Globe i250
Pre-Installation Guide

What is the Pre-Installation Process?

The Pre-Installation process is intended to be performed by the ships crew to help prepare for the actual Globe i250 system
installation. Ships that complete the Pre-Installation will be given priority for installing the new system.
Correctly selecting a location for the FleetBroadband 250 and GlobeMobile GSM system antennas is the most important step.
Globe Wireless engineering would very much like to offer assistance with antenna location. Please email any antenna layout plans,
photos and drawings that you have to us, and we can suggest the best location. Globe Wireless will require top-view and side-view
drawings identifying all components on the antenna deck. The drawings must be dimensionally correct (drawn to scale). Please
ensure that all drawings have some type of indication allowing us to determine distance (a 4 meter safety zone circle around the
magnetic compass is sufficient). Email antenna plans to : customersupport@globewireless.com.
Additionally, please include the Customer Case Number that is included with your paperwork.
The Pre-Installation process will be carried out in several steps:
Step 1: Determine a suitable location for the FleetBroadband 250 antenna
Step 2: Determine the type and install the antenna mounting mast
Step 3: Determine a suitable location for the Globe i250 terminal
Step 4: Install/Run the FleetBroadband 250 antenna cable
Step 5: Determine a suitable location for the GlobeMobile GSM antenna
Step 6: Install/Run the GlobeMobile GSM antenna cable
Step 7: Notify Globe Wireless that the Pre-Installation is complete

STEP 1:

Determine a Suitable Location for the Globe i250 Antenna &

Mounting Mast

The Globe i250 FleetBroadband antenna requires an unobstructed view of the sky from horizon to horizon and should not be
mounted near any large obstructions. Additionally the antenna must be mounted as far away as possible from the ships radar and
other RF sources.
1.

Choose a location based on limited obstruction interference.

2.

The Globe i250 antenna should have a 360 unobstructed view of the sky from horizon to horizon and should not be
mounted near any large
obstruction such as::
o

Ships funnel

Mast

Wheel house

Any obstruction can cause signal degradation. The amount of

degradation depends on the size of the obstruction and the distance
from the antenna. The table gives a guideline for obstruction sizes
that will cause limited degradation.

Choose a location based on proximity to radars, other RF antenna sources

and other ship equipment.

The antenna must be mounted as far away as possible from transmitting

antennas:
o

>5m apart from another FleetBroadband antenna

10 m away from any other transmitting antenna

1 m away from the ships magnetic compass

Below are the minimum acceptable separation between a radar and the Globe i250
FleetBroadband antenna:

Page | 3

X-Band radar - 4 m

S-Band radar - 2 m

The antenna should be 20 above or 20 below any radar source

Good Antenna Location Placement

Page | 4

Examples of Bad Antenna Location Placement

The following examples of railing locations and antenna heights are not acceptable as the sky view is very much restricted due to
obstructions. These antenna locations will give a very small and limited view of the sky for tracking satellites.

STEP 2:

Determine the Antenna Mounting Mast Type and install the

Globe i250 FleetBroadband Antenna

The placement of the Globe i250 FleetBroadband antenna requires a rigid structural connection to the hull or structure of the ship.
Places on the ship with heavy resonant vibrations are not suitable for the antenna pedestal.

The Globe i250 antenna can be mounted on an antenna mast as long as it is vibration free

Globe Wireless provides a mounting kit designed to mount the Globe i250 antenna to a handrail (Use as last resort)

The antenna mounting mast must be designed to support the Globe i250 FleetBroadband antenna and the following characteristics:

Weight = 3.8 kg

Dimension 31.95 cm (W) x 27.7 cm (H)

The pedestal must have an internal hole for the installation of the antenna cable

The flange (top plate) must meet the specifications illustrated on pages 8, 9 or 10

The pedestal must be able to withstand onboard vibrations and wind forces up to 108 knots, even in icing conditions

Below are some examples of mounting masts which can be prepared for securing and installing the Globe i250 FleetBroadband
antenna. Additionally, pages 8, 9 and 10 are example illustrations on fabricating a mounting pole and/or mast.

STEP 3:

Determine a Suitable Location for the Globe i250 Terminal

Select a location for the Globe i250 Terminal:

The location should be a well ventilated room - terminals are generally placed in the radio room or bridge

The Globe i250 antenna cable is 50m in length and must reach from the antenna to the terminal location

The dimensions of the Globe i250 terminal are as follows:

Height - 8.89 cm (3.5 in)

Width - 48.26 cm (19 in)

Depth - 35.56 cm (14 in)

The Globe i250 has an AC Power Input 100-240

VAC power supply requires one power outlet. Globe
Wireless recommends the use of an Uninterruptable
Por Supply (UPS).

STEP 4:

Installing/Running the Globe i250 Antenna Cable

Cable Installation/Run Guidelines

The following recommendations represent general guidelines for installing/running the Globe i250 antenna cable. Each ship
presents unique problems and a certain degree of improvisation may be required.

Observe shipboard fireproofing regulations and watertight requirements for all deck and bulkhead penetrations

Use existing, unused thru-deck glands if sufficient space is available or install a new one properly with type-approved
materials
o

Do not use existing glands that have cables in them

Never run parallel (or along side) existing cables

Ensure there are no kinks or excessive loops in order to avoid cable failures, premature wear or RFI

Ensure that there is enough cable on each end for service and drip loops

Avoid crossing over other existing cables if possible - If another cable must be crossed, cross the cables perpendicular to
each other to minimize the possibility of cable induction

The supplied cable glands provided are for bulkhead penetrations only! - If deck penetrations are required, ship owners
must provide installation type approved kick pipes or proper size gooseneck

Installing/Running the Antenna Cable

1.

Pull from topside to below.

Ensure the terminated end with the N-Type Connector

remains topside - The N-type connector can be damaged
and should not be used to pull
the antenna cable.

Start from the antenna location and pull the unterminated

end
of the LMR400 cable to the Globe i250 terminal location.

2.

Leave extra cable at the antenna location - Leave 1m plus the

height of the mounting mast

3.

Ensure the N-type connector is protected from water and moisture

- Use plastic bag, electrical tape, etc, to ensure it is kept clean and dry.

STEP 5: Determine a Suitable Location for the GlobeMobile GSM Antenna

Select a location for the GSM antenna using the following general guidelines:

Metal bulkheads can impede the GSM signal

Choose a location with a clean view of the required area but at least 2m from any mobile equipment

Mounting the GSM antenna in a stairwell will normally allow for maximum coverage

The GSM antenna should give a 30m x 30m coverage (however thickness of the deck, cluttering and internal walls will
affect the coverage)

Page | 12

STEP 6: Installing/Running the GlobeMobile GSM Antenna Cable

1.

Run the GlobeMobile - Cat-5 PoE GSM antenna cable from the Globe i250 terminal to the GlobeMobile GSM antenna
location (Use the Cable Installation/Run Guidelines in Step 3 for installing and running the Cat-5 PoE GSM antenna cable).

2.

Globe Wireless recommends leaving unused antenna cable coiled up where the GlobeMobile GSM antenna will be located
allowing for adjustments to the antenna position to maximize GSM coverage.

STEP 7: Notify Globe Wireless that the Pre-Installation is Complete

Email InstCent@globewireless.com and your Superintendent that the pre-installation process is complete so that they can schedule
the satellite installation with Globe Wireless.
