Torah Portion 49, Ki Teitzei, that means when you go out. This Parashah
consists of 4,5 Chapters, covering 31 topics and contains 74 Commandments

45. We are instructed to maintain accurate weights and measures in business.

There are a lot of Commandments in this Portion that applies to us directly, but
the majority of these Commandments do not directly apply to us at all.
Example: The Commandment regarding war, none of us are soldiers and there
is currently no war, how does that apply to me? Then we read about the
Commandant about a rebellious son that needs to be stoned at the gates if I
do that I will end up in jail. The Government of the Land is currently overseeing
and enforcing the Justice System, and you are not allowed to take the law in
your own hands, applying the Torah literally. In the time of Israel, it was the duty
of Moses (leaders) and the Priesthood to govern the people, and YHVH gave
them the Torah as the basis for their government. All the laws in their
government are directly given by YHVH that is different to our Government
system under a Democracy where people can make and change the laws of the
land. None of us is an officer of the law or a Levite, and we cannot enforce any
of these Laws or execute judgements upon people today.

Non-Applicable Commandments
Q - What do we do with Commandments that is impracticable to obey or that are
not applicable to us?
Paul gives us an understanding of the importance of all Scripture where he
states that ALL Scripture is breathed by YHVHs own breath and comes only
from Him.
2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
When Paul wrote this, the Berit Chadashah (Renewed Covenant / New
Testament) did not exist, and when Paul used the word Scripture, he was
referring to the TaNaK (Old Testament better translated as the Torah
Prophets and Writings / Psalms).
When YHVH created man He breathed into
Adam, and he became a living soul. That first
breath gave him life, but that was not the only
breath he took. You need to keep on breathing
to stay alive, and YHVHs Word (TaNaK + Berit
Chadashah) is the air or breath (Ruach) that
comes from YHVH so that you can stay alive
spiritually. Then we will be competent followers
of Messiah, trained under YHVHs Word. The
Scriptures and the Breath of YHVH (His Spirit)
cannot be removed from each other just like you cannot speak words without
using breath to activate your vocal cords. We need to take every breath to stay
alive and some breaths you need will be from the Scriptures that you think are
not applicable or not relevant anymore. Dont hold your breath when you come
across these Commandments.
In a previous Parashah we saw that when you are tested the first thing that will
happen is that whatever is in your heart will reveal itself first so that you can see
what is in your heart, YHVH already knows. Being confronted with
Commandments that seem to be irrelevant is a similar test, where YHVH is
exposing your heart or attitude towards His Word.
3

It is like when a stranger walk into the room, and you get a first impression.
Thoughts will come up that make you feel attracted or repelled by the person.
The one thing you have to remember is that Yshua is the Torah in the flesh, and
when He walks in the room and does not look the way you pictured, then your
heart will be exposed regarding Him and His Word.
Non-applicable Commandants you are confronted with will test your attitude
towards the Word as well as your understanding of Scripture as a whole. Do you
see that every word, every letter that was written is part of the One you serve,
and that every breath that spoke these words came from Him? Do you
understand that everything that originates from the Father is good and safe to
explore? There are believers out there that warn others not to be concerned
with the Torah because you will put a heavy burden on yourself and lose your
salvation because your faith becomes legalistic and works based. These
assumptions are formulated from Yshua and Pauls teachings where they spoke
out against the Pharisees, dismissing their oral and manmade traditions that
placed heavy burdens on YHVHs people, causing them to go astray. Yshua
said that His yoke is easy, and His burden is light where He is referring to the
pure unchanged Word of YHVH that consists of the Torah, Prophets and the
Writings (TaNaK).
Q What should we do with these non-applicable Commandments?

