DEFINITIONS
Ancillary components Components used to control the flexible-pipe API SPEC 17J

generally free to move and mix in the annulus.
Annulus Seal Assembly A mechanism which provides pressure isolation API SPEC 17D
between each casing hanger and the wellhead
housing.
Annulus Seal Aassembly Mechanism which provides pressure isolation ISO 13628-4
between each casing hanger and the wellhead
housing.
Anti-wear layer Nonmetallic layer, either extruded thermoplastic API SPEC 17J
sheath or tape wrapping, used to minimise wear
between structural layers.
API monogram Registered mark of the American Petroleum API SPEC 17E
Institute.

API Monogram A registered mark of the American Petroleum API SPEC 17K
Institute.
Arrhenius plot Used to plot service life against the inverse of API RP 17B
temperature for some polymer materials by means
of a log-linear scale.
Attenuation Reduction in level of the transmission signal at the API SPEC 17E
transmission frequency. Measured in decibels (dB).
Basket Used for storage and transport of flexible pipe (all API RP 17B
pipes are laid freely into the basket).
Bellmouth Part of a guide tube, formed in the shape of a API SPEC 17J
bellmouth, and designed to prevent overbending of
the flexible pipe.
Bellmouth Part of a guide tube, formed in the shape of a API SPEC 17K
bellmouth, and designed to prevent overbending of
the flexible pipe.
Bend limiter Device for limiting the bend radius of the umbilical, API SPEC 17E
usually by mechanical means, typically comprising
a series of interlocking metal rings designed to lock
at a pre-defined radius.
Bend limiter Any device used to restrict bending of the flexible API SPEC 17J
pipe. Bend limiters includes bend restrictors, bend
stiffeners, and bellmouths.

Bend radius The radius of curvature of the flexible pipe API SPEC 17J
measured from the pipe centreline. Storage and
operating MBRs are defined in 5.3.1.
Bend Radius The radius of curvature of the flexible pipe API SPEC 17K
measured from the pipe centerline. Storage and
operating Minimum Bend Radii are defined in
Sections 5.3.1.6 and 5.3.1.7.
Bend Restrictor A device for limiting the bend radius of the API RP 17I
umbilical, usually by mechanical means, and
typically comprised of a series of interlocking metal
or molded rings. That is also known as a bend
limiter.

Bend stiffener Device for providing bending strain relief for the API SPEC 17E
umbilical by providing localised increase in
stiffness. Usually a molded device, sometimes
reinforced depending on the required duty, applied
over the umbilical. Sometimes referred to as a
bend strain reliever.
Bend Stiffener A device for limiting the bend radius of the umbilical API RP 17I
by providing a local increase in bending stiffness.
This is usually a molded device, sometimes
reinforced depending on the required duty. This is
sometimes known as a bend strain reliever.
Bend stiffener Ancillary conically shaped component, which API SPEC 17J
locally supports the pipe to limit bending stresses
and curvature of the pipe to acceptance levels.
Bend stiffeners can be either attached to an end
fitting or a support structure where the flexible pipe
passes through the bend stiffener.

Bending stiffness Bending stiffness in a flexible pipe is analogous to API SPEC 17J
the structural stiffness of a rigid beam or pipe
(modulus of elasticity times the second area
moment of inertia), except that bending stiffness
can vary to a large extent with temperature and
pressure. It is often quantified as the product of an
applied bending moment times the resultant bend
radius of the pipe.
Bending Stiffness Bending stiffness in a flexible pipe is analogous to API SPEC 17K
the structural stiffness of a rigid beam or pipe
(modulus of elasticity times the second area
moment of inertia), except that it can vary to a large
extent with temperature and pressure. It is often
quantified as the product of an applied bending
moment times the resultant bend radius of the pipe.
Birdcaging Buckling of the tensile armour wires, which results API RP 17B
in Significant radial deformation. It is usually
caused by extreme axial compression.
Bonded Pipe A flexible pipe in which the steel reinforcement is API SPEC 17J
integrated and bonded to a Vulcanised elastomeric
material. Textile material is included in the structure
to obtain additional structural reinforcement or to
separate elastomeric layers.

