Explain expectations about own work role as expressed in relevant
standards

I would be working with the risk assessment and care plans of the
service user at all times. I would work within duty care e.g. infection
control. I would respect the service users wishes and preferences. I
would also protect the rights and promote the interests and
independence of the service users. I would respect dignity,
privacy, culture and religion of service users. I would maintenance the
trust and confidence of the service user by keeping confidential
information accept the one that will pose danger to them. Health and
safety legislation such as the Health and safety at Work Act, Food Safety
Act, COSSH, RIDDOR and so on influencethe way my role is carried out
as a support worker. The understanding of the health and safety
regulations and putting it into practice make it possible for me to ensure
that service users I am supporting are safe and free from harm. The
confidentiality laws like the Data protection Act, Freedom of Information
Act influence my role in dealing with confidential information about the
service users. I would encourage service user to take medication e.g. if
they refuse medication as they have the right to refuse. I would prompt
service user to clean the environment and also clean up after using
things in the house such as to clean cooker after cooking, to wash hand
after cleaning up and I myself would wear gloves when giving personal
care. This would protect me from picking up infections. I will make sure
that I get consent from the service user and plan activity with consent
with from service user with yes or no choice. I would support service

user to write letter to social worker if they are not happy with care plan or
support with organisation complaints procedure as it is their right.

Assessment Criteria 2.1

Explain the importance of reflective practice in continuously
improving the quality of service provided
Reflective practice is imperative in order to ensure that high standards
are kept continuously as circumstances, children and environments
change. In order to reflect one must continuously be aware of
approaches used and how they can be changed or developed to
improve. Continually improving and adapting approaches benefits both
children and practitioner, ensuring that each individuals need are created
for. Reflective practice involves evolving in a person centred approach.
The carer benefits as his/her skills grown and develop, enabling the
highest standards of care and provision. It also promotes a better level
of understanding and acceptance of those different from us taking on
board the opinions, cultures and attitudes of other to ensure a diverse
and positively productive daily experience that enabled higher level of
understanding from all. It also fosters personal and team development
because a reflective practice evolves our experience thus enabling
higher standard of learning experience. Experience can only be
beneficial when it is either positive experience (good practice) or a
negative experience that is reflective upon and consequently changed
and improved. Carers that deem experience alone as a credential to
good practice are not developing, learning and reaching their fullest
potential. Instead they are stuck in practices and habits that they may
be over used, bad practice or practice that has not reached its fullest
potential.

Assessment Criteria 2.3

Describe how own values, believes systems and experience may
effect working practice

All service user have their own beliefs and cultures and I would treat
each service user individually and respect their beliefs, I would respect
their values and beliefs if they were religious and wanted to go to church
3

every Sunday or if they were Muslim to a mosque. I would make

enquiries to make sure that I was able to take them so they could attend.
As a support worker I would treat, respect and support the service users
right and choice.
In some religion they
Dont eat certain meats I would ensure that, they was respected. Also
even if I was a vegetarian I would respect and treat a non-vegetarian
service user in exactly the same way. I would treat each one individually
and not discriminate against them. I would treat them with dignity, care
for them and support them in the way that meets their needs.
Communicate in a way they would understand, if its sign language I
would try and learn Makaton. Some adults have learning difficulties
depending on the handicap usually sign with Makaton which is similar to
normal sign language. I also would have to respect the fact that some
service users I work with could be smokers and I would have to treat
them the exact the same way I would have treat a non-smoker.

Assessment Criteria 3.1

Evaluate own knowledge, performance and understanding against
relevant standard
I believe I am carrying out my job to the CQC standard. I have sufficient
knowledge for the job that I am carrying out. I have covered and
attended regular trainings that are required for me to carry out my job. I
am also attending regular refresher training to keep my understanding
and knowledge regarding relevant standards up to date. I have also
been performing to a very high standard and to the standard required by
CQC. I know this because of the praise that I received on a regular basis
by the service users that I work with and also by my manager.

Assessment Criteria 4.1

Identify sources of support for planning and reviewing own
development
There are many sources of support that you can access and many
different ways that you can help yourself, when developing your practice.
The appraisal or the supervision system in your workplace can be a
4

good starting point. This will help you to identify areas of your practice
that need to be developed and to plan to use opportunities for training
and development. Some employers provide appraisal at six-monthly or
12 monthly intervals, but supervision should be at least once a month.
This gives you a good opportunity to use the experience and knowledge
of your supervisory to help you to plan how to move forward in your
practice. Other sources are manages, mentoring schemes, assessing
specialist through partner and external organisation.

Assessment Criteria 5.1 & 5.2

Evaluate how learning activities have affected practice
There are several ways of learning and only by learning can we affect
how we practice our work in a more improved efficient manner. I believe
we learn more by our mistakes, which from that knowledge; we can then
improve the service. A theory known as Lewin/Kolb cycle puts into
practice a learning activity which should then improve future practice.
The general theory is as follows: 1) concrete experience -where
something happens to you or you do something, even an everyday
event. 2) Reflective observation-where you think about it. 3) Abstract
conceptualisation- you think about how it fits into a pattern or theory and
work out some rules. 4) Active experimentation-the next time the same
situation occurs, you apply your rules/theories. As a result, this will make
your experience different from the first time. This can be applied to
different factors, therefore you continue to reflect, think and work out
different solutions. An example would be working with someone for the
first time who is unable to speak; 1) you offer him a drink which he
doesnt want so pushes it away. 2) You reflect why he didnt want the
drink. 3) You try a different solution, drink and approach. 4) You analyse
the options and alternatives and different ways of presenting or offering
the drink. That cycle is an Activist-Reflector-Pragmatist-Theorist,
formation.
Another learning style could be Honey and Mumfords; four stage styles.
Stage 1: Activists-people who concentrate on experience. Stage 2:
Reflectors- people who like to stand back and think about experience.
Stage 3: Theorists-people who like to concentrate on analysis. Stage 4:
Pragmatists-people who like to try things out.
Other ways to affect our working practice can be from learning off our
5

more experienced colleagues, working and discussing issues as a team

reading text books, journals and articles. All these ways can improve
knowledge and education to all involved.
