--1 .a) A circular rod of steel 12mm diameter is testing in a testing machine and it is
found that when the tension is 16kN the total extension on a 20cm length is
0.14mm.Find the value of E.
b) Explain stress-strain diagram for ductile materials

2. A beam AB 5m long is simply supported at A and B. It is loaded with point loads
of 20kN, 30kN and 20kNat distances of 1m, 3m and 4mrespectively from the
support A, and a uniformly distributed load at the rate of 20kN/m over the length of
2m, the beginning of the U.D.L. being at the of 2m from A. Draw the B.M and S.F.
diagrams, indicating the principal values

3. a) A beam of symmetrical section 30cm deep and I= 12000cm4, carries U.D.L. of
16kN/m.Calculate the maximum span of the beam if the maximum bending stress
is not to exceed160N/mm2. With this span, calculate the maximum central load if
the bending stress is not to exceed the limit given above.
b) Explain theory of simple bending

The cross-section of a joist is a tee-section 150mm100mm13mmwith 150mm


side horizontal. Find the maximum intensity of shear stress and sketch the
distribution of stress across the section if it has to resist a shear force of 80kN.[16]

5 A beam, simply supported at ends A and B is loaded with two point loads of 60 k N
and 50 k N at distance 1 m and 3 m respectively from end A. Determine the
position and magnitude of maximum deflection. Take E=2X105 N/ mm2 and
I=8500 cm4

6. a). A cylindrical shell is 3metre long, 1metre is internal diameter and 15mm metal
thickness. Calculate the maximum intensity of shear stress induced and also the
changes in the dimensions of the shell if it is subjected to an internal pressure of
1.5 N/mm2. Take E = 0.204106 N/mm2 and 1/m = 0.3.
b) Derive stresses in thin cylinders.

7. 26. A compound cylinder, formed by shrinking one tube on to another, is subjected
to an internal pressure of 60 N/mm2.Berfore the fluid is admitted the internal and
external diameter of the compound cylinder are 120mm and 200mm and the
diameter at the junction is 160mm.If after shrinking on, radial pressure at the
common surface is 8N/mm2, calculate the final stress set up by the section. [16]

The steam pressure is 1.05 N/mm2.Find the stress in the piston rod and the
elongation of a of 75cm, taking E = 205kN/mm2 when the piston is on the in-stroke

b) A piece of steel 1metre long and 3cm2cross-section is subjected to a tensile force of
120kN in the direction of its length .Calculate the change in volume. Take
1/m=0.29 and E = 205kN/mm2 .

3. . A horizontal cantilever m long carries a U.D.L. of 2kN/mwhich extends over the
middle 1.5meter of the beam and act downwards. In addition to this concentrated
load of 5kNacts downwards at a point 1m support and another concentrated load of
3kN acts upward at a free end. Draw B.M. and shear force diagrams.

U.D.L.of16kN/m.Calculate the maximum span of the beam if the maximum bending

A 61cm 19cm I- joist has 2.7cm thick flanges and 1.5cm thick web. Calculate the
maximum intensity of shear stress and sketch the distribution of stress across the
section, the S.F. at the cross-section being 600kN.

6. . A girder of uniform section and constant dept of 500 mm is freely supported over a
span of 8 metres. Calculate the deflection for a uniformly distributed load on it such
that the maximum bending stress induced is 90 N/ mm2. Take E=2.04X105 N/mm2.
If for the above girder, the flanges are so portioned that there is uniform flange stress
of 90 N/ mm2 through out the beam, calculate the central deflection.

7. . A thin cylindrical of 100mm internal diameter and wall thickness2mm has its ends
closed by rigid plates and is then filled with water. When external pull of 20kN is
applied to the ends, the water pressure, read by the gauge is observed to fall by
0.075N/mm2.
Neglecting any end effects due to plates, determine the value of Poissons
ratio for the metal. Take E for the metal = 2.1 105 N/mm2 and bulk modulus of water
= 2.17 103 N/mm2.

8. Calculate the thickness of metal necessary for a cylindrical shell of internal diameter
of 80mm to withstand an internal pressure of 25N/mm2, maximum permissible tensile
stress is 125N/mm2 .

1. A bar of elastic material is subjected to directed stress in a longitudinal direction,


and its strains in the two directions at right angles are reduced to one-half and onethird respectively to those which normally occur in a ordinary tension member. If
E=200kN/mm2 and m = 4, what is the value of elastic constant?

2. A beam ABC 11m long is simply supported at A and B and has overhang BC of
3metres. It is loaded with U.D.L. of 4kN/mover the whole length. A con cent rated
load of 30kN is acting at 6metre from A. Calculate the reactions. Find the position
and value of maximum bending moment and plot the B.M. and S.F. diagrams. [16]
3. . A timber joist of 4metre span has to carry a total load of 80kN uniformly distributed
over the length. Calculate the dimensions of the joint if the maximum permissible
stress is limited to 8N/mm2. The ratio of the depth to width is to be 1.5.

4. . The cross-section of a joist is a tee-section 12.5 12.51.2cm with 12.5 cm side
horizontal. Find the maximum intensity of shear stress and sketch the distribution
of stress across the section if it has to resist a shear force of 90kN.