Guard & Listen to His Commandments

As discussed in last weeks Torah Portion, the principle of someone having the
Birthright is to act in the office of the Priest of that household in order to guard
and protect, to teach and transfer the faith to the family and the next
generation. We should act as Priests of the Household preserving and protect
the entire Word with all its content, not adding or taking away with our own
preferences and understanding. We will look at a foundational passage in
Deuteronomy chapter 12 to explain this concept more clearly.
Deut 12:28 Observe and Hear all these words which I command you,
that it may go well with you, and with thy children after you forever,
when you do that which is good and right in the sight of YHVH your
Elohim.
Observe is the word rms shamar that means, to keep,
regard, watch, watchman, save, to safeguard that is to
hedge with thorns. This is the main topic we discussed last
week in Parashah 47, that is to behold or to see that has
to do with the opening of your spiritual eyes that is the first
step in your re-creation process. Shamar is first used in
Scripture in Gen 2:15 where YHVH placed man in the
Garden of Eden and Commanded him to dress (abad) it and
keep (shamar) it. Dress is the word abad that means, do,
till, serve, servant, worshippers, service, labour, ear.

Hear or to hear is the word shema ims

that means, to listen with attention. To listen in
Hebraic thought is to give your very soul to
what you hear, like listening to music that
moves your soul, something we touched on
last week as well.
Spiritual Insight: The two words Shema
and Shamar not only sounds similar, but
they also are related and form part of the
process of receiving the Breath of YHVH,
as if you are standing right in front of Him as
He speaks His Word to you. Dressing the
Garden is mentioned prior to keeping
(observing) it [Gen 2:15], and hearing is
prior to observing [Deut 12:28]. This gives
us insight into the three progressive steps
that constitutes a breath that you need to
inhale as YHVH breathes it over you within
a pint in time.

What is true Worship? We have

a totally different concept of
worship today, thinking it is singing
slow songs to YHVH and to
Yshua. Worship consists of two
parts or two aspects: The first
aspect of worship is found in the
word shachah, that means, to
bow down, do reverence as in
bowing before royalty. The second
aspect of Worship is related to
work as found in the meaning of
the word abad. This teaches us
that everything you do in everyday
life is worship unto YHVH if you do
it in relation to His Word, His
Wisdom and His Commandments.

This reveals to us the first step where you have to hear the Word (shema),
then, step 2, you can act on the Word, applying it or its wisdom in your life by
doing it (abad), and this action of your service is seen by the Father as
worship unto Him. The last step is to observe it (shamar). then you will
learn, understand and see as you act on these Words YHVH breathed.
If you approach His Word with the right attitude and have an understanding to
guard and listen to His Words attentively, (even the ones not applicable to you),
then it will go well with you and your family forever.
Go well is the word buy yatab that means: go well, happy, beautiful, make
cheerful, find favour, and receive kindness. This word is first found in Scripture
in Gen 4:7 where YHVH spoke to Cain after he killed his brother Abel asking;
why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? If
you do not do well, sin lies at the door.
Spiritual Insight: Sin came into the Garden through the Serpent and the sin
at the door is no other than the Serpent
trying to get into your house. Another
point of note is the u tet in the word
yatab that means support and snake
or serpent. When you observe (shamar)
the Commandments, you do well and will
be accepted. When you do not keep the
Commandments, you will not do well, and
sin or the Serpent will start to enter your
life.
Q - Why has Cains countenance fallen?

Countenance is the word panyim ,ynp that means face and the phrase;
countenance fallen means to be angry and countenance lifted means, not
to be angry anymore. Esau was not sad; he was angry, and the anger opened
the door to the Serpent and sin that entered his life. Anger is a self-centered
emotion that normally leads to sin. Observing YHVHs Commandments will
help you to live according to His Word and not according to your emotions.
We see from the meaning of the word yatab that His Words will make you
beautiful and happy, it will prosper you and make you cheer with happiness, you
will find favour in His sight and He will prosper you, and His countenance will be
lifted, and you will be accepted. (YHVH will no longer be angry with you). This
sounds similar to the Aaronic Blessing:
Numb 6:22-27 YHVH spoke to Moses, saying, 23 Speak to Aaron and
his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to
them, 24 YHVH bless you and keep you; 25 YHVH make his face to shine
upon you and be gracious to you; 26 YHVH lift up his countenance upon
you and give you peace. 27 So shall they put MY NAME upon the people
of Israel, and I will bless them.
In the context of the Blessing, we see that we need to put His Name upon us
because we are part of Yisra-El, the straight or righteous ones of Elohim.
Q What does it mean to put His Name upon you?
Your Name is your Character in Hebraic thought and to put YHVHs
Name on you is to put His Character on you, meaning that you become
like Him, having His Character strains. It is your responsibility to put His
Name upon yourself or to apply His Word / Commandments that contain
His Character. Those who have received His Spirit will find it more
natural to walk in His Character because His Commandments are written
in their hearts. Please note that it is not YHVHs Spirit Who does this
automatically, you need to hear (shema), do (abad) and guard and
observe (shamar) His Commandments, then you will carry His Name.

