 17C
(CCV) to allow isolation of the tubing strings or tubing/
casing during production.

Circulation Point That location where communication is established API RP 17C


between supply and return fluids for TFL servicing.

Circulation Point Location where communication is established ISO 13628-3


between supply and return fluids for TFL servicing.

Client The company which has a contract with the API RP 17I
installer for the installation of the umbilical.

Coaxial cable Cable for the transmission of signal data of low to API SPEC 17E
high frequency. The conductor pair is arranged
concentrically with an annulus of di-electric material
between the conductors.

Completion Riser A riser that is designed to fit inside a BOP to allow API SPEC 17D
installation of a tubing hanger, and may also be
suitable for connection to the tree upper connection
for use as a means for running the tree or for use
as a workover riser (see workover riser).

Completion Riser Riser that is designed to fit inside a BOP to allow ISO 13628-4
installation of a tubing hanger, and may also be
suitable for connection to the tree upper connection
for use as a means for running the tree or for use
as a workover riser.

Completion workover riser The temporary riser used during completion or API RP 17G
(C m O riser) workover operations.

Components Hoses and electrical cables incorporated in API SPEC 17E


umbilicals. May also include optical fibre cables.

Compound The name given to the mix of elastomer material API SPEC 17K
and various additives immediately prior to the
curing process.

Concentric Bore Tubing A tubing hanger where the production bore is API SPEC 17D
Hanger concentric with the O.D. of the hanger, normally
requiring no orientation during installation.

Conductor Rod of conductive metal. In an electric cable a API SPEC 17E


conductor refers to a conductive material, such as
copper in either stranded or solid form used to
transmit electrical power and/or electrical
communications.

Conductor The part of the cable along which electricity can API RP 17I
travel. It is manufactured from conductive material,
such as copper, in either stranded, multi-bunched,
or solid form.

Conductor Housing The top of the first casing string which forms the API SPEC 17D
basic foundation of the subsea wellhead and
provides attachments for guidance structures.

Conductor Housing Top of the first casing string which forms the basic ISO 13628-4
foundation of the subsea wellhead and provides
attachments for guidance structures.

Conductor resistance Linear resistance of an electrical conductor to a API SPEC 17E


direct current. Measured in Ohms.

electrically insulated conductor. (See Appendix C,
Figure 1).

Core Generic term used to describe an individual ISO 13628-5


electrically insulated conductor.

Corrosion Cap A cap placed over the wellhead to protect it from API SPEC 17D
contamination by debris, marine growth, or
corrosion during temporary abandonment of the
well.

Corrosion Cap Cap placed over the wellhead to protect it from ISO 13628-4
contamination by debris, marine growth, or
corrosion during temporary abandonment of the
well.

Corrosion Resistant Alloys Non ferrous alloys where any one or the s u m of API SPEC 17D
(CM) the specified amount of the following alloy
elements exceeds 50%: titanium, nickel, cobalt,
chromium, and molybdenum.

Corrosion Resistant Materials Ferrous or non ferrous alloys which are more API SPEC 17D
(CRM) corrosion resistant than low alloy steels. This term
includes CRA's, duplex, and stainless steels.

Cover A layer of elastomer between the reinforcing layer API SPEC 17K
and the external environment (or external carcass if
provided) used to protect the pipe against
penetration of seawater and other external
environments, corrosion, abrasion and mechanical
damage.

Crab Lay Installation deployment activity whereby the ISO 13628-5


installation vessel moves sideways along, or at the
end of, the installation route.

Crimping Method of attaching a coupling or end fitting to a API SPEC 17E


hose by compressing the coupling/fitting abutment
with a radially applied load generally by means of a
segmented die arrangement. (See Appendix B,
Figure 1). Also applies to an abutment which is
non-circular in cross-section (e.g. hexagonal), and
is compressed by means of a two-part die of the
same cross-sectional form, but with reduced
dimensions.

Crossing The means by which an umbilical crosses an API RP 17I


exposed pipeline.

Crossover A flexible flowline crossing another pipe already API SPEC 17J
laid on the seabed. The underlying pipe may be a
steel pipe or another flexible pipe. It may be
required to support the overlying pipe to prevent
overbending or crushing of the new or existing
pipes.

laid on the seabed. The underlying pipe may be a

Cross-talk Trespass of electrical energy from one electrical API SPEC 17E
circuit to another. Measured as a power ratio in two
configurations:
a.) Differential Mode - measured between cores in
a pair.
b.) Common Mode - measured between cores and
screen. Expressed in decibels (dB).

Cross-talk The measurement of noise induced in a signal API RP 17I


cable due to an adjacent power cable. This is
measured as a power ratio in two ways:
a. Differential Mode-measured difference between
