disadvantagesofbothsystemsitwillbehelpfultohaveacomparisonofbothsystems.
DoyouhaveacomparisonthatshowsthedifferencebetweenISO9001andSixSigmawhichiscompactenoughto
explainthedifferencetothemanagement?

ISOisbasedontotalcontrolofaproductionoperationfromlabelingeverypieceofequipmenttomanaging
acceptablenonconformingpercentages.Itfocusesoneliminatingerrorsthroughpreestablishedcontrolsystems
and100%producttracking.WhenacompanybecomesISOtheymustconformtothespecificISOstandardsset
forth.WithISOqualityisexpected,howevertherearesystemstofixunforseenerrors.
ProsPreestablishedqualitysystemstoensurecustomersatisfaction.
ConsExpensive,requireschangethroughouttheentirecompany,mightrequireproceduresthatareexcessiveto
yourspecificrequirements.
However,
SixSigmaisbasedonmanagingresourcestoreducenonconformancesandsatisfystandardssetforthby
customerstothetuneofonly34nonconformatiesper1,000,000,000.SixSigmaaddressesqualityissuesasthey
ariseandreliesonSixSigmamanagerstofixproblemsandestablishdifferentprocedures.Whenacompanyadopts
SixSigmatheymustspeciallytrainmanagmenttoestablishandadaptcontrolsystems.
ProsOnlyrequirementisthatmanagersundergospecifictrainingandadaptSixSigmamethodologydoesnot

IthinkthatintroductionofSixSigmamightbeagoodsteptoimplementISO9001becauseitmakesthe
employeesawareofqualityissuesandthecostsavingeffectsyoucouldgetwithprocessimprovements.
Additionallytheemployeeswillgetusedtostatisticmethodsandtoolstoidentifyandimprovecertainprocesses
throughouttheorganization.ThismakesitmucheasiertoimplementISOinthenextstep,whichwillthenleadto
aninternationalaccepted,certifiedqualitymanagementsystem.

SixSigmaisbasedondataanalysisandapproachandwhichaimsatimprovingqualityoftheproductoroutput.It
mostlyconcentratesonimprovingthebusinessprocessesbyanalysingexistingprocessandfindingoutthechanges
thatcouldbemadeforimprovingqualityandefficiency.
OntheothersideISO9001focusesonsettingSpecificationsandstickingtothesetstandards.Itdoesnotimphasise
oncontinuousqualityimprovementasinSixSigma.

Letmeshowacompanywherethe6sigmareallymotivatedtheworkers.
Theyfeltmorepartofit.
Theircareerprogressingwasalsoconsideredfortheirbeltgrowingprocessandpartoftheirincentiveswere
basedonthatprogression.
Theyonlyhadafewblackbelts(meninblackastheycalledthem)andtheyareveryseniorandinmostcases
retired.Thistechniquehaslotsofbenefits:
Theblackbeltsaremoreindependent(theydonotcareanymoreaboutsatisfyingtheirimmediatebosses)and
feelcommittedwiththecompany
Theyknowthecompanywellindepth,whatbetterexpertthattheonewhoweretherefor40years.
Theyarerespectedbyotherworkersandthequalityprocessisnotonly"fillingpapersforstupidoutsidenorms"
Despitestheystartedthisprocessbecauseithelpedussavingmoney(expertise/costratiowasveryhighasthey
onlyhadtopaytheblackbeltsduringthetimetheywerereviewing),theyhaveevenobservedsomeother
benefits:
MiBworkedhard,someofthemevencuredfromadepressionastheyfilledthegapofretirement,theyhadthe
feelingbackofbeinguseful.
Theyandtheotherworkersarereallycommitedastheyfeelthecompanyreallycaresaboutthemnowandin
thefutureevenafterretirement.

withboththeterminologiesandtheirimpacttothegivenproduct.ISO9001:2008isaninternationalstandardmeant
forimplementingaqualitymanagementsysteminanorganization.Alltheregulationsinthisstandardaresolely
focusedonprovidingcustomerssatisfactionandaimatmeetingcustomersrequirement.Morebroadly,ISO
9001:2008speaksofuniversalruleswhichifsuccessfullyimplementedareboundtoachievebusiness
sustainability.Ontheotherhand,SixSigmaisadiscipline.Itfocusesmainlyonimprovementwithintheprocesses
andhencereducethedefectratetoachievespecifiedrequirement.SixSigmainvolvesmoreofrigorousstatistics
andinquiries,becauseinordertoachieveSixSigmaperformance,onemustmaintainthedefectratebelow3.4per
millionopportunities.But,nosuchstatisticalrecordsarerequiredinISO9001:2008.ThisisbecauseISO9001:2008

MyexperienceinEuropeisthatcompaniestendtotheISO9001certification.
Mostnationalgobermentsrequireittograntcontracts,andthepublicsectorisquitebulkytoimposehisnorm.It
isalsoaselffeedingbusiness,inthesensethattheISO9001referenceauditorarenormallypubliccompanies.
Thereasonwhywehaveselected6sixisbecauseitfitsbetterourcompany:Despites6sigmaisrecommended
forbigcompanies.Thesizeofourcompanyissmallbutourbusinessmodelisbasedintherepetitionofthe
sameprocess.Wedecidedtoinvestthemoneyonimprovingthatprocessinsteadofexpendingmoneyinallthe
otherformalaspect,necessaryonlyforbeingcomplianceagainstISO9001.Whichoverkillcompanieslikeus
andcostalot!
OurtraumaticexperienceforthepastisthatdespitesbeingISO9001certified,ourprocessesdidnotimprove
andourpersonneldidnotreallycommitonthecontinuousimprovementconceptbeyondachievingthe