YHVHs Commandments Reveals His Wisdom

Every single Commandment came from the mind of
YHVH and is founded upon wisdom. The
Commandments that seem not to apply to us today, are
built on and contain hidden wisdom, when uncovered,
will help you to deal with everyday situations that are not
directly mentioned in the Torah. These Commandments
reveal YHVHs Mind and how He applies His wisdom to
deal with things in a practical way concerning His
people at a particular point in time.
Paul gave us a good example in 1 Cor 9 revealing the wisdom gleaned from the
law regarding the ox: What does the ox have to do with us?

I Cor 9:9-12 For it is written in the law of Moses, You shall not muzzle
an ox while it treads out the grain. Is it oxen God is concerned
about? 10 Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no
doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who
threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.
There are four levels of interpreting Scripture in order to uncover the wisdom
within the Commandments. These four levels is based on the Hebrew acronym
that made up from four words; pashat, remez, drash and sod:
1. Pashat Face value interpretation, understand it as it is written. We read about
7 Churches in Revelation and there was 7 Churches existing in that time in those areas.
2. Remez Referring or hinting to other verses, connecting thoughts where thoughts rhyme.
The women at the well in Genesis connecting to the woman at the well in Matthew.
3. Drash Know as allegorical meaning where something can be like something else. The &
Churches in Revelation can refer to me and this commendations and reproof YHVH will
give me if I fit the attributes of that Church.
4. Sod Hidden meaning that can only be revealed through the Hebrew text and symbolic
understanding of the Aleph-Bet letters and numbers.

Wisdom Revealed: Here Paul uses the drash method of interpretation of

the Word, that is where something can mean something else through its
symbolism. The ox represents people working in the Kingdom. Not muzzling
the ox means that believers should not be mistreated or overworked for the
benefit of the work that needs to be done in the Kingdom. This is so that the
work can be done effectively, by efficient workers, and not only dependent on
one person, but supported by the whole Body or Assembly, so that the
outcome hoped for can be achieved with multiple reliable labourers. We will
look at a few more examples later on in this study.
Q - What should our attitude be towards YHVHs Commandments?
Whenever you read a Commandment that sounds strange or that is not directly
applicable to you, then your first reaction should be, to ask YHVH to reveal His
hidden wisdom behind that Commandment, so that you can know Him more and
so that you can gain wisdom that you can apply in your life. David, the man
after YHVHs own heart had the following attitude towards YHVHs
Commandments as stated in Psalm 119:
33 Teach

me, O YHVH, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the
end.
me understanding, and I shall keep Your Torah; Indeed, I shall
observe it with my whole heart. 35 Make me walk in the path of Your
Commandments, For I delight in it. 47 And I will delight myself in Your
Commandments, Which I love. 48 My hands also I will lift up to Your
Commandments, Which I love, and I will meditate on Your statutes. 97 Oh,
how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 You, through Your
Commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; 105 Your Word is a lamp
to my feet and a light to my path.
34 Give

Deeper meaning behind the Commandments

Lets look at some of these Commandments that do not
apply to us directly in order to find the hidden wisdom.
Before we start, we will look at a holistic view of all the
Commandments in this Torah Portion to gain the context of
why YHVH wants us to gain wisdom; even from words do
not understand yet.

