RELAXATION WITH

OSHO MEDITATIONS ?
Even if it sounds a bit mystical at first, this is a discipline that everybody
can practice. It leaves your mind free of thoughts and you will let go of
tensions and feel more peace.

A PATH TOWARDS THE INNER

fter the summer holidays is a good

time of to reframe the year and to discover

new activities that we are interested in or
that will help us to feel better.
The frenetic pace of western society
provokes tension, anxiety, hurry, and, of
course, stress.
Also we can be our own worst enemy when
we let ourselves be trapped by the tension
or by subjective prejudices and fears that
prevent us from living in peace. If one it is
at ease with oneself, one feels a sense of
well being, and this is transmitted to others.
To achieve that one needs to know oneself
in depth -- a difficult task because we dont
have time even for our everyday outer
responsibilities, much less for ourselves.

Many mystics and philosophers of

humanity, such as St. Augustine, St.
Thomas, the Sufis and dervishes,
have practiced meditation, and
whatever they have learned has been
decisive for human thought.
Active meditation is a tool that helps to
find oneself, and to discover ones
own unique qualities and needs,
rather than just trying to adjust to the
needs of society or to the needs of
other people in our lives. As it is said
by the mystic and Hindu master Osho:
The way is IN!

WHAT IS
OSHO MEDITATION

It is a technique that
helps to understand
how the mind works
and how to get free
of the thoughts and
the feelings that
overpower us and
produce tension and
anxiety. Its goal is to
provide us with a
better knowledge of
ourselves and to
increase our wellbeing.

WHO WAS OSHO?

WHERE TO LEARN

Born in India, in 1931, his trajectory was driven by his

search for the meaning of life. He graduated with a
degree in philosophy and was a professor in the
University of Jabalpur for many years. He started to
give lectures and to lead meditation sessions all
around the country and afterwards throughout the
world. Later on he settled in Poona (India) where he
gave his lectures till he died 1990. Actually there are
Osho meditation centers all around the world and his
talks have been published in 600 titles and translated
in more than 50 languages.

These centers organize numerous

activities,
classes,
workshops,
courses and sessions of meditation
in open spaces. You can participate
in sessions of a day, of a week, or
even of more time.
There is
absolute
freedom
to
choose
according to the personal rhythm of
each person.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Contributes

to increased relaxation, tranquility and inner peace

Through dance you can release tensions and anxiety

Eliminates fears and allows us to think with more clarity
Teaches you to be more aware of yourself and of your actions
It helps to rediscover the unique qualities of each one of us, to feel
more fulfilled and to enjoy quietness or inner silence.

OSHO MEDITATIONS HAVE SEVERAL STAGES -- IN EACH ONE OF THEM the

movements, the dances and the exercises CHANGE
Throughout his life, this Hindu
mentor developed a series of
techniques to allow man to achieve a
state of relaxation and inner peace.
How? Through a deep cleansing
process of the thoughts, which
makes it possible to free oneself
from anxiety, the impositions /
hangovers of the past, and the
pressures of the present.

WHAT IS ALL ABOUT?

Just as today a cult of the body
exists with sports, meditation is an
activity that helps to awaken the
mind and the senses. Is not about
thinking
or
reflecting
upon
something, but on the contrary, a
state of total stillness and inner
silence. Osho developed many
active meditation techniques to
express emotions in a conscious
way, to

bring repressed feelings to the surface

and to learn to watch both our feelings
and the world around us.

MANY STAGES
There are many stages of the
meditations
The first step consists in
reaching a state of relaxation
without controlling the mind,
without fighting with the thoughts,
without concentrating.
The second step, is to watch
and be alert of what it is
happening around us, without
interfering and without judging. If
one reaches to this final step,
silence happens. Every activity
stops
and
one
feels
an
inexplicable plenitude where the
being stops trying to make sense
of things, and allows itself to
dissolve in space.

Culture and Life Style Magazine

Highlights from a recent article about Osho and

his books by Chiles largest Life Style magazine.

THE OSHO PHENOMENON

Incredible. His books are all over the shops, his maxims are recited by actresses,
models and TV animators. The man once known as the "Sex Guru" or "Guru of the
Rich", is today read by hundreds of people who don't know who he was or the
history of the movement that he led in the '80s. Fashion? Self-Help? Massive
Enlightenment? Oshomania?
Hey Egghead! Kenita Larrain (Chilean model)
reads Osho! With an air of surprise and without
judgments, that is the conversation that takes
place between one sannyasin and another in the
Tavelli Ice Cream Store. And it is true -- the way
Kenita found to get through her crisis after
breaking up with "Bam Bam" Zamorano (Chilean
soccer world star) was not talking with her girl
friends. Neither was it going to a spiritual retreat, or
lying on the couch of some fashionable
psychologist. The magic formula she used to find
her inner peace was to read Osho.
The same recipe was used by Ingrid Cruz (Chilean
TV actress) to get out of the depression brought
upon her by family members. Beyond Los Andes,
Natalia Oreiro credits her happiness to this guru,

as do Nacha Guevara and Ludovica Squirru (an

Argentinean writer of a yearly Chinese Horoscope)
who confessed: "Osho has blown my mind":
In between the manicures, pedicures, Pilates classes,
and hair-do sessions, the national show biz elite read
Osho. They recite his teachings on TV programs and
slip his words into newspapers and magazines that
nowadays have seen themselves flooded with phrases
like "the mind is the enemy of man," "intuition is a
leap," or "the essence of wisdom is being in harmony
with the natural rhythm of the universe." His books are
selling like hotcakes not only in bookstores but also in
shopping malls and superstores (Multitiendas) between
the aisles of clothes and domestic electrical
appliances. What is this phenomenon all about?

