As a Marine Corps veteran, I would like to point out that theres more to
military prowess than firepower. Theres no statistic for leadership, no
metric for the stuff they pump into you at Parris Island.
But firepower matters ... a lot.
In a world rife with global conflicts, the ability to project power and wield
that power decisively is an important national security and diplomatic asset.
Wikimedia Commons
The folks at Global Firepower have figured out a way to rank who has the
most powerful military.
They measure 40 different stats about a country, including number of
aircraft carriers, available manpower, and labor force, to produce a Power
Index, in which lower numbers equal more firepower.
Note: Nuclear capabilities are not included in this calculation but Russia
and the United States far outpace the rest of the world in nuclear armament,
with 8,500 and 7,700 nuclear weapons, respectively.

@Follow the money: Ah, well. If the federal government weren't spying on me
already, it is after that comment.
@Follow the money: Absolutely correct. This is a republican socialism, by which they
take wealth in the form of federal revenue from democrat states and redistribute it to republican states. We
will never solve our defict and debt problems while republican states are addicted to federal spending, all
kinds of federal spending.
What we really need is a study of how much military power a country really needs, compared to how much it
spends on. The US would have an "overbloat" index of several orders of magnitude.
@Illuminator: OK, I laughed so hard at that comment, I think a little bit of pee came
out. What an asinine comment that is. 'Republican Socialism?' My god, Liberals won't accept responsibility
for ANYTHING will they? Don't like it? Blame the Repubs. What a dope you are.

Never forgive, never forget...
It also means China won't be able to project true "blue water" sea power any further than it's own coast,
let alone the Straits of Malacca.
Nothing that the harpoon missiles of the U.S. Fleet can't handle.
H*ll, and w/ all the new Naval UAVs coming on line, this means even more cost-effective patrol boat
sniping; Hellfires are "only" $73k each, while Harpoons are $1.2 MILLION each

@drchicago: China isn't #1 because China lacks any serious force projection ability
(besides nukes, and they don't exactly secure and hold a foreign part of the world for you), and always has.
They have a VERY powerful regional military, but they have basically NO ability to project their force
outside of their immediate sphere of influence.
And that's why Russia and the US are the top 2, because they're the only countries on Earth at the moment
that have global force projection abilities. The US and Russia can show up on anyone's doorstep in force in
under a month. China simply does not have that power and is no where near it. Game: Dudes that can dust
you off on your own soil.
HTH.

@Meh: Who cares abuut France and their nuclear weapons??? They are
historically LOSERS!
@drchicago: Says someone from China. And look, six other Chinese have read
and thumbs upped the comment. And 25 non-Chinese and thumbed it down as ridiculous. :)
@drchicago: China is at number 3 due to the fact that while they have a very large
army.. it is not very advanced for the most part. Most of it's tanks, aircraft, and artillery are 1960's tec. That
will be changing in the next 10 to 20 years as their modernization speeds up. Also while China has the
world's largest navy, it is mostly gun and missile boats with about a dozen frigates and destroyers and a lot
of 1950's era submarines.
@Jason Davidson: The PRC can't even do an amphibious and/or airborne assault on
Taiwan, w/o getting slaughtered.
So what they have opted for, in the case of a war against the Free and Independent Island of Taiwan is a
blockade by missile (IRBM ?), not a head-on assault.
In the scenario of air attacks against Taiwan, the PRC also comes off losing, despite buying/making/stealing
advanced Russian technology. They have to travel 200 miles, plenty of advance warning for the good guys.
And this is even w/o the assistance of a US carrier battlegroup.
@drchicago: Military strength isn't just about numbers. Long gone are the days
when a large standing army equated to power. Nowindays it's about the ability how easily you can project
your military influence as well as many other factors. We're number 1 on this list mostly because we have
more global military bases than any other nation. Which means we could strike anywhere in the world very
quickly. Besides, China may have a larger standing army, but they like to fight by sending in massive waves
of soldiers which leads to massive casualties. They need more soldiers to make up for their wasteful fighting
style.

IN 10 years it will have 3 aircraft carrier groups. Its not for Pakistan and China as they can be approached by
land. Its for taking over California and New Jersey. (China wants Canada).

India's Navy buildup is good for SouthEast Asia stability and peace. I hope the acquire five aircraft carriers.
@Bubba Shawn: That is a huge land border and even Indian soldiers cross into
Chinese territory and campout. Its like saying US is weak because illegal aliens crossover with impunity.
@Bubba Shawn: Indian Military is not allowing anyone... political will to solve the
Chinese problem does not exist..thats the whole problem..the place where they had setup the camps is part
of disputed territory ... so its a no man's land... sometimes they come just to exert some pressure.. Indians
too do it at other places ...