Bonded Pipe A flexible pipe where the steel reinforcement is API SPEC 17K
integrated and bonded to a vulcanised elastomeric
material. Textile material is included in the structure
to obtain additional structural reinforcement or to
separate elastomeric layers.
Bore Internal diameter of the hose liner, used API SPEC 17E
dimensionally to denote hose size.
Bore Protector A device which protects internal bore surfaces API SPEC 17D
during drilling or workover operations.
Bore Protector Device which protects internal bore surfaces during ISO 13628-4
drilling or workover operations.
Breaker A textile layer impregnated with rubber included in API SPEC 17K
various layers in the pipe cross section to give
additional strength to the pipe, to aid in reducing
propagation of cuts in the pipe and to aid the
manufacturing process. This layer may be
incorporated into either or all of the Cover,
Reinforcing Layer and Liner.
Breaking tenacity Term expressing the breaking force of hose API SPEC 17E
reinforcement yarn per unit linear density and
expressed in mN/tex, where one tex is the mass in
grams of 1,000 meters of yarn.
Built-in end fitting Attachment secured directly to the end, or close to API SPEC 17E
the end of an umbilical, to enable the umbilical to
be mechanically anchored so as to resist tensile
loads and/or bending moments. The attachment
may incorporate a bend stiffener and is typically
located at an I/J-tube hang-off or vessel exit point.

Burst disk Weak points in the outer sheath designed to burst API SPEC 17J
when the gas pressure in the annulus exceeds a
specified value. The weak point is induced by
reducing the thickness of the sheath over a
localised area.
Cable Generic term used to describe a group of elec- API SPEC 17E
tric cores or optical fibres bundled together. The
electrical cores may be taped and/or jacketed to
maintain stability and mechanical protection. The
fibres may be bundled loosely in a tube or
individually in a slotted carrier which is over-
sheathed for mechanical protection. (See Appendix
C Figures 2 and 3).
Cable A series of round wires of steel or fabric (circular API SPEC 17K
cross-section) spirally wound (stranded) together
and used for structurally reinforcing the pipe.
Cable wires for flexible pipes are usually brass or
copper coated to promote chemical bonding of the
elastomer to the wires.
Cable Engine A device for tensioning and paying out cable. API RP 17I

Carousel Used for storage and transport of flexible pipe in API RP 17B
very long lengths and rotates about a vertical axis.
Pipe is wound under tension around the centre
hub.
Caterpillar Form of cable engine in which the umbilical is held API RP 17I
between two belts.
Characteristic impedance AC voltage/current ratio at any point along a API SPEC 17E
transmission line. Measured in Ohms.
Check Valve A device designed to restrict flow in one direction. API SPEC 17D
Check Valve Device designed to restrict flow in one direction. ISO 13628-4

Chinese finger Type of gripper or stopper to hold the umbilical via API RP 17I
its outside diameter; comprised of a number of
spirally interwoven wires attached to an eye. Other
types include Siemens Stoppers, Chain Stoppers
and BT(M) Stoppers.
Chinese Finger Type of gripper or stopper to hold the umbilical via ISO 13628-5
its outer diameter, comprising a number of spirally
interwoven wires attached to an in-built anchorage
arrangement.
Chinese fingers A woven steel wire or fabric sleeve that can be API RP 17B
installed over a flexible pipe and drawn tight to grip
it for support or applying tension to the pipe.
Chinese lantern Riser configuration used in shallow water offshore API RP 17B
loading systems to connect a PLEM to a buoy
directly above it. The upper and lower connections
are vertical and excess riser length is supported by
distributed buoyancy. See Figure 4.
Choke and Kill Line Flexible pipe jumper located between choke API SPEC 17J
manifold and blow-out preventer.

casing during production.
Client The company which has a contract with the API RP 17I
installer for the installation of the umbilical.
Coaxial cable Cable for the transmission of signal data of low to API SPEC 17E
high frequency. The conductor pair is arranged
concentrically with an annulus of di-electric material
between the conductors.