That Osho has been a Master with thousands of

followers worldwide is nothing new.
What is
astonishing is to hear his name--and his teachings-uttered by many who until recently knew nothing of
the existence of this long-bearded guru with the
profound eyes, who died in India in 1990. Now,
among his well known followers are Angela Contreras
(Chilean movie actress) and her husband, Roy Burns;
Francisca Merino (Chilean TV actress), Mario Azocar
(Actor), Katyna Huberman (TV star of many
successful programs) and Alejandro Tonda.
But Oshos message has expanded in the last two
years. Many of his discourses have been compiled
under titles such as Creatividad, Intuicion, Intimidad,
with covers in pastel tones and designs that shout out
loud that they are spiritual self-help texts. They say
that this expansion and mainstream appeal was
something Osho foresaw on his death bed. "Before
leaving his body, one of the messages that Osho sent
to the sannyasins (his disciples) was that we would
be surprised by the number of people that would
come, says Baula, daughter and sister of
sannyasins, who has followed his teaching since she
was 21 years old. "And the old man was not wrong".

OSHO Inc.
In Chile, the movement of Osho has deep roots. His
following dates back to the beginning of the 80's,
when he was not yet called Osho, but Bhagwan
Shree Rajneesh. The first echoes of his message
arrived from India, where the Master had founded an
ashram of six acres in Poona. Now the "Commune"
has changed to "Osho Meditation Resort".
Fascinated with the teachings of this Master which
proposed a path of syncretism between Hinduism,
Zen
Buddhism,
Christianity,
Classic
Greek
Philosophy, many other traditional philosophies,
psychology and new forms of therapies and
meditation, many members of the so called "elite of
Santiago became sannyasins, which at the time
involved dressing in red from head to toe, Their
choice had a cost for many, including being
disinherited by their families. "My mother discovered
Osho when she was 40 and my dad 45, says
Ananta, Baulas sister. They had everything in the
world, but they couldn't find a way to live their
spirituality. For them it was suicide or becoming a
sannyasin.
"It's the same thing that is going on now: The world is
so crazy -- people realize that whats available
doesn't work and they are looking for other ways to
be happy. They know that just being a consumer has
no meaning. Osho used to say that people who had
money knew they would not be happy because of it,
but the poor still had hopes. That's why they called
him "The Guru of the Rich," says Baula.

The truth is that Osho always surrounded himself

with luxury. At his 65-thousand acre ranch in
Oregon, USA --where he lived between 1981 and
1987- his 27 white Rolls Royces were famous.
"Osho always proclaimed that luxuries and the inner
life had to be enjoyed, he saw no contradiction
between the two." says a sannyasin.
"Osho's message was for humanity. He settled
down in USA and bought the Rolls Royces to attract
attention and make himself known. Today, it's a fact;
he is by far the most famous guru in the world,"
says Ananta. And he is absolutely right: the 750
Osho Meditation Centers that are spread in 80
counties across the world testify to the fact, as does
the publication in six languages of the Osho Times
International, which is distributed all over planet
Earth. And celebrities over the entire world pay
homage to his memory.
The fact that in Chile many are just beginning to
know him is surprising, but it has a reason.
Today, 14 years after his death, Osho's legacy is
handled by the "Inner Circle" which has transformed
the former "Commune" into a resort with hotel
included, where tourists from all over the world can
participate through "package tours" including
meditation. This, along with the fact that many major
publishers now have Osho book programs, are
some of the measures that have worked. The
number of visitors has gone up 50 per cent , and 88
per cent of the increase are people who are not
sannyasins. Osho books in Spanish have sold more
than 500 thousand copies in two years.. "If today's
handling of his legacy his very commercial, that is
very Osho-like: he told us that there is no
contradiction between the spirit and the world. It
can be Osho Inc. and still be very spiritual", reveals
a disciple who lived with him in Poona.

SAMMASATI
Uptown Providencia (a well known sector in
Santiago) in the Dehesa Mall, where purses made
by Louis Vuitton are sold along with backpacks, it is
possible to find the guru's books. "The increase of
public interest in Osho is due to his unprejudiced
and courageous vision that presents solutions,
guidance and counsel for the modern man, affirms
Luis Martin Santos, agent for Osho in Spain. This is
a view confirmed by Jimena Pizarro, owner of the
bookshop "LILA" where the old books of Osho can
still be found, with their panoramic covers.
Many of the people who have recently
discovered the teachings of the guru are women that
feel an emptiness in their inner life. "In Osho I found
the peace I was looking for. He has shown me that I
must not search outside for what I have inside of
me, that I must put aside the wrapping and
concentrate on the content", says a young
professional woman who, after reading Osho has
began to meditate.

"Osho is totally open, and that is why he reaches

everyone.
People of different races, social
classes,
nationalities,
beliefs,
types
of
personalities, show business people, or very
mystical people who spend their time meditating 24
hours a day....." says Baula.
Whether it is just a fashion or not, thats not a
concern for the sannyasins: The last thing I could
have imagined is that Osho would become a
fashion, says Vikrant. He was one of the most
iconoclastic masters that have ever existed.
Since Oshos words are not the same as that of
Jesus, those of Socrates or those of Mohammad,
since his philosophy took something of all currents,
his message is well received in all parts of society.
"Now Osho seems to be in fashion and probably
many people read him because of that. But it
doesnt matter if somebody gets something good
out of it, so much the better, says Katyna
Huberman.
Today, even the most devoted followers of Osho
are choosing their individual way.
Which is
something their own guru taught them. His last
words were "Sammasati, Be a light unto
yourself," says a sannyasin. "That's what many of
us are doing.
"What I feel now is that each Osho disciple carries
his message. He said it when he left his body:
"Now, when I die, I will dissolve in my people and
as you can taste the ocean anywhere it is salty,
you will be able to taste any of my sannyasins and
you feel the same taste. Exactly that.

highlights of the article

The Earth and the Skies United.

