Lesson Plan in Mathematics

I.

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:
a.) Plot the given points(coordinates) on the Cartesian coordinate plane
b.) Determine the coordinates of the given point in the Cartesian plane

II.

Subject Matter
Plotting a point and determining the coordinates
Reference : Elementary Algebra by Gladys Nivera, pp. 238-241
Materials : Graphing paper, charts, strips of paper

III.

Procedure
A. Review
Cartesian coordinate system (axes, origin, quadrants)
B. Motivation
Let the students sing a certain action song (Pizza hut, KFC & Mc Donald)
Ask the students:
Who among you here went to pizza hut? KFC? Mc Donald?
In Gensan, where do Pizza hut, KFC, Mc Donald located?
What is the importance of knowing the exact location of a certain
establishment/ place?
C. Presentation
Plotting a point on the Cartesian plane is somewhat the same
with locating certain object, establishment, place and etc.
Discuss:
a.) x-coordinate or abscissa- tells the distance of the point from the
origin measured along the x-axis
b.) y- coordinate or ordinate tells the distance of the point from the
origin measured along the y-axis.
c.) Coordinates of the point- ordered pair that represents a point
Example:
(2, 1) -------ordered pair(x,y)
x-coordinate
y-coordinate
To plot points in the Cartesian plane:
a.) Determine the quadrant where the point belongs.
b.) Locate the x-coordinate on the x-axis then the y-coordinate on
the y-axis.
c.) Put a dot at the point where these lines intersect.
Example: Plot the ff points on the plane with the given coordinates
P(1,4); L(3,4); A(4,2); N(3,0); E(1,0); S(0,2)
Ask:If you connect all points accordingly, what geometric figure will you
form?
Ans: Polygon (Hexagon)
Now, if you are asked to determine the coordinates of a given
point, how will you do it?
Be reminded the signs of the coordinates of a point tell us in which quadrant the
point lies. Q-I(+ , +); Q-II(- , +); Q-III(- , -) and Q-IV(+ , -).
To determine the coordinates of a given point: start in the point of origin then
move either left or right of the origin(along the x-axis) depending on the location of
the point and lastly move either upward or downward.
Example: Determine of the coordinates of point S, I, and R.

D. Application(by group)
Instruction: Plot the following points on the Cartesian plane and connect the
points accordingly to see the picture behind. The first group that can answer
correctly will have 10 points additional on your participation.
P(0,5); O(2,3); L(4,3); Y(2,1); N(4,-2), O(0,-1); M(-4,-2); I(-2,1); A(-4,3); L(2,3)

The picture is a STAR. Relate it to Christmas.

If I put point S(anywhere on the plane), determine its coordinates, anybody?

E. Generalization
Let the students draw their own generalization about the topic.
-How to plot points on the Cartesian plane?
- How to determine the coordinates of a given point on the plane?
- Do you think plotting points and determining coordinates important? Why?
How?
IV.

Evaluation
A. Plot the ff. points.
L(2,6) ; Y(-3,2) ; N(-4,1)
B. Determine the coordinates of each point on the plane.

V.
