Globe i250
Pre-Installation Guide

STEP 1:
The Globe i250 FleetBroadband antenna requires an unobstructed view of the sky from horizon to horizon and should not be
mounted near any large obstructions. Additionally the antenna must be mounted as far away as possible from the ships radar and
other RF sources.
1.
2.
The Globe i250 antenna should have a 360 unobstructed view of the sky from horizon to horizon and should not be
mounted near any large
obstruction such as::
o
Ships funnel
Mast
Wheel house
Below are the minimum acceptable separation between a radar and the Globe i250
FleetBroadband antenna:

X-Band radar - 4 m
S-Band radar - 2 m

STEP 2:
The placement of the Globe i250 FleetBroadband antenna requires a rigid structural connection to the hull or structure of the ship.
Places on the ship with heavy resonant vibrations are not suitable for the antenna pedestal.
The Globe i250 antenna can be mounted on an antenna mast as long as it is vibration free
Globe Wireless provides a mounting kit designed to mount the Globe i250 antenna to a handrail (Use as last resort)
The antenna mounting mast must be designed to support the Globe i250 FleetBroadband antenna and the following characteristics:
Weight = 3.8 kg
The pedestal must have an internal hole for the installation of the antenna cable
The flange (top plate) must meet the specifications illustrated on pages 8, 9 or 10
The pedestal must be able to withstand onboard vibrations and wind forces up to 108 knots, even in icing conditions
Below are some examples of mounting masts which can be prepared for securing and installing the Globe i250 FleetBroadband
antenna. Additionally, pages 8, 9 and 10 are example illustrations on fabricating a mounting pole and/or mast.

STEP 3:
The location should be a well ventilated room - terminals are generally placed in the radio room or bridge
The Globe i250 antenna cable is 50m in length and must reach from the antenna to the terminal location
STEP 4:
Observe shipboard fireproofing regulations and watertight requirements for all deck and bulkhead penetrations
Use existing, unused thru-deck glands if sufficient space is available or install a new one properly with type-approved
materials
o
Ensure there are no kinks or excessive loops in order to avoid cable failures, premature wear or RFI
Ensure that there is enough cable on each end for service and drip loops
Avoid crossing over other existing cables if possible - If another cable must be crossed, cross the cables perpendicular to
each other to minimize the possibility of cable induction
The supplied cable glands provided are for bulkhead penetrations only! - If deck penetrations are required, ship owners
must provide installation type approved kick pipes or proper size gooseneck

3.
Choose a location with a clean view of the required area but at least 2m from any mobile equipment
Mounting the GSM antenna in a stairwell will normally allow for maximum coverage
The GSM antenna should give a 30m x 30m coverage (however thickness of the deck, cluttering and internal walls will
affect the coverage)

Run the GlobeMobile - Cat-5 PoE GSM antenna cable from the Globe i250 terminal to the GlobeMobile GSM antenna
location (Use the Cable Installation/Run Guidelines in Step 3 for installing and running the Cat-5 PoE GSM antenna cable).
2.
Globe Wireless recommends leaving unused antenna cable coiled up where the GlobeMobile GSM antenna will be located
allowing for adjustments to the antenna position to maximize GSM coverage.