The phenomenon of growing interest in the spiritual literature based on
example of OSHO books.

For several years now I visit quite frequently American bookstores. For a couple of years
it is clearly noticeable that the amount of books that represent Spiritual Literature is
growing rapidly. This trend starts also picking up in Poland.
There are numerous new categories and sub-categories created within this group. The
same tendency can be seen in Internet bookstores. For example the Internet Bookstore
Science and Religion has doubled the quantity of the offered spiritual bestsellers from
500 in 2001 to over 1040 in 2007.
Sera Beak, the Author of The Red Book (planned by Nowy Horyzont in 2008) forecasts
in her book that in the next couple of years there will be more spiritual books sold than
fiction.
More and more often books from the spiritual group are being placed on the bestselling
lists. More and more often people are seeking the spiritual websites.
One of the examples is the Osho.com website (and here I provide statistics regarding
rapidly growing quantity of visitors from the article about Osho Publishing). On this
website you can find variety of subjects from information about Osho Meditation
Resort in Puna to Osho Library where you can read any chosen Osho book.
There is over 700 titles of Osho books published and they are being translated to over 50
languages.
Osho teachings are bridging Eastern and Western ways of living. In his opinion the ideal
man should not only know how to enjoy pleasures of life but also how to meditate for
pleasure of your spirit.
Tom Robbins wrote about Osho (excerpt from the cover of Leonard Cohen songs: The
Tower of Song). Shortly - about Zorba the Budda concept.
Osho books are being published by well-known Publishers (Random House, Penguin,
Mondadori.) In Poland there are currently over 20 Osho titles on the market published
by KOS, Santorski, Ravi, Garmond and Nowy Horyzont.

Each book of the popular series New Horizon published by Garmond/Nowy Horyzont
faces one important problem of the contemporary person. It provides diagnosis and leads
the reader toward finding his own way to solve it.
The growing popularity of the spiritual literature has many reasons. The most important
seem to be related to our fear of commercialization, growing consumption, ecological
catastrophe, genetic experiments, war and massive destruction.
The spiritualization of life seems to be a proper way to help ourselves in order to be
able to help the World.

at the Osho International

Meditation Resort in Pune, India

It is just past seven am

and I am sitting by the resort pool watching the suns rays slowly
beam through the branches of the luscious trees surrounding me.
The pool water is still, and some steam rises up into the cool
morning air. A male peacock strolls nonchalantly past me, stopping
briefly to have a sip from the spring water pool and then continues
on his merry way. This scenario could be taken from fairy tale, but
it is very much real to me sitting here at the Osho International
Meditation Resort in Pune, India.

innerretreat

Osho was an Indian mystic and spiritual

teacher who reached enlightenment in 1953
at the age of 21. Trying to define Osho is
like trying to imprison a rainbow or catch a
cloud. The gurus teachings emphasise the
importance of meditation, awareness, love,
celebration, creativity and humour qualities
that he viewed as being suppressed by
adherence to static belief systems and
religious tradition.
Although there are active Osho centres
all over the world, Pune is definitely a pivotal
hub that carries a special energy. You can
either stay at a hotel located near the campus,
or right next to it in the newly opened Osho
Guesthouse, which provides the comforts of
home (air-conditioning, attached bathrooms
and double beds) for a good price.
The campus itself is a huge compound
that includes a 12-acre Zen garden, spaceage pyramids and club meditation area,
where you can enjoy facilities such as a
gym, swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi.
It also has two restaurants serving organic,
self-grown vegetarian food. Even with these
luxuries surrounding you, the retreat still
feels like a spiritual oasis, offering a multitude of possibilities for inner discovery and
exploration. Im not the only one to think
so; thousands of visitors from over 120
countries and every cultural tradition come
to visit every year to take time out from
the external stresses of life and nourish the
soul, via various courses in meditation and
personal transformation.

AsiaSpa 2009

I am no different. I have been coming

yearly for the last four years. Along with the
meditations, I return to connect with my inner being and with friends I have made along
the way; like-minded people that are looking
for the same as I am in my life.
From the very first moment I step into the
resort, there are open arms welcoming me
and I feel instantly connected to a beautiful,
serene place inside myself. Its as though
I have more space when I am here; like
being tapped into a feeling of love that is
nearly tangible.
This is my fifth visit to the resort and
although I had tried a number of different
methods of meditation from silent sitting
to chanting somehow they didnt offer
me what I had been looking for: peace, joy
and a sincere connection with myself.
It is certainly not often I am up and
active at five oclock in the morning but in
this place, there is something very magical
about this time of day. The silence feels
like a warm blanket surrounding me, only
briefly interrupted by the awakening birds
that are enjoying the lush greenery that
envelops the majority of the resort.
As much as I can feel the benefits of meditation, it continues to be a daily challenge
to get out of bed at six am. In anticipation of
this, the resort has a morning shuttle available
to all so that no-one can use the its too early
and too far away excuse. Although I can only
muster a grunted morning and stay silent
until I reach the meditation auditorium, the