The War Parashah

This portion is called the war Parashah, starting
with the topic of war in Deut 21:10, and ends in
Deut 25:17 on a topic on war.
Deut 21:10-11 When you go out to war
against your enemies, and YHVH YOUR
ELOHIM delivers them into your hand, and
you take them captive, 11 and you see among
the captives a beautiful woman, and desire
her and would take her for your wife
Deut 25:17-19 Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you
were coming out of Egypt, 18 how he met you on the way and attacked
your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and
weary; and he did not fear Elohim.19 Therefore it shall be, when YHVH
YOUR ELOHIM has given you rest from your enemies all around, in the land
which YHVH YOUR ELOHIM is giving you to possess as an inheritance,
that you will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
You shall not forget.
It starts off where a beautiful woman can be taken as a bride from the camp of
the enemy and ends where it says to eradicate the memory of Amalek, the first
enemy Israel encountered when they left Egypt. Amalek represents the flesh
and Egypt depicts sin and bondage. This gives us the insight that the section in
the middle, sandwiched in between the two war themes, is also about war. The
opening and ending words of this Parashah can be combined to make the
following phrase, When you go out to waryou shall not forget. Ki teitze lo
shakach
Go out: Ki Titze comes from the root word yatsa that means out, forth, go
out, go forward, to come out of. It is first found in Scripture in Gen 1:12 where it
says that the earth will bring forth (yatsa) grass and herbs, yielding seed after its
own kind.
Personal Application: This verse in Deut 21 can be rephrased as follows
When you go out to war, remember where you come from and bear fruit after
your kind. When you are in the world, within a situation where you are
confronted and have to act, think before you act or say anything, remember
that you are from the Household of YHVH and that you represent Him, with
this in mind, act and face your challenge (enemy).

Forget: Shakach is a primitive root that means to forget, to be forgotten,

cause to forget, and is first found in Scripture in Gen 27:45 where Sarah
advised Jacob to flee from his brothers anger until he forgets (shakach) what
has been done to him. The context is Jacob receiving the Birthright and the
blessing, and Esau receiving a curse [See Parashah 47 p10 for detail on this
statement].
Personal Application: In context with Deut 25, this verse
reveals to us that the enemy is represented by Esau and
the reason for the battle was the Birthright and blessing,
trying to take it back with force or just elimination the ones
carrying the Birthright and the Blessing. Deut 25 advise us
as believers not to grow weary and tired, becoming
stragglers at the back, because those are the ones the
enemy will go for first, because they are easy targets. To
be a straggler means to be weak, feeble, unsteady or unstable. These are
believers who allowed doubt to come into their lives or became confused,
listening to false truths. When you are uncertain of your faith and what you
stand for, then compromise is the next step that will cause your defeat and
submission to the enemy. Know the Word and be confident in the Truth so
that you can defend the enemy with the Sword of the Word and Spirit.
Q Why is there a war theme sandwiched in the middle section, between
these two passages that starts and ends this Torah Portion?
Taking possession of the Land of Promise goes hand in hand with removing the
enemy or inhabitants from the land before you can fully occupy it. These
residents are seen as enemies that will try to keep you from taking possession
and steal your inheritance from you. We have previously discussed the enemy
symbolised by Esau, who hates the people who carry the Birthright and that he
promised to eliminate them. We also looked at the sin of Cain, where emotions
allowed the Serpent to enter through an open door. The other enemy is revealed
through the meaning of Amalek, who represents the flesh, the internal enemy
that wants to prevent you from becoming spiritual and stay fleshly.
The Torah Portion starts with the Commandment regarding taking a beautiful
woman that you find on the battlefield, as your wife. Then there is the law about
two wives, and how to deal with a rebellious son. We also read about the
obligation to bury the dead without delay, and the requirement to return a found
object back to its owner and the prohibition against prostitution, etc.
Q What has these Commandments to do with warfare? Wrong question! You
should rather ask; what war is YHVH referring to?
The war YHVH is referring to is not seen on the Pashat level (see things as
they are) but has a Sod meaning (deeper hidden meaning), it reveals the
internal war that every person face every day, the war against the yetzer
harah or evil inclination or the flesh. This war is not only raging in every
person but is also found in the Body of Messiah, causing conflict within the
Community or Assembly. We need to be aware of this internal enemy that will
try to destroy you and the Body of Messiah.

