3 SUPERVISOR INFORMATION
SUPERVISOR SELECTION AND APPROVAL
Each student enrolled in MSTM 410A is responsible for selecting a project Supervisor who will
oversee the technical progress of the project through completion of MSTM 410B. Potential
Supervisors must be identified for approval no later than Week 2. Therefore, students must
complete and submit the attached Supervisor Identification Form immediately since the project
Supervisor is expected to help with topic selection and development of the Concept Paper.
The Supervisor should be someone who is interested in your topic, is prepared to offer the time
required to assist you with this project, and does not present a conflict of interest such as being a
co-worker or a direct or extended family member. Additionally, it is critical for the Supervisor
to have the appropriate academic and technical qualifications required to constructively advise
students on project development. Therefore, the Supervisor must possess ONE of the following
sets of qualifications:
PhD
Masters Degree + 3 years relevant work experience
Bachelors Degree + 5 years relevant work experience
Students should look to educational institutions, local companies, and industry organizations for
an appropriate Supervisor. The ideal Supervisor would be a faculty member in a
college/university or a manager of a company/organization such as a current/former place of
employment. Students are not provided with a list of potential project Supervisors nor will a
Supervisor be appointed for them.
Note 1: Typically, if a Supervisor possesses the outlined qualifications and does not present a
conflict of interest, approval is granted.
Note 2: Attached are two forms:
Supervisor Identification Form must be submitted to the D2L dropbox by the student by
Week 2. Supervisor approval is mandatory for students to proceed with MSTM 410A
requirements.
Supervisor Agreement Form must be emailed to the Facilitator by the Supervisor no later
than Week 4.
For supervisors who are Marine Institute personnel, honorariums are transferred into a Faculty
Research and Educational Trust, in accordance with established University Policy and
Guidelines. Marine Institute employees acting as supervisors will do so according to the
Institute's practice for supervision and examination of major papers in undergraduate and
graduate degree programs.
For non-Marine Institute personnel, including faculty from Memorial University, fees are paid
directly to the supervisor following the students submission for examination of the Technical
Project Report at the end of MSTM 410B.