presence of other sleepy faces that are committed to starting their day like this is both
comforting and inspiring.
According to Osho, there are 112 known
forms of meditation believed to have been
given by the God Shiva to his consort Devi.
It was Oshos belief that by going through
the 112 varieties you would inevitably find
the one that suits you best.
The way the resort is designed and run,
meditation can happen both within one of
the many scheduled guided meditations or
simply when you are in nature enjoying
some quiet time. I am somebody with a
lot of energy and sitting still for hours has
always been a challenge for me, which
is why dynamic meditation suits me so
well. Dynamic meditation is one of Oshos
signatures and consists of five stages: chaotic
breathing, cathartic, physical movement and
mantras, meditation and dancing.
Chaotic breathing takes place accompanied to music and involves rapid breathing
through your nose for 10 minutes. Its said
that if you fully embrace the breathing in
this first stage, the rest of the meditation is a
breeze. Thanks to the intensity of increased
oxygen intake, the first few minutes of rapid
breathing really pumps up your energy and
wakes up every part of your body. Since the
rest of the meditation requires all your energy,
this first stage is essential to commit fully. I
often felt a little dizzy by the 10-minute mark,
yet empowered; if nothing else, its a great
way to clear up your sinuses for the day.

The cathartic stage (also set to music) is a

cleansing process created to release suppressed
emotions before meditation begins. The first
few times I did this I was startled by all the
energetic activity that happened in this stage.
People around me were screaming, yelling and
crying, yet feelings of anger, sadness and rage
are emotions that I rarely give myself room
to experience and I always thought I didnt
have them.
At first I was a little shy, thinking someone
would be watching me or listening to my process,
yet one morning when the catharsis stage started,
I was surprised to find myself like a child in the
terrible twos stage, lying on the floor kicking
my legs, crying, screaming, and even shouting
profanities! Obviously I had plenty of unexpressed baggage that Id been carrying around
and felt a fantastic release of energy afterwards
that left me feeling aware of a new lightness.
The third stage involves jumping up and
down with your hands in the air, shouting the
mantra ho, ho for 10 minutes. The combination
of the jumping and the mantra moves your sex
energy and life force. I have chronic lower back
pain and was very nervous about this stage
before I realised the jumping can work as a form
of massage. The vibrations of the jumping made
my back feel better so I jumped to my hearts
content. When stop is shouted, everyone stops
exactly where they are; if your arms are up, your
arms must stay up for the 10 minutes of profound
silence and stillness that follows.
The first three stages prepare you for a
kind of exhaustion that allows the fourth stage
meditation to happen on its own accord.
By this I mean all else falls away and you have
a chance to be truly intimate with the silence
within yourself.
In the final fifth stage, the group dances
in celebration, and that too happens on
its own accord. Osho was a great believer
in celebrating joy and a sense of freedom
though dance and music and I cannot imagine
a better way to honour his legacy than by
dancing around the room.
Leaving the hall is a beautiful experience. If
you look closely at peoples faces there are no
traces of strain or exhaustion, only peace and
calm. Through this practice I have started to
understand that meditating is not just about
sitting silently in a cave, but embracing every
moment of the meditation space dynamically.

A PLACE OF INSPIRATION AND

CONNECTION
THE KEY TO RELAXATION IS AWARENESS, BEING A KEEN OBSERVER OF ALL THAT IS GOING ON BOTH INSIDE AND AROUND US THIS
IS THE INNER SCIENCE, OFTEN ALSO CALLED MEDITATION. OSHO
An air of secrecy and silence shrouds the OSHO International Meditation Resort, commonly referred to be the
place where one retreat for the practice of yoga or other meditation disciplines. The exterior of the resorts
buildings is well concealed by bamboo and tall walls. It can be described as a cross between reality and
spirituality. Lavishly constructed from white-and-black marble, and spread across 40 acres, the resort has
wonderful greenery, pools, as well as cafs, shops, a pool, a basketball court, and tennis courts. OSHO
International Meditation Resort is situated in the residential area of Koregaon Park in Pune, India.

The vast soundproof pyramid, with space for five thousand people to sit
together, may well be the only one of its size in the whole world which
is used for meditation. To go inside you need to walk over a bridge, and
it seems as if the structure itself is emerging out of the water; this is to
remind you to drop your mind before entering.
Besides the OSHO Auditorium, there are more mysterious pyramids on the
other side of the Resort. And a big open-air expanse of marble, known as
Buddha Grove and surrounded by tall bamboo trees, provides the space for a
number of classes like Tai Chi.
The Resort also houses the OSHO Multiversity, the largest center in the
world for personal growth processes. Guests can also learn new life-skills;
tools to take home that will help remain relaxed even in the busiest of
workaday environments. There is a stunning selection of individual
sessions and classes to nourish your body, mind and soul as well as longer
workshops, courses and professional trainings. All the methods have
meditation both as their base and their objective.

Aside from the meditation, the plush Osho Guesthouse is of itself an

attraction to the resort. As the tastefully decorated, quiet rooms are almost
on top of the Auditorium, it makes attending OSHO Dynamic Meditation at
6 in the morning no chore.
There are 60 rooms, all with double beds, air conditioning, and attached
bathrooms. Four of them are designed to accommodate people with
physical difficulties.
The OSHO International Meditation Resort is immaculately beautiful and
imposes a feeling of silence and emptiness. The architecture somewhat
look bizarre with a lot of dark grey stone buildings and pyramids, but much
greenery to cover them which helps giving a vibrant strand to the neat area;
which creates in design an element that can touch with the understanding
followed by Oshos ideology: humans are touched by vertical energy - it is
their nature - the tall tree standing alone touches deeply the mind, the
soul and the body. The expense and energy which must have gone into the
creating of it is impressive.