Commanded Closure Closure of the underwater safety valve and ISO 13628-6
possibly other valves depending on the control
system design
NOTE Such commands may originate manually,
automatically or as part of an ESD.
Completion Riser A riser that is designed to fit inside a BOP to allow API SPEC 17D
installation of a tubing hanger, and may also be
suitable for connection to the tree upper connection
for use as a means for running the tree or for use
as a workover riser (see workover riser).
Completion Riser Riser that is designed to fit inside a BOP to allow ISO 13628-4
installation of a tubing hanger, and may also be
suitable for connection to the tree upper connection
for use as a means for running the tree or for use

Completion workover riser The temporary riser used during completion or API RP 17G
(C m O riser) workover operations.
Compound The name given to the mix of elastomer material API SPEC 17K
and various additives immediately prior to the
curing process.
Concentric Bore Tubing A tubing hanger where the production bore is API SPEC 17D
Hanger concentric with the O.D. of the hanger, normally
requiring no orientation during installation.
Conductor The part of the cable along which electricity can API RP 17I
travel. It is manufactured from conductive material,
such as copper, in either stranded, multi-bunched,
or solid form.
Conductor Housing The top of the first casing string which forms the API SPEC 17D
basic foundation of the subsea wellhead and
provides attachments for guidance structures.

foundation of the subsea wellhead and provides
attachments for guidance structures.

Connector A device used to join two electrical cables or two API RP 17I
optical units.
Connector A device used to provide a leak tight structural API SPEC 17J
connection between the end fitting and adjacent
piping. Connectors include bolted flanges, clamped
hubs, and proprietary connectors. They may be
designed for diver assisted makeup or for diverless
operation using either mechanical or hydraulic
apparatus.

contamination by debris, marine growth, or
corrosion during temporary abandonment of the
well.

Corrosion Resistant Alloys Non ferrous alloys where any one or the s u m of API SPEC 17D

chromium, and molybdenum.
Corrosion Resistant Materials Ferrous or non ferrous alloys which are more API SPEC 17D
(CRM) corrosion resistant than low alloy steels. This term
includes CRA's, duplex, and stainless steels.

Corrosion-resistant Alloys Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys which are more ISO 13628-4

Coupling Device used to splice two hose lengths together. API SPEC 17E
(See Appendix B, Figure 4).
Cover A layer of elastomer between the reinforcing layer API SPEC 17K
and the external environment (or external carcass if
provided) used to protect the pipe against
penetration of seawater and other external
environments, corrosion, abrasion and mechanical
damage.
Crossover A flexible flowline crossing another pipe already API SPEC 17J
laid on the seabed. The underlying pipe may be a
steel pipe or another flexible pipe. It may be
required to support the overlying pipe to prevent
overbending or crushing of the new or existing
pipes.

Cross-talk Trespass of electrical energy from one electrical API SPEC 17E
circuit to another. Measured as a power ratio in two
configurations:
a.) Differential Mode - measured between cores in
a pair.
b.) Common Mode - measured between cores and
screen. Expressed in decibels (dB).
Deployment System All equipment involved in the launch and recovery ISO 13628-9
of the ROT system.
Depth Rating The maximum rated working depth of a piece of API SPEC 17D
equipment at a given set of operating conditions.
Design life Specified period of time during which the umbilical API SPEC 17E
shall fulfil its performance requirements.

