Mini-lesson 1: Learning about Plagiarism (1 day)

Guiding Question: Do you participate in plagiarism?

Principles of Inquiry-Based Learning:

Authentic - With resources available on the internet and so easy to retrieve,
plagiarism is becoming a big problem. For the rest of their lives, the students
will be researching information and using resources in their classwork and
even when they get a job. Students need to learn when you use information
from books, magazines, and the internet, they need to cite their work.
Deep Understanding - Through the use of technology, the students will gain a
deeper understanding of plagairism because they will be able to learn about
different examples of plagairism through videos. They will, also, be able to
learn about some of the consequences of plagairism through videos.
Performances of Understanding - N/A
Assessment - The students will be informally assessed orally.
Appropriate Use of Technology - N/A
Connection with Experts - N/A
Student Success - Student success will be measured by orally explaining why
my paragraph is a form of plagairism.
Ethical/Citizenship - Students will learn about using technology responsibly
and ethically as they research and use resources on the internet. For this
unit, we will focus on plagiarism.

Engage, Enhance and Extend:

Engage: The students will be engage because we will be using Survey
Monkey and Microsoft Word.
Enhance: Watching the videos on plagairism, the students will have a better
understanding of plagairism by seeing and hearing the different examples
and consequences.
Extend: None for this lesson.

Objectives: Students will learn the definition of plagiarism.

Procedure:
To begin the lesson, ask the students if they participate in plagiarism. The
students will answer by using a survey with Survey Monkey- yes, no, or I'm
not sure.
Ask the students to give me one fact about butterflies that they have
learned. I will type the facts using the word processor "Microsoft Word." I will
type a paragraph using the facts and putting my name on the work. Ask the
students if they see anything wrong with this. Type responses under the
paragraph.
Tell the students we will be learning about plagiarism and what it means.
The students will watch the videos on plagiarism using the web address for
the curated resources at "Bag the Web." The address is written on the
board. As the students are watching the videos, they will pause the video
and type a question they have or a fact that is interesting or needs to be
clarified on their tablets.
Ask if there were any questions that needs to be answered or clarified or
share an interesting fact. Show the students the paragraph again and ask "Is
there anything wrong with this paragraph and why?"
Conclude the leasson by showing the Guiding Question again: "Do you
participate in plagiarism?"
Assessment: The assessment will be an informal oral assessment and
will be the answer to the question above "Is there anything wrong with this
paragraph and why?" The students' will write yes or no on their answer
boards and then I will ask them to show me their answer and then ask why
they chose that answer.