OSHO: for more

than 35 years, he
delivered lectures
all around the
world. The role of
woman and the
eternal feminine
were some of the
topics he
addressed.

OSHO

A 21st Century Prophet

He didnt write, he spoke. His teachings originated hundreds of books.
Hes an Indian best-seller, an oracle of modern times.

The books by Osho, considered

the Indian writer with greatest
international success, sell over a
million copies a year. There are
over 600 books attributed to him.
But Osho wrote none of them. His
books are transcripts of the
audiovisual records of his lectures,
which, for more than 35 years, he
delivered all over the world. He said
of himself that he was neither a
prophet nor a philosopher. He
simply transmitted, through words,
the alchemy necessary to mans
fundamental balance.

The Sunday Times described him

as one of the 1000 makers of the
20th century and American author
Tom Robbins described him as the
most dangerous man since Jesus
Christ, both comments due to
Oshos revolutionary approach to
the science of inner transformation.
He was born in India in 1931 and
was soon discovered to be a gifted
student. Between 1958 and 1966
he was a professor at the
University
of
Jabalpur.
He
abandoned his career as a scholar
to devote himself entirely to the
study of spirituality. Until his death,
in 1990, he founded several
meditation resorts and delivered
conferences all over the world.

Publishing House Pergaminho

pays tribute to this author by
devoting an exclusive collection to
him called Oshos Books. The
three most recent titles in this
collection are The Book of Man,
The Book of Woman and The
Book of Children.
A more distracted reader might
consider these just three more titles
about trendy subjects like the
eternal feminine, the age-old
conflicts between men and women
or tricks to get children to behave
and eat all their veggies. A closer
look would prove him wrong.
Written with clarity, sharpness and
humour, these three books address
very contemporary subjects, almost
compelling the reader to ponder
subjects which, being common,
tend to slip us by.
CRACA MARTINS

His Work: Osho spoke on

many subjects. These are
three titles in a series
dedicated to the family:
The Book of Man, The
Book of Woman and The
Book of Children.

Live as Dangerously as Possible

Guru, philosopher and enlighten spiritual master, provided with a privileged
intelligence and loquacity without pair. Only those who are ready to die as they are
now and be reborn as something so new that they cannot imagine, will be ready to
listen to my message, he said to his millions of followers.
Known as One of the most influential people of
the 20th Century; he was subject of profound love
and extreme hate, Osho has been defined either as
a free agnostic thinker, the sex guru in India,
the Rolls Royce guru in USA, The counter culture
guru, One of the makers of the 20th Century, and
the most dangerous person since Jesus Christ. An
outspoken figure and provocateur, the truth is that
with his more than 650 titles published in 55
languages with his ideas and thoughts, Osho has
an inbuilt capacity to explain the abstract in a very
simple language, and to illustrate it with creative
anecdotes, jokes, making fun of ordinary life and
playing deconstructive games with words.
A mystic, philosopher, professor and spiritual
master, his talks questioned all the governing
concepts and established traditions. He attacked
the idea of nationalism, marriage, family,
ideology and religions. He outraged Hindu
leaders with his concept of free sex. He criticized
politicians and made openly fun of highly
respected religious dogmas.
Osho grew up as a rebellious and independent
spirit, standing up to imposed religious, social and
political traditions, insisting that one should
experiment with truth by one self, instead of
accumulating knowledge and believes from others.
His syncretic teachings put the emphasis on
meditation, on awareness, on love, celebration,
creativity and a sense of humor. In his view all
these qualities have been repressed in the world
because of our attachment to believe systems,
religious traditions and education.

From beginning to end

As an outspoken and disruptive figure,
exceptionally intelligent, Osho had to
overcome big obstacles to adapt to live in
society. Educated by his grandparents in a small
village in India, this young inquirer and nonconformist, the elder son of 11 brothers, will
devote his life to create his own world.
Due to his disruptive and challenging behavior,
he developed into a rebellious and talented
student and became infamous as an outstanding
debater. Osho was relieved of the duty to attend
classes, but the qualifications of his exams were
superior and excellent. As a student he won a
gold medal when making the first place in a
national debate contest that covered all of
India, later he graduated whit highest honors
at the University of Sagar.

his view all these qualities have

He became spiritually enlightened on 21. March

1953, at the age of 21, in a transcendental
experience. He adopted the name Osho in the
90, a name derived from the word oceanic,
which means dissolving into the ocean and
which in the East means the blessed on whom
heaven pours flowers. That date marked a
turning point on his path: I am no longer
looking for anything. Existence has opened all its
doors to me. I can't even say that I belong to
existence, because I am part of it. When a flower
blooms, I flourish with it. When the sun comes
out, I go out with her. My body is part of nature;
my being is part of the whole. I'm not a separate
entity.

The Poona Ashram

Located about sixty miles southeast of
Bombay, the 'ashram' of Osho in the city of
Poona, has become one of the main tourist
attractions of the India: today called Osho
International Meditation Resort', this
'spiritual oasis', is home for the teachings of
a variety of spiritual techniques and
traditions to discover oneself. It is
estimated that the resort attracts around
200,000 people per year, also visited by
figures such as the Dalai Lama.

As a student he won a gold medal

when making the first place in a
national debate contest that
covered all of India, later he
graduated whit highest honors at
the University of Sagar.