Deut 21:10 When you go out to wartake a beautiful

woman as your wife.
In a state of war, a womens defence was to beautify herself so that the enemy
will not kill her. Even in the time of the Holocaust, the women adorned
themselves with the hope, not be killed with the rest of the people.
The Torah states that after taking her captive, she had to shave her head,
remove her makeup, let her nails grow ugly and dress in sackcloth so that she
can mourn for her family. The person could take her as his wife after a month
passed, if he was still attracted to her. If not, then he had to let her go free,
letting her live.
Q How does this apply to me in the context of my internal battle against the
yetzer harah (evil inclination)?
Drash: A Beautiful woman represents your thoughts about things you desire.
Looking upon a beautiful woman is the reaction you get when you see things
you desire, similar to when a young man sees a beautiful girl that could
potentially become his wife.
Remez: (linking one word/idea in one passage to the same word/idea in another
passage) To glean insight into this we need to look at what Paul wrote regarding
your thoughts.
2 Cor 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according
to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in
God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every
high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim, bringing
every thought into captivity to the obedience of Messiah,
Wisdom Revealed: We find two sets of rhyming ideas, thought (beautiful
woman) in Deut rhymes or links with thought in 2 Cor. captive in
Deut connects to with captive in 2 Cor. This reveals to us that
the beautiful woman that is taken captive, is the same principal
Paul was talking about, taking our thoughts captive. This gives
us the insight that in order to overcome the internal battle we
need to take every beautiful woman (thought) captive before
you act on it. Kill the desire so that you will not be
overwhelmed by your feelings or emotions, opening a doorway
to the Serpent. Then think into the future what the worst
outcome may be to see if I still want to marry this woman (act
on this thought). Now you have discovered the wisdom from this
Commandment that can be applied to numerous situations in your
everyday life.

Deut 23:13-15Your Tent peg is a weapon

Deut 23:13 And you shall have a stake (tent peg) upon your
weapon; and it shall be, when you will ease yourself abroad, you shall
dig therewith, and shall turn back and cover that which come from you.
A stake or tent peg is listed as part of a soldiers weaponry.

10

Q - How can a tent peg be a weapon and what does it mean on a deeper level
regarding my internal war against the flesh?
Looking at the tent peg can reveal wisdom on two levels; firstly, wisdom can be
revealed from the object itself and secondly, from its application or use.
Tent peg as an object: It states in the passage that the soldiers
had to dig with a tent peg in order to cover their excrement so
that YHVH will not see a shameful thing. The Tent peg is
connected to the letter vav in one of its meanings. Not only that,
the letter vav is the 6 in Hebrew and 6 means man.
Wisdom Revealed: This tent peg represents a weapon that protects me from
myself, from my own excrement or shame. Excrement does not represent
sin, but represents the by-products of being human, things that you do that
but should not discuss with others or put on display. This confirms that when
you drive a tent peg into the ground, more than half is hidden in the ground
the rest is exposed above the ground. The tent peg represents you and that
certain things in your life can be revealed and other things should stay hidden
and should never be part of normal conversation. Picture a scene where you
see Yshua walking into a room where you and your friends are having a
conversation. Would you feel the urge to change the subject the moment you
see Him?
You can use this test when you are with friends, to check the topics you are
discussing openly with family, friends or fellow believers. Are you talking
about your personal things like intimacy with your spouse? Are you talking
about a family members weaknesses or are you exposing someones sin or
are you humiliating a friend under cover of only being a joke? All those things
might be true but should stay hidden and you need to cover your personal
life, your spouses weaknesses or a family member or friends faults or sins.
Some things are not to be topics in general conversations.
Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only
such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the
moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Tent pegs application connected to a Tent (Presence):
There is a lot of wisdom hidden within the use of a tent peg,
and the primary function is to set up tents. These are not only
ordinary tents people live and camp in, but it also refers to the
Tent of Meeting or Tabernacle that contained the presence of
YHVH. In the same way is your body a Temple where the
Father and the Son dwell through YHVHs Spirit.
John 14:15-17,20-21,23 If you love Me, keep My
Commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you
another Helper, that He may abide with you forever 17 Even the Spirit
of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it sees Him not,
neither knows Him. But you know Him, for He dwells with you, and shall
be in you.20 At that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in
Me, and I in you.

