7. 26. A compound cylinder, formed by shrinking one tube on to another, is subjected
to an internal pressure of 60 N/mm2.Berfore the fluid is admitted the internal and
external diameter of the compound cylinder are 120mm and 200mm and the
diameter at the junction is 160mm.If after shrinking on, radial pressure at the
common surface is 8N/mm2, calculate the final stress set up by the section. [16]

maximum intensity of shear stress and sketch the distribution of stress across the
section, the S.F. at the cross-section being 600kN.

6. . A girder of uniform section and constant dept of 500 mm is freely supported over a
span of 8 metres. Calculate the deflection for a uniformly distributed load on it such
that the maximum bending stress induced is 90 N/ mm2. Take E=2.04X105 N/mm2.
If for the above girder, the flanges are so portioned that there is uniform flange stress

7. . A thin cylindrical of 100mm internal diameter and wall thickness2mm has its ends
closed by rigid plates and is then filled with water. When external pull of 20kN is
applied to the ends, the water pressure, read by the gauge is observed to fall by
0.075N/mm2.
Neglecting any end effects due to plates, determine the value of Poissons
ratio for the metal. Take E for the metal = 2.1 105 N/mm2 and bulk modulus of water
= 2.17 103 N/mm2.