Moving to Poona in 1974, Osho established

an ashram and attracted an increasing
number of Western visitors, became
headline news in India and abroad because
of the liberal environment and his
provocative lectures. A space for the
initiation of his disciples (then known as
neo-sannyasins) and make Osho their
spiritual teacher, the ashram becomes
quickly an exciting and intense place, with
a wild carnival and emotionally stimulating
atmosphere.

Osho gave his last public talk in 1989. After that,

he was in silence among his followers and dealt
with his health problems. Suffering from
diabetes, asthma and allergies, Osho died with
only 59 years, on January 19th, 1990: Let me go.
Existence has decided that it is time... My
presence will be much stronger without the
burden of my tortured body, he left at 17:30. If
there is any truth in what I have said, it will
survive... Consciousness is not a monopoly of
anybody, the same with celebration, joy and an
innocent child's gaze... Know yourselves because
the path is inside.
His epitaph was written by himself before he
died: OSHO: Never Born. Never Died Only
visited this planet Earth between December 11,
1931 and January 19, 1990.

One of the conditions to entry is an AIDS

The newly established center soon became a center

of Arts and craftsmanship, a place of manufacturing
of clothing, jewelry, ceramics, organic cosmetics,
theatre, music and mime. With the arrival of several
therapists from the Human Potential Movement,
the ashram began to accompany meditations with
therapy groups.
The place functioned as an iconic base of
revolutionary teachings to the inner transformation
of human beings. The focus is put on meditation,
recognizing the accelerated rhythm of modern life
and Osho developed a series of active meditations
including dynamic meditation, designed to relieve
stress accumulated in the mind and body of
contemporary people. On the path of meditation
and the self-knowledge, a uniquely true way, we
have to understand that Life is not waiting for you
anywhere else, is going on in you right now. It is not
in the future as a goal that you have to reach, it is
here and now, at this very moment, in your
breathing, in the circulation of your blood and in the
beating of your heart. Whatever you are thats your
life, and if you seek meaning elsewhere, you will
miss it.
'Politics is Dead'
'I don't have any interest in an ideal society, and I
ask you also to leave that dream behind, a dream
that has caused so many nightmares. We must
remember that at this moment nothing can happen
through politics, politics is dead.'
An enemy of rigid systems, vested interest and
orthodox rituals, Osho was a firm critic of political
ideologies and oppressive religious systems, he saw
as guilt-ridden and misleading. He lectured against
and criticized socialism (in spite of having briefly
joined their ranks during his early youth, looking at
it later just as a tool to share and increase poverty)
and against the immaculate figure of Gandhi, which
he accused of retrograde masochism and
worshipping misery. In his opinion, what his
country needed to escape from underdevelopment
was capitalism, science, modern technology and
birth control.

You have to give up the idea of a salvation. No

system will be the salvation: communism,
fascism or Gandhism. There is no savior: not
Jesus Christ, not Krishna, or Rama. You have to
forget the nonsense about guilt and sin you're
carrying. Put all your energy in dance and
celebrating life, then you will be at ease, here
and now, and you will not have to become an
ideal. Ideology has lost any authenticity, in fact
never had, and also gone is the ability to
convince. There are very few serious minds who
continue to believe that we can achieve a new
utopia through social change. Forget the
utopian ideals and live here and now.
'Seriousness is a Cancerous Tumor'
Life in its totality is a great cosmic joke. It is
not a serious phenomenon; take it seriously and
you lose it, understand it only through
laughter.
Using paradox and contradictions, Oshos
teachings do not support a specific academic
structure, or an abstract philosophical system.
Difficult to summarize in a final form, his
insights are interspersed with jokes and
illustrative stories taken from everyday life. His
insights are expressed in an articulate and
simple rhetoric; his talks include much humor
and a blunt refusal to take anything serious.
This is 'a technique of transformation' to take
people beyond 'the mind'.
In the same way as Sufi teachers tended to
make fun of their disciples so that they would
think, reflect and meditate, the style of Oshos
talks abandoned any intellectual profile and
included include irony, black humor, shock and
amusement for his audience.

Man has not achieved anything with

seriousness, but has simply lost everything and,
is still serious. I am absolutely against
seriousness. I call it a 'psychological disease'.
Only a playful, childlike, innocent behavior is
what I call a virtuous, religious, spiritual
behavior... not only human, but divine. At the
moment when you're as innocent as a child you
have transcended humanity, you have entered
the world of the divine.

These are not just jokes, they are devices. You

able to laugh. And if you're able to laugh at
yourself, you've laughed for the first time. I have
to tickle you so sometimes you forget your
'religion', forget all philosophies, theories, and
systems and put your feet on the Earth. I have to
return you to Earth again; otherwise you will
tend to be serious, more and more serious. And
the seriousness is a cancerous tumor.
Zorba the Buddha
My message is very simple: live life as
dangerously as possible. Live life fully, intensely,
passionately, because life is the only God, and it
is in you.
Osho has spoken virtually on every aspect of
development of human consciousness; based
not on an intellectual understanding, but on his
own existential verification of his experience;
away from