Design plan Schedule of design and qualification activities API SPEC 17E
identifying the stages at which Manufacturer,
Purchaser, Third Parties or Independent
Inspectorates are involved and, additionally,
identifying the specifications involved, procedures,
acceptance criteria and instructions that are
relevant.
Design Pressure The minimum or maximum pressure, inclusive of API SPEC 17J
operating pressure, surge pressure including shut-
in pressure where applicable, vacuum conditions
and static pressure head.
Design Pressure The minimum or maximum pressure, inclusive of API SPEC 17K
operating pressure, surge pressure including shut-
in pressure where applicable, vacuum conditions

Design Pressure Pressure which is equal to or greater than the ISO 13628-6

Direct Hydraulic Control Control method wherein hydraulic pressure is ISO 13628-6
applied through an umbilical line to act directly on a
subsea valve actuator.
NOTE: Upon venting of the pressure at the surface,
the control fluid is returned through the umbilical to
the surface due to the action of the restoring spring
in the valve actuator. Subsea functions may be
ganged together to reduce the number of umbilical
lines.
Downstream Direction of movement away from the reservoir. API SPEC 17D
Downstream Direction away from the source of pressure or flow. ISO 13628-6
Drain wire Conductor placed in contact with an electrical API SPEC 17E
screen to improve and maintain the electrical
continuity of the screen. (Generally used in
conjunction with metallized plastic film screens).

Dynamic analysis An analysis undertaken of an umbilical system that API SPEC 17E
will be subject to continuous dynamic excitation to
help ensure that the system is designed, installed
and operated safely and reliably. The results of
analysis, typical histories of forces, moments,
displacements, stresses, curvatures, deformations
may be used in the design phase for checking and
refining the proposed system design and
determining proper installation procedures. The
analysis may be combined with the interaction
analysis of other subsea systems such as adjacent
dynamic umbilical systems and/or dynamic
production risers. Used to determine the motion
envelope of the umbilical with respect to other
elements (risers, anchor chains, buoys, etc.).
Dynamic Application Flexible pipe is exposed to cyclically varying loads API SPEC 17J
and deflections during normal operation. The pipe
is specially constructed to withstand a large
number of bending/tensile/torsional cycles.
Dynamic Application Service in which flexible pipe is exposed to API SPEC 17K
cyclically varying loads and deflections during
normal operation. The pipe is specially constructed
to withstand a large number of bending/tensile/
torsional cycles.
Electrohydraulic Control Control method wherein electrical signals are ISO 13628-6
conducted to the subsea system and used to open
or close electrically-controlled hydraulic control
valves
NOTE: Hydraulic fluid is locally sourced and acts
on the associated subsea valve actuator. "Locally
sourced" may mean locally stored pressurized fluid
or fluid supplied by a hydraulic umbilical line. With
electrohydraulic control systems, data telemetry
(readback) is readily available at high speed.
Multiplexing of the electrical signals reduces the
number of conductors in the electrical umbilical.
End fitting Attachment secured directly to the end of hose API SPEC 17E
incorporating one half of a metal-metal seal, used
to enable connection of the hose to another piece
of equipment.

End Fitting A mechanical device which forms the transition API SPEC 17J
between the flexible pipe body and the connector.
The different pipe layers are terminated in the end
fitting in such a way as to transfer the load between
the flexible pipe and the connector.
End termination Mechanical fitting attached to the end of an API SPEC 17E
umbilical which provides a means of transferring
installation and operating loads, fluid and electrical
services to a mating assembly mounted on the
subsea installation or surface facility.
Extension Sub Sealing tubular member that provides tree bore API SPEC 17D
continuity between adjacent tree components.
Extension Sub Sealing tubular member that provides tree bore ISO 13628-4
continuity between adjacent tree components.
Factory acceptance test The test series carried out on the complete API RP 17I
umbilical system and normally witnessed by the
client at the manufacturer’s premises as soon as
practicable after manufacture is complete. The
results of these tests are submitted to the client for
approval.
Factory acceptance test A test conducted by the manufacturer to verify that API RP 17G
(FAT) the manufacture of a specific assembly meets all
intended functional and operational requirements.
Factory Acceptance Test Series of tests carried out on the complete ISO 13628-5
(FAT) umbilical system after manufacture is complete, to
verify the integrity of the umbilical.

