About the Author
FOREWORD
by don Miguel Ruiz
Author of The Four Agreements
It is a great pleasure for me to introduce Brandt Morgan and his magical process called the Vision Walk.
When I first met Brandt in 1994, I could see that he was a complex man with many opinions. I am happy to say that he is much simpler now. Finally he gave up trying to be what he thought he should be and let himself be what he was all along: an artist of the spirit. Now he has created a beautiful expression of his big heart—this book that you hold in your hands. In it, Brandt teaches the same thing I have been teaching most of my life. He shows you how to be who you really are and how to live an authentic life.
But he doesn’t do it with words alone. He also does it with the beautiful Vision Walk process, which includes a short meditation that takes you into another realm. The Vision Walk Meditation is simple but very powerful, and it can change your life. In it, you turn off your mind and enter into your heart, then use your inner guidance to find the answer to any question or problem.
Often, when you get your answer, you realize you knew it all along; you just forgot. So in many ways, the Vision Walk is about remembering—remembering the truth of who you are and learning how to live it. Both the book and the process will give you lots of ideas and inspiration about how to live a happier life.
The Vision Walk is a wonderful tool, and it is also very practical. When you look with your heart, you will always see the truth. And when you see the truth, you will naturally take the action that is aligned with your greatest happiness. It is just a matter of uncovering your authenticity.
Most people think becoming authentic takes a long time and is very difficult, but it is not difficult at all. Just like life, it is very simple. Your true self is not something you need to develop or improve. It is already within you, always waiting for you, just beyond the noise in your mind. All you have to do is remember it and go there. With the Vision Walk, you can go there in just a few minutes. So by all means, as you absorb the lessons here, don’t just read the book, do the Vision Walk. Formulate a pressing question and let Brandt’s soothing words relax and guide you to the wisdom of your own heart. You have a lot to gain if you do, sometimes even magic and miracles.
Many years ago, I asked Brandt to lead Vision Walks at my annual Easter gatherings, and I saw hundreds of people reunite with their true selves and get answers to their most important questions in less than half an hour. In the years since then, I am happy to say that thousands more have used the Vision Walk to discover their authenticity, find their voice, and embody their own unique wisdom.
In the beginning I told Brandt, I will teach you my way, but you have to do it your way.
For a long time now, Brandt has been teaching and writing in his own way. Whatever he shares comes straight from the heart. As you will see, he communicates clearly and gracefully, with the wisdom of a master.
I know you will enjoy and benefit from the Vision Walk, and I hope you will use it often. It will help you to know yourself. It will help you to be happy. The Vision Walk is a way to enter into the magic of creation and practice living an authentic life every day.
As Brandt says, you don’t need a guru to get there. It is all inside you already. So why not go there? And why not share it? After all, just being who you truly are is the greatest gift you can give to the world.
All my love,
don Miguel Angel Ruiz
PREFACE
How It All Began
The Vision Walk came to me one afternoon on a dusty ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico.
It was all so simple. I was teaching a class in Toltec wisdom, much as it had been passed on to me by my own teacher, don Miguel Ruiz. Essentially, the Toltec path has to do with dropping the busy mind with all its judgments and expectations and social conditioning in order to expose the truth of who we really are. That truth is hidden in the heart, but after two hours I sensed that most of my students were still up in their heads.
What I was teaching seemed to be just mental concepts for them. I needed to do something different, but what?
A Message from My Inner Voice
Send them on a vision quest,
said my inner voice.
I was astounded. Hardly ever does my inner voice speak so forcefully, yet the words were as clear as day.
Surprisingly, I was put off by the suggestion. You can’t do that,
I protested, remembering my own experiences with the Native American vision quest. That’s four days and four nights of fasting and praying in a ten-foot circle!
Don’t argue, just do it!
the voice insisted.
"OK, do what?" I asked.
In a flash, I had it all, just like downloading a computer program. I would ask my students to meditate for ten minutes on a question of supreme importance, then send them out to walk in nature for twenty minutes. I would instruct them to turn off their minds, glide over the landscape as though in a dream, follow the urges of their hearts, and stay open to whatever might catch their attention.
Simple Questions, Life-Changing Answers
And that is exactly what they did. When they came back from their walks, every one of those seventeen students had received their answers. In fact, many of them had had life-changing experiences.
One woman, feeling blocked and depressed, felt drawn into the ranch meeting hall, where her heart told her to sit down and play the piano. As she played, the notes reawakened her passion for life. She returned with a smile of liberation on her face, free of depression for the first time in months.
A man filled with anger and grief over his wife leaving him two years before asked how he could let go of the relationship. His heart urged him