all tradition: I am the beginning of a whole

new consciousness; I do not connect with the
past, it is not even worth to remember. My
message is not a doctrine or a philosophy. My
message is alchemy, a science of
transformation. Those who are ready to die as
they are and to be reborn as something new
which they cannot even imagine... will be ready
to listen, because listening is going to be risky.
To listen, you've taken the first step to rebirth. It
is not a doctrine in which you can find
consolation to frightening questions. No, my
message is not a verbal communication. It is far
more dangerous. It is not less than death and
rebirth.
Osho was a persistent advocate of the creation
of a 'new man', an evolved human being
capable of simultaneously embrace science
and spirituality. A humanity threatened by
overpopulation, a nuclear holocaust and
diseases such as AIDS, creates the environment
for the birth of a new type of human being;
often characterized as 'Zorba the Buddha', for
the ability to combine the enjoyment of
worldly pleasures (like Zorba the Greek), with
the ascetic and serenity of a Gautama the
Buddha.
Every moment is precious; do not waste it in
unconsciousness. If you value every moment as
an opportunity to obtain greater awareness, it
will increase day by day. Suddenly, one day, you
will discover that light shines inside you. If you
strive to achieve it, one day you'll wake up as a
new being - aware, loving but not attached; an
inhabitant of the world, but a watcher from the
hills. That is the paradox that must be
encountered; being and not being in the world
simultaneously.

And the Flowers Showered Arkano Books
Subhuti was one of the disciples of the Buddha.
He came to understand the power vacuum, the
reality that nothing exists but in a relationship of
subjectivity and objectivity. One day when
Subhuti was sitting under a tree in a state of
sublime vacuum, began to rain flowers to her
around.
We praise you for your discourse on the
vacuum the gods whispered to him. But I
have not spoken of the vacuum, said Subhuti.
You have not spoken of the vacuum, we have
not heard the vacuum, responded the gods.
This is a real vacuum. And showered flowers
on Subhuti.
Osho says some of these Zen stories revealing
their deepest meaning: not only explains the zen
thinking, but rather, it also integrates with
various aspects of Eastern and Western thought
in
an
extraordinary
synthesis
which
characterizes him and that constitutes his
peculiar
vision:
global,
timeless
and
mischievously iconoclastic.
The Magic of Self Respect - awakening to your
own consciousness Random House
Mondadori
Part of our everyday experience is shaped by
religion and the social conditions and we are not
even aware of it. Osho explains that we are
constantly being polished unique nature with
which we were born. This unique and original
nature is replaced by our fake I, ego, who takes
the reins and control our creativity, which means
for us to succeed, our personal relationships and
own experience of who we are. At the same
time the egos collection known as society,
shapes our political, educational and religious
institutions that are still transmitting the same

patterns to new generations of innocent human

beings. In this title, Osho introduces us to the
process of finding out who we really are, and it
helps to take the first step: see who and what we
are not. Then it will be when the magic of selfesteem can allow us to reveal to us. A risky and
courageous book which, away from oneself, takes
you directly to the essence of oneself.
The Razors Edge Debolsillo
We live in a world in crisis whose reality, often,
we do not know how to deal with. Technology,
science and economic exploitation seem to be
the only maxims of today, to the detriment of the
growth and maturity of our consciousness. In
addition, society seems doomed to abuse of
power and the destruction of the ecosystem.
However, Osho reminds us that it is not the first
time that humanity faces random times, reason
by which urges us to go along the razor's edge, to
make an effort to revolutionize our conscience,
force it to move from the mundane to the
transcendent and try to achieve the own growth
and of our beautiful planet.
Only a playful, childlike, innocent behavior is
what I call a virtuous, religious, spiritual
behavior... Not only human, but divine. At the
time that you're as innocent as a child you have
transcended humanity, you have entered the
world of the divine.
In the same way that every seed holds the
potential of the tree, everybody can become a
Buddha, a Heraclitus or a Jesus', but you should
strive to achieve it. Just lukewarm efforts will not
work. In the West, there is much confusion about
Zen masters, because they speak of the
effortlessness. But a person must work for twenty
years with a Zen master to achieve this state of
effortlessness. For Heraclitus, effort is the base
and if you strive for truth, you will automatically
reach the state effortlessness. If you strive to
reach consciousness, with time, you won't need to
do anything, because it will be there, like
breathing.

Osho's 'ten commandments'

To the questions of a journalist, Osho enjoyed
create a series of commandments. Although
alien to any fixed orthodoxy, this was his
response:
1. Obey no instruction unless it also comes from
your inside.
2. There is no God but life itself.
3. Truth is within you. Do not look for it
elsewhere.
4. Love is a prayer.
5. To become empty is the gateway to truth.
Emptiness itself is the method and goal.
6. Life is here and now.
7. Live, fully awake.
8. Dont swim, float.
9. Die every moment so you can be born again
every moment.
10. Dont search. That what is, is. Stop and see.

The Book of Ego Debolsillo
Osho shows us the way to liberate ourselves from
our ego and become ourselves. The ego is the
opposite of our true being. It is the substitute of
our existence that we know, a false identity that
we adopt in our process of socialization. The ego
is a wrap of our conscience and, unless we
liberate ourselves from it, we never meet
ourselves.
Being in Love Debolsillo
Everyone thinks that love is necessary, that
without it life makes no sense. But only a very
few people really know how to love. Not
everything people do in the name of love is love,
but is something else. Osho is one of those who
can teach us. Love often comes together with
other notions: jealousy, anger, hatred, possession,
domination, ego. These are poisons that destroy
the true nectar: love means to get rid of all these
interferences. Only then, at that very moment, a
love of unprecedented clarity flourishes around
us.