@Dave F: You forget that Israel was the back of the US being it. Without it Israel
would have been overrunned along time ago.
@Dave F: You seem to be forgetting the fact that during golf war I the French had
to be called back because they almost already were in Bagdad on their way to bust Saddam Hussein while
the Americans and Brits were still in the desert. Busting Saddam was not part of the plan.
And the French never felt the need to bomb the sh*t out of countries such as a certain world power does all
the time.
And on what is your assumption based? On the fact that the French surrendered to the Germans in WWII?
The Germans would have walked straight over the UK and the US if these countries would have been directly
adjacent to France. It took millions of Russians lives to stop the Nazis in the end.

@Joe A: The U.S prefers the French army over any other nation due to how they
protect there soliders in combat.

@martellus: India has fought wars every 15 years, and come out on tops.....against
Pakistan about 14 years ago, they drove out the pak army from mountain tops, in 1971, they almost overran
Karachi but pulled back to the border lines due to their defence doctrine. So get your facts straight buddy,
the Indian army is a force to reckon with!
@martellus: You do not know about India's secret weapon? It is round like a flying
saucer with a hole in it. NYC cops cannot resist it. Its a tricky one and comes in chocolate and cinnamon
flavors, totally stealthy, it can travel through air land or even in water/coffeee. Guess what is it?
@martellus: Why do you even fucking comment, when you don't know shit?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_and_Analysis_Wing
@martellus: NYPD can't defit India. They are defeated and India occupied America
and here to stay until last American becomes a tree trimmer
@martellus: The war against Ethiopia (pls learn to spell a country's name properly)
was part of colonial shell game, in which the French and British played out their parts very well. It was a
dirty war and not something anyone should be proud of -- but at least a couple of million slaves where freed
and Ethiopia's expansionist policies against its neighbors reigned it, at least for a while.
French have nuclear bombs ready to be launched from their ground, planes and submarines. Italian, Greek,
Spanish and German have bullets. No debate.
Defense budgets:
USA: $689,591,000,000
China: $129,272,000,000
Russia: $64,000,000,000
Number of soldiers means nothing. The days of trench warfare are over. Military might in today's world is all
about tech drones and cruise missiles.

of the world
@Mattnyc1980: You forgot that US army suppliers don't bother with keeping their
blueprints secure. China can snatch away tens of billions worth of research per year by employing about 10
university graduates. Your technological advantage is eroding by the minute. While I am typing this, China is
probably laughing because the Pentagon didn't change the default password on its drones. Next week
Lockheed Martin decides to delay encrypting the intranet, probably because the manager needs to cut costs
for a bonus.
19
@Mattnyc1980: That's true, and remember budgets in China and India are based on
lower salaries, so China budget would rise 3x when salaries are same PPP equivalent.
I stole the blueprints to a car yesterday. Can you help me build a V12 Lambo eng? Doubt it.

If Nuclear Armaments are not counted, how the hell is Russia ahead of China on the
numbers you're display? When you show numbers, you'd better provide rationale when [ALL] numbers favour
a lower-ranked over a higher if you want to pretend you're not being political.
duh, we invaded and stole from Mexico way b4 and alot more and I am not Mexican or
Hispanic at all, I am a white caucasian american of German-Scandinavian (Father) and English-Scotch-Irish
blood/heritage (Mother) all on original and official government paperwork and parents birth certificate and my
parents are 1st generation Americans but speak those languages and my grandparents still have their accents
(all 4 of them), "just in case", but I like to say the truth and history the way it was and still is, but Yes- America

budget on the Military, 25% if your talking about total security/military spending. Your argument might be
valid if you tried to use facts.

Not every country sees the world as their backyard. Even with global projection
capabilities, you still need to look at where you land. There are quite some countries on this planet that neither
US or Russia will want to land into.
I know by and large that their military is outdated, but North Korea at 29th? Ditto
regarding South Korea. I'm not believing their claim as far as numbers go. Just in manpower alone, ROK
should be #2 w/ 1,200,000+ in uniform.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/armies.htm
China has people with guns but lacks the firepower to defeat the stronger armies/navies
at battle anywhere except on their home turf, where they are also vulnerable. They also lack the means to
deploy soldiers quickly and en mass around the world. For that the US is king, by a longshot. We can get the
people there with the firepower far faster than anyone else.
Was expecting to see North Korea in the top ten with their million-man armed forces
and continuous saber-rattling by Kim Jong Un and his predecessors. Could reporter Brian Jones offer up where
@David Winland : Disregard comment posted above. Surprised to see North Korea
ranked #29.