11

21 He

that has My Commandments and keeps them, he it is that loves Me;

and he that loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him and
will manifest Myself to him. 23 Yshua answered and said unto him, If a
man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and
WE will come unto him and make Our abode with him.
The Spirit of YHVH is given to those who love YHVH and do His
Commandments; His Spirit is different to other religious spirits imitates His
Spirit. His Spirit can only be received by those who see the Truth and knows the
Truth. The truth is found within the Commandments of YHVH as stated here.
YHVHs Spirit, the Truth and His Commandments are echad or One and cannot
be removed from each other. If anybody preaches against the Commandments
of YHVH the question should be asked, is this teaching inspired by the Spirit of
Truth or by another spirit that is opposing to YHVHs Word and Truth? He is the
Word or Truth Who became flesh and dwelled among us, and if you embrace
His Commandments, then He and His Father will come and dwell in you. We are
in Yshua, Yshua is in His Torah, and He is in His Father, Who send the
Commandments to us. His Spirit of Truth will help you to receive His Truth, His
Messiah, His Torah and ultimately His Father. They are all interlinked and
cannot be separated; they are echad or One. If He dwells in you, then you will
dwell in Him or His House or Tent where you will fellowship with Him in His
Presence.
Tent pegs application connected to a tent (Unity): Can a tent peg be a
weapon, it might sound a bit foolish to the world, but we know that there is
wisdom in this concept.
Q How can the tent peg be a weapon?
Wisdom Revealed: A tent peg can be a weapon of defence, ensuring the
integrity of the support structure of the tent or Body of Messiah. It provides a
stable support when driven deep into the common ground or foundation, to
uphold the Tent it is connected to. A single tent peg does not add value
unless it is used with several other strategically placed tent pegs that
surround the Tent and give support from all angles. Tent pens representing
people and the Tent, representing the Body of Messiah reveals to us the
importance of the Gifts of the Spirit (different angles, different locations) as
well as the importance of unity amongst these tent pegs in order to hold up
the Body of Messiah so that this Presence can dwell among them that
support Him. One tent pen with all the gifts will only let the covering flap in
the wind; all should come together with a diversity of functions as given by
His Spirit, to place each one on a strategic corner of the Tent in order to
uphold the Body.
2 Chr 30:12 12 Also in Judah the hand of Elohim was on the
people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the
king and his officials had ordered, following the
Word of YHVH.
Not only that, the Tent needs to be erected on a flat
and stable area. One peg cannot be on a hill and the
other pegs in the ditch, and some pegs cannot be on
the solid ground and the rest in sloppy mud.

For the Body to stand firm and strong, all tent pegs need to be on common
ground, based on the same fundamental truths.
Matt 7:24-27 Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does
them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the
rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and
beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them,
will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house;
and it fell. And great was its fall.
The same process can be applied to the rest of the inapplicable
Commandments in this Torah Portion to give us more insight that will equip us
as soldiers, so that we can drive out the inhabitants from the land. Dig deeper
using the Scripture searching techniques found in PaRDeS so that you can find
His Wisdom and apply every Word YHVH spoke into your life. Keep on
searching the truth and learn together with fellow believers, not on your own so
that the Body of Messiah can be made complete and that you can be part of
YHVHs household.