Close your eyes and take the Jump Debolsillo

Listen to the sound of your truth. At the
beginning of this book, Osho is asked how to
recognize the sound of truth when we hear it,
even if we never felt it within ourselves. With a
caring and humorous attitude, Osho reminds his
readers that, in reality, each of us contains the
experience of the truth: the truth is in each of us;
all children are born in truth.
Body Mind Balancing Debolsillo
This book is a practical guide to know your own
body and learn to listen to its language on a path
of healing to wellness through active
meditation. Unhappiness is nothing more than
the product of a personal choice when wellness
tools are within easy reach. The mind-body
balance is an instrument that is necessary when
it comes to get on the path of relaxation, to
relieve discomfort related to stress and pain.
Physical and psychological stress, aches and pains
are nothing more than the product of noncommunication between mind and body. The
purpose of this book is exactly this, the
importance of understanding the body, listening
to symptoms and warnings, thus to deepen and
harmonize the mind-body connection, achieving
the sought after balance.
The book is accompanied by a guided meditation
that takes the listener through the rediscovery of
a loving and positive attitude toward the body. It
is an education, a learning how to be kind to our
body and discover its potential, our powers we
surprisingly never thought to be capable of. The
body is the key; the body is the cornerstone to
access your own consciousness.

BUSINESS WEEK ONLINE NOV. 2, 1998 ISSUE SPECIAL REPORT: ARCHITECTURE AWARDS

TEMPLE OF COMMERCE

How does an architect design a space for a business that produces books, tapes, and videos dedicated to An
Indian philosopher who urges a meditative approach to life? That was the challenge Osho International gave to
Daniel Rowen Architects. The solution is an elegant, serene, 2,500-square-foot headquarters, full of light and
space. The company wanted to consolidate its offices around the world in an environment that was contemplative
yet productive. Long, clean, vertical lines and modern materials work toward that end. Cabinets and records are
hidden. A translucent, acid-etched glass wall visually quiets the main area. The layout of offices was designed for
maximum flexibility, reflecting Osho's nonhierarchical organization and its belief that creative solutions come
from a process of ''unfoldment.'' Publishing and multimedia clients like the space so much that they prefer to hold
meetings there rather than in their own offices. The budget, including the furniture and the fees for the architect,
was $750,000.

Linda Richman has had a difficult time; at one

point she felt so overwhelmed by all the deaths
and tragedies in her life she didn't venture out
of her apartment for 11 years. Finally, she
learned to laugh about her troubles and, by
extension, teach other afflicted souls -including many of Hollywood's brightest -- to
do the same. So when her agent, Richard Pine
at Arthur Pine Associates, recently brought her
in to see publishers to talk about her book proposal for The
Courage to Laugh, several were anxious to meet her and sign her
book. In the end, it was Warner's Rick Horgan who took the North
American rights, beating out Dell/ Delacorte's Leslie Schnur for
what he called "very major money." There are a lot of selling points
for Richman in addition to what Pine described as her ability to
deliver "a real, true Jewish chicken soup for the soul." Richman is
probably best known to the public at large as the model for the
character played by comic Mike Meyers on Saturday Night Live. (It
doesn't hurt that Meyers is her son-in-law.) According to Horgan,
"The group who met her at Warner were bowled over by the wealth
of stories from her own life and the wry lessons that are implicit in
them." He plans to publish in fall 2000.
NATION OF MANY GODS
Far from being the monotheistic nation it once was, the United
States is now a country of remarkable religious pluralism. That is
the basic thesis of The New Religious America by Harvard
professor Diana Eck, who has chaired the university's Committee
on the Study of Religion for the past decade and whose book has
just been signed by Harper San Francisco executive editor John

Loudon. Loudon said he had been pursuing Eck for a book suitable
for a trade readership for years, and when her agent, Jill Kneerim
of Boston's Palmer & Dodge, passed on word of the book's
availability, he snapped it up with what he called a "substantive"
preempt. Loudon said that The New Religious America, which
HarperSF will publish as its lead title in spring 2001, will be the
first book to reveal the extraordinary diversity of American
religious life, in which Muslims now outnumber many Protestant
denominations.
12 DEGREES OF KNOWING
A blast from the mystic East is to arrive by way of St. Martin's
Press, whose Michael Denneny has signed a program of no fewer
than 12 installments in a new series being created by followers of
the late guru Osho. The series, Insights for New Ways of Living,
with its first book out this fall and continuing into 2001, will consist
of decks of transformation and continuation cards, as well as an
Osho autobiography and works of wisdom on such matters as
creativity, aging, femininity and death. The deal, described as being
in the six figures, was put together by Jim Fitzgerald, himself an
SMP alumnus who is now agenting at the Carol Mann agency.
SHORT TAKES
Morgan Entrekin at Grove/Atlantic has signed Robert Olen
Butler for a satirical novel titled Desi about a spaceman and set in
the near future. According to Entrekin, the story has "a very big
surprise at the end and could answer once and for all whether there
is intelligent life beyond Earth." The agent is Kim Witherspoon....
Joanna Pulcini at the Linda Chester agency has sold Betty Kelly,
editor-in-chief at Morrow, a novel called Boy Still Missing by a
former colleague of Kelly's at Cosmopolitan, senior books editor
John Searles. It's part of a two-book deal for a strong six figures
and tells the story of a teenage boy involved in an affair with his
father's ex-mistress.... Emily Heckman at Pocket Books won a
heated three-day auction for a true account by ace San Francisco
Chronicle reporter Frank Viviano of the early days of the Mafia in
Sicily, based on the murder there a century ago of his great-greatgrandfather. The deal for Blood Washes Blood, for six figures, was
made by Amy Rennert of the West Coast office of Donnaud &
Rennert.