Fail Closed Valve An actuated valve designed to fail to the closed API SPEC 17D
position.
Fail Closed Valve Actuated valve designed to fail to the closed ISO 13628-4

Fail Open Valve Actuated valve designed to fail to the open ISO 13628-4

First End Connect2on The connection in ade a the initiation of the pipe API SPEC 17D
laying process.

Fishscaling The tendency of one tensile armor wire edge to lift API SPEC 17J

Flexible Flowline A flexible pipe, wholly or in part, resting on the API SPEC 17J
seafloor or buried below the seafloor, and used in a
static application. The term flowline is used in this
document as a generic term for flexible flowlines.
Flexible Pipe An assembly of a pipe body and end fittings. The API SPEC 17J
pipe body comprises a composite of layered
materials that form a pressure-containing conduit.
The pipe structure allows large deflections without
a significant increase in bending stresses. Normally
the pipe body is built up as a composite structure
comprising metallic and polymer layers. The term
pipe is used in this document as a generic term for
flexible pipe.
Flexible pipe system A fluid conveyance system for which the flexible API RP 17B
pipe(s) is the primary component and includes
ancillary components attached directly or indirectly
to the pipe.

Floating vessel An offshore drilling structure that floats and is not API RP 17G
secured to the seafloor except by means of il
anchors. Semisubmersible drilling rigs and drill
ships are floating vessels.
Flow Loops Piping which connects the outlet(s) of the subsea API SPEC 17D
tree to the subsea flowline connection and/or to
other tree piping. connections (crossover piping,
etc.).
Flow Loops Piping which connects the outlet(s) of the subsea ISO 13628-4
tree to the subsea flowline connection and/or to
other tree piping connections (crossover piping,
etc.)
Flowline Any pipeline connecting to the subsea tree API SPEC 17D
assembly.
Flowline Connector Support A structural frame which receives and supports the API SPEC 17D
Frame flowline connector and transfers flowline loads back
into the wellhead structure.
Flowline Connector Support Structural frame which receives and supports the ISO 13628-4
Frame flowline connector and transfers flowline loads back
into the wellhead or seabed anchored structure.
Flowline Connector System The equipment used to attach subsea pipelines API SPEC 17D
and/or control umbilicals to a subsea tree. The
system may include means to guide the end of the
pipeline or umbilical into place and may include
remote connection or disconnection capability.
Flowline Connector System Equipment used to attach subsea pipelines and/or ISO 13628-4
control umbilicals to a subsea tree.

Flowline Signature Particular set of pressure pulses (spikes) read or ISO 13628-3
Service Line Signature recorded at the surface that identifies a certain
point in the service/flowline or well as tools are
pumped past.
Functional Components Components included within an umbilical which are ISO 13628-5
required to fulfil the operational service needs.
EXAMPLES: Hoses, tubes, electric/optical fibre
cables.
Functional specification Document that specifies the totality of needs API SPEC 17E
expressed by features, characteristics, process
conditions, boundaries and exclusions defining the
performance of a product or service including QA
requirements.
Functional Specification Document that specifies the totality of needs ISO 13628-5
expressed by features, characteristics, process
conditions, boundaries and exclusions defining the

Guide Funnel Tapered enlargement at the end of a guidance API SPEC 17D
member to provide primary guidance over another
guidance member.
Guide Lineless Systems Systems which do not depend on the ISO 13628-4
establishment of guide lines from the seafloor to
the surface vessel for guidance and alignment of
subsea equipment during installation, operation,
intervention, or retrieval.
Guide Lines Taut lines from the seafloor to the surface for the ISO 13628-4
purpose of guiding equipment to the seafloor
structure.
Guidelineless Systems Systems which do not depend on the API SPEC 17D
establishment of guidelines from the sea- floor to
the surface vessel for guidance and alignment of
subsea equipment during installation, operation,
intervention] or retrieval.
